الْفَصْلُ الثَّالِثُ فِيمَنْ قَالَ إِنَّ عَاشُورَاءَ الْيَوْمُ التَّاسِعُ وَمَا جَاءَ فِي صَوْمِ يَوْمٍ قَبْلَهُ أَوْ بَعْدَهُ
Third Section: Those Who Said Ashura Is the Ninth Day and What Has Been Reported Regarding Fasting a Day Before or After It
Hadith 3926
عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ الْأَعْرَجِ قَالَ: أَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَهُوَ مُتَّكِئٌ عِنْدَ زَمْزَمَ فَجَلَسْتُ إِلَيْهِ وَكَانَ نِعْمَ الْجَلِيسُ، فَقُلْتُ: أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ، قَالَ: عَنْ أَيِّ بَالِهِ تَسْأَلُ؟ قُلْتُ: عَنْ صَوْمِهِ، قَالَ: إِذَا رَأَيْتَ هِلَالَ الْمُحَرَّمِ فَاعْدُدْ، فَإِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ مِنْ تَاسِعِهِ فَأَصْبِحْ مِنْهُ صَائِمًا، قُلْتُ: أَكَذَا كَانَ يَصُومُهُ مُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ
Hakam bin A'raj says: I went to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), while he was sitting leaning near the well of Zamzam. I also sat with him; he was the best companion. I asked: Tell me about the Day of Ashura. He said: Which aspect of it do you want to ask about? I said: About the fasting of that day. He said: When you see the crescent of the month of Muharram, keep counting the dates; when the morning of the 9th of Muharram comes, fast on that day. I asked: Did Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) also fast in this way? He said: Yes.
Hadith 3927
((وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ)، بِنَحْوِهِ وَفِيهِ) إِذَا أَنْتَ أَهَلَلْتَ الْمُحَرَّمَ فَاعْدُدْ تِسْعًا ثُمَّ أَصْبِحْ يَوْمَ التَّاسِعِ صَائِمًا، الْحَدِيثَ كَمَا تَقَدَّمَ
. (Second chain of narration) In this it is stated: When you see the crescent of the month of Muharram, then keep counting until the ninth of Muharram, and on the morning of the ninth of Muharram, observe the fast. The rest of the hadith is the same as mentioned above.
Hadith 3928
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَئِنْ بَقِيتُ إِلَى قَابِلٍ لَأَصُومَنَّ الْيَوْمَ التَّاسِعَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If I remain alive until next year, I will surely fast on the ninth of Muharram.
Hadith 3929
وَعَنْهُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((صُومُوا يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَخَالِفُوا فِيهِ الْيَهُودَ وَصُومُوا قَبْلَهُ يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْدَهُ يَوْمًا))
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Observe fasting on the Day of Ashura, but oppose the Jews in this matter, and that is by fasting a day before it or a day after it.
