Mawla Ibn Abbas, Hazrat Ikrimah says: I visited Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) at his home and asked him about fasting on the Day of Arafah. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting on the Day of Arafah in the plain of Arafat.

Saeed bin Jubair says: I went to Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) at the place of Arafah, while he was eating pomegranate. He said to me: Come closer and eat, but it seems that you are fasting. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not fast on this day. And on one occasion he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not fast on this day.

Nafi' reports that it was asked from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about the fast of the Day of Arafah. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) did not fast on the Day of Arafah during Hajj.

(Second chain) A man asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about fasting on the Day of Arafah. He said: We set out for Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he did not fast on that day. Then we came with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he also did not fast. Then we came with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he also did not fast on that day. Then we came with Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he also did not fast on that day. Therefore, I also do not fast on that day, but I neither command you to fast nor forbid you from it. If you wish, you may fast, and if you wish, you may not fast.

Upon hearing this, he said: You people are leaders and members of the Ahl al-Bayt, and for this reason, people follow your example. I saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) drank milk on this day after having it brought to him.
