بَابُ مَا يَصْنَعُ مَنْ أَرَادَ الْإِحْرَامَ مِنَ الْغُسْلِ وَالطِّيبِ
Chapter: What One Who Intends Ihram Should Do Regarding Bathing and Perfume
Hadith 4156
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يُحْرِمَ غَسَلَ رَأْسَهُ بِخَطْمِيٍّ وَأُشْنَانٍ وَدَهَنَهُ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ زَيْتٍ غَيْرِ كَثِيرٍ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to enter into Ihram, he would wash his head with khatmi herb and ushnan grass, and he would also apply some olive oil to his head.
Hadith 4157
وَعَنْهَا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: طَيَّبْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِيَدَيَّ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ: بِيَدَيَّ هَاتَيْنِ) بِذَرِيرَةٍ لِحَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ لِلْحِلِّ وَالْإِحْرَامِ حِينَ أَحْرَمَ وَحِينَ رَمَى جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَطُوفَ بِالْبَيْتِ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ: قَبْلَ أَنْ يُفِيضَ)
Narrated by Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: On the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage, I applied perfume made from various substances to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with my own hands at the time of putting on the Ihram and at the time of taking it off. That is, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to put on the Ihram, I applied perfume, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) stoned the Jamrah al-Aqabah before performing the Tawaf al-Ifadah on the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah, I applied perfume at that time.
Hadith 4158
عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَاهُ يَقُولُ: سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا بِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ طَيَّبْتِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَتْ: بِأَطْيَبِ الطِّيبِ
Urwah says: I asked Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): Which fragrance did you apply to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? She said: The finest fragrance (i.e., musk).
Hadith 4159
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى وَبِيصِ الْمِسْكِ فِي رَأْسِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ مُحْرِمٌ
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: It is as if I can still see the shine of musk on the head of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while he would be in the state of Ihram.
Hadith 4160
(وَعَنْهَا مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَتْ: كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى وَبِيصِ الطِّيبِ فِي مَفْرِقِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ: فِي مَفَارِقِهِ) وَهُوَ يُلَبِّي
(Second chain) Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: It is as if I can still see the shine of fragrance in the parting of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was reciting the Talbiyah.
Hadith 4161
وَعَنْهَا أَيْضًا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهُنَّ كُنَّ يَخْرُجْنَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِنَّ الضِّمَادُ، قَدْ أَضْمَدْنَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُحْرِمْنَ ثُمَّ يَغْتَسِلْنَ، وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِنَّ، يَعْرَقْنَ وَيَغْتَسِلْنَ لَا يَنْهَاهُنَّ عَنْهُ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Hajj and Umrah in his company, they would have fragrance applied to them. They would apply perfume before entering into Ihram, then they would bathe and the fragrance would still remain on them. They would perspire and then bathe again, and the fragrance would still be there. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not forbid them from this.
Hadith 4162
عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَجَدَ رِيحَ طِيبٍ بِذِي الْحُلَيْفَةِ، فَقَالَ: مِمَّنْ هَذِهِ الرِّيحُ؟ فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ: مِنِّي يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ! فَقَالَ: مِنْكَ لَعَمْرِي، فَقَالَ: طَيَّبَتْنِي أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ، وَزَعَمَتْ أَنَّهَا طَيَّبَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عِنْدَ إِحْرَامِهِ، فَقَالَ: اذْهَبْ فَأَقْسِمْ عَلَيْهَا لَمَا غَسَلَتْهُ فَرَجَعَ إِلَيْهَا فَغَسَلَتْهُ
Sulaiman bin Yasar says: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) perceived the scent of perfume at Dhul-Hulaifah and asked: From whom is this fragrance coming? Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Commander of the Faithful! From me. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By my life! It is coming from you. He said: Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) applied this perfume to me, and she believes that she also applied perfume to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of donning Ihram. But Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Go and make her swear that she must wash it off in any case. Then he went to the lady and she washed it off.
Hadith 4163
عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْتَشِرِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَتَطَيَّبُ عِنْدَ إِحْرَامِهِ؟ فَقَالَ: لَأَنْ أَطَّلِيَ بِقَطِرَانٍ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَفْعَلَهُ، قَالَ: فَسَأَلَ أَبِي عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَأَخْبَرَهَا بِقَوْلِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا فَقَالَتْ: يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، كُنْتُ أُطَيِّبُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ يَطُوفُ عَلَى نِسَائِهِ ثُمَّ يُصْبِحُ مُحْرِمًا يَنْتَضِحُ طِيبًا
Muhammad bin Muntashir asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about applying perfume at the time of Ihram. He said: If I were to apply sulphur, that would be more preferable to me than applying perfume. Then he asked this issue to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and also told her what Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had said. So she said: May Allah have mercy on Abu Abdur Rahman. I myself used to apply perfume to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then he would go to his wives, and when he would enter into Ihram in the morning, the fragrance of perfume would be emanating from him.
