Eighth Section: What Has Been Reported That It Is the Twenty-Seventh Night and Mention of Its Signs
Hadith 4042
عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: تَذَاكَرَ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ، فَقَالَ أُبَيٌّ: أَنَا وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ! أَعْلَمُ أَيَّ لَيْلَةٍ هِيَ، هِيَ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي أَخْبَرَنَا بِهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْلَةُ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ تَمْضِي مِنْ رَمَضَانَ وَآيَةُ ذَلِكَ أَنَّ الشَّمْسَ تُصْبِحُ الْغَدَ مِنْ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةِ تَرَقْرَقُ، لَيْسَ لَهَا شُعَاعٌ، فَزَعَمَ سَلَمَةُ بْنُ كُهَيْلٍ أَنَّ زِرًّا أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ رَصَدَهَا ثَلَاثَ سِنِينَ مِنْ أَوَّلِ يَوْمٍ يَدْخُلُ رَمَضَانُ إِلَى آخِرِهِ، فَرَآهَا تَطْلُعُ صَبِيحَةَ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ، تَرَقْرَقُ لَيْسَ لَهَا شُعَاعٌ (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: بَيْضَاءَ تَرَقْرَقُ)
Zar bin Hubaysh narrates that Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the companions discussed among themselves about the Night of Qadr. Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By the True Lord! I know which night it is. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us about it. It is the night of the twenty-seventh of the month of Ramadan. Its sign is that on its morning, when the sun rises, it has no rays. Salamah bin Kuhayl says that Zar informed him that he observed the sunrise throughout the entire month of Ramadan for three consecutive years and saw that indeed, on the morning of the twenty-seventh, when the sun rises and ascends, it has no rays, and its color is white.
Hadith 4043
عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قُمْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْلَةَ ثَلَاثٍ وَعِشْرِينَ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ إِلَى ثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ قَالَ: ((لَا أَحْسَبُ مَا تَطْلُبُونَ إِلَّا وَرَاءَكُمْ))، ثُمَّ قُمْنَا مَعَهُ لَيْلَةَ خَمْسٍ وَعِشْرِينَ إِلَى نِصْفِ اللَّيْلِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ((لَا أَحْسَبُ مَا تَطْلُبُونَ إِلَّا وَرَاءَكُمْ))، فَقُمْنَا مَعَهُ لَيْلَةَ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ حَتَّى أَصْبَحَ وَسَكَتَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: On the twenty-third night of Ramadan, we stood in prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until the first third of the night, but then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I think that what you are seeking will come later. Then we stood with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the twenty-fifth night until half the night, but then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I think that the night you are searching for will be after this. So we stood with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the twenty-seventh night until morning, after which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent.
Hadith 4044
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ حَدَّثَنِي عَاصِمٌ عَنْ زِرٍّ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأُبَيٍّ: أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ فَإِنَّ ابْنَ أُمِّ عَبْدٍ كَانَ يَقُولُ: مَنْ يَقُمِ الْحَوْلَ يُصِبْهَا، قَالَ: يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، قَدْ عَلِمَ أَنَّهَا فِي رَمَضَانَ، فَإِنَّهَا لِسَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ وَلَكِنَّهُ عَمَّى عَلَى النَّاسِ لِكَيْ لَا يَتَّكِلُوا، فَوَاللَّهِ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ الْكِتَابَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّهَا فِي رَمَضَانَ لَيْلَةُ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ! وَأَنَّى عَلِمْتَهَا؟ قَالَ: بِالْآيَةِ الَّتِي أَنْبَأَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَعَدَدْنَا وَحَفِظْنَا فَوَاللَّهِ إِنَّهَا لَهِيَ مَا يُسْتَثْنِي، قُلْتُ لِزِرٍّ: مَا الْآيَةُ؟ قَالَ: إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ غَدَاةَ إِذًا كَأَنَّهَا طَسْتٌ، لَيْسَ لَهَا شُعَاعٌ (زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ: حَتَّى تَرْتَفِعَ)
Zirr says: I said to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him): Tell me about the Night of Qadr. Umm Abd's son, that is, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), says that whoever stands (in prayer) throughout the year will surely find that night. Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: May Allah have mercy on Abu Abdur Rahman, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he knows very well that this night is in the month of Ramadan and it is the twenty-seventh night. In fact, he concealed the determination of this night from the people so that they would not suffice with it (and abandon standing in prayer on the other nights). By Allah, Who sent down the Book upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), this night is the twenty-seventh night of Ramadan. I said to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him): O Abu Mundhir! How did you come to know this? He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told us a sign, then we counted it and remembered it well. By Allah, it is this very night. Zirr said: Sayyiduna Ubayy did not make any exception (he did not even say "insha'Allah"). I (Asim) said to Zirr: What is that sign? He said: It is that on the morning following the Night of Qadr, the sun appears like a flat dish, it has no rays, until it rises high.
Hadith 4045
عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ زِرَّ بْنَ حُبَيْشٍ يَقُولُ: لَوْلَا سُفَهَاؤُكُمْ، لَوَضَعْتُ يَدَيَّ فِي أَذُنَيَّ ثُمَّ نَادَيْتُ: أَلَا إِنَّ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي رَمَضَانَ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فِي السَّبْعِ الْأَوَاخِرِ، قَبْلَهَا ثَلَاثٌ وَبَعْدَهَا ثَلَاثٌ، نَبَّأَنِي مَنْ لَمْ يَكْذِبْنِي عَنْ نَبَإِ مَنْ لَمْ يَكْذِبْهُ، قُلْتُ لِأَبِي يُوسُفَ: يَعْنِي أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَ: كَذَا هُوَ عِنْدِي
Zar bin Hubaysh said: If it were not for these foolish people, I would put my finger in my ear and loudly announce that Laylat al-Qadr occurs after the first three nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan and before the last three nights. This was told to me by a person who cannot lie to me, and it was narrated to him by a being who also cannot speak falsely. I asked Abu Yusuf: Do they mean Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes, that is the case.
Hadith 4046
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: مَتَى لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ؟ قَالَ: ((مَنْ يَذْكُرُ مِنْكُمْ لَيْلَةَ الصَّحْبَاوَاتِ؟)) قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ: أَنَا بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي، وَإِنَّ فِي يَدِي لَتَمَرَاتٍ أَتَسَحَّرُ بِهِنَّ، مُسْتَتِرًا بِمُؤَخَّرَةِ رَحْلِي مِنَ الْفَجْرِ وَذَلِكَ حِينَ طَلَعَ الْقَمَرُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: When is the Night of Qadr? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Does anyone among you remember which night was the one with the reddish clouds? Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: May my parents be sacrificed for you, I remember, on that night at the time of suhoor I was eating dates in my hand and, out of fear of the dawn, I was hiding behind the saddle, while at that time the moon had already risen.
Hadith 4047
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ! إِنِّي شَيْخٌ عَلِيلٌ، يَشُقُّ عَلَيَّ الْقِيَامُ فَأْمُرْنِي بِلَيْلَةٍ لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ يُوَفِّقُنِي فِيهَا لِلَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ، قَالَ: ((عَلَيْكَ بِالسَّابِعَةِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I am an old and sick man, it is difficult for me to stand (in prayer), so please specify one night for me, perhaps Allah Almighty will bless me with the fortune of Laylat al-Qadr in it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Make special arrangements for the seventh, that is, the twenty-seventh night.
Hadith 4048
عَنْ أَبِي عَقْرَبٍ، قَالَ: غَدَوْتُ إِلَى ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ذَاتَ غَدَاةٍ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَوَجَدْتُهُ فَوْقَ بَيْتِهِ جَالِسًا فَسَمِعْنَا صَوْتَهُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: صَدَقَ اللَّهُ وَبَلَّغَ رَسُولُهُ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((إِنَّ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي النِّصْفِ مِنَ السَّبْعِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ تَطْلُعُ الشَّمْسُ غَدَاةَ إِذًا صَافِيَةً لَيْسَ لَهَا شُعَاعٌ))، فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهَا فَوَجَدْتُهَا كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Abu Aqrab says: One day in the month of Ramadan, I went to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in the morning. I saw that he was sitting on the roof of his house. Meanwhile, we heard him saying: Allah has spoken the truth and His Messenger has conveyed it. Then he narrated this hadith that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, the Night of Qadr is in the last seven nights of Ramadan, in the middle of them. On its morning, when the sun rises, it is completely clear and has no rays. I have just looked at it and found it exactly as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) described.
Hadith 4049
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ: قَرَأْتُ عَلَى أَبِي هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ وَسَمِعْتُهُ سَمَاعًا، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْأَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ: أَخْبَرَنِي، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ، قَالَ: ((مَنْ كَانَ مُتَحَرِّيهَا فَلْيَتَحَرَّهَا فِي لَيْلَةِ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ))، قَالَ: شُعْبَةُ وَذَكَرَ لِي رَجُلٌ ثِقَةٌ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ: إِنَّمَا قَالَ: ((مَنْ كَانَ مُتَحَرِّيهَا فَلْيَتَحَرَّهَا فِي السَّبْعِ الْبَوَاقِي))، قَالَ شُعْبَةُ: فَلَا أَدْرِي قَالَ ذَا أَوْ ذَا، شُعْبَةُ شَكَّ، قَالَ أَبِي: الرَّجُلُ الثِّقَةُ يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْقَطَّانُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said regarding the Night of Qadr: Whoever seeks this night should search for it on the twenty-seventh night. Imam Shu’bah said: A trustworthy man narrated to me that Imam Sufyan used to say that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said in this way: Whoever seeks this night should search for it in the last seven nights. Imam Shu’bah said: Now I do not know whether the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said this sentence or the other; Imam Shu’bah became doubtful. Imam Ahmad said: The trustworthy man refers to Imam Yahya bin Sa’id Qattan.
Hadith 4050
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ: ((إِنَّهَا لَيْلَةُ سَابِعَةٍ أَوْ تَاسِعَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ، إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ عَدَدِ الْحَصَى))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said regarding the Night of Qadr: It occurs on the twenty-seventh or twenty-ninth night; on this night, more angels descend to the earth than the number of pebbles.
