بَابُ النَّهْيِ عَنْ صَوْمِ يَوْمَيِ الْعِيدَيْنِ
Chapter: Prohibition of Fasting on the Two Eid Days
Hadith 3857
عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ قَالَ: شَهِدْتُّ الْعِيدَ مَعَ عُمَرَ (بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) فَبَدَأَ بِالصَّلَاةِ قَبْلَ الْخُطْبَةِ، وَقَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ صِيَامِ هَذَيْنِ الْيَوْمَيْنِ، أَمَّا يَوْمُ الْفِطْرِ فَفِطْرُكُمْ مِنْ صَوْمِكُمْ، وَأَمَّا يَوْمُ الْأَضْحَى فَكُلُوا مِنْ نُسُكِكُمْ
Abu Ubaid says: On the occasion of Eid, I was present with Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He led the prayer before the sermon and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting on these two days of Eid. (The reason is that) Eid al-Fitr is the day of breaking your fast after (a month of) fasting, and Eid al-Adha is the day of sacrifice, so eat the meat of sacrifice on it.
Hadith 3858
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ صَوْمِ يَوْمِ الْفِطْرِ وَيَوْمِ الْأَضْحَى
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) forbade fasting on the days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
Hadith 3859
عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ ابْنَ عُمَرَ وَهُوَ يَمْشِي بِمِنًى، فَقَالَ: نَذَرْتُ أَنْ أَصُومَ كُلَّ يَوْمِ ثَلَاثَاءَ أَوْ أَرْبَعَاءَ، فَوَافَقَتْ هَذَا الْيَوْمَ، يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ، فَمَا تَرَى؟ قَالَ: أَمَرَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى بِوَفَاءِ النَّذْرِ، وَنَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَوْ قَالَ: نُهِينَا أَنْ نَصُومَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ، قَالَ: فَظَنَّ الرَّجُلُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ فَقَالَ: إِنِّي نَذَرْتُ أَنْ أَصُومَ كُلَّ يَوْمِ ثَلَاثَاءَ أَوْ أَرْبَعَاءَ، فَوَافَقَتْ هَذَا الْيَوْمَ، يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ، فَقَالَ: أَمَرَ اللَّهُ بِوَفَاءِ النَّذْرِ وَنَهَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْ قَالَ: نُهِينَا أَنْ نَصُومَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ، قَالَ: فَمَا زَادَهُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ حَتَّى أَسْنَدَ فِي الْجَبَلِ
Ziyad bin Jubair says that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was walking in Mina when a man asked him a question, saying: I have made a vow to fast every Tuesday or Wednesday, but now this day is coming on the day of Eid al-Adha. What is your opinion about this? He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah Almighty has commanded the fulfillment of vows, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden us from fasting on the day of Eid al-Adha. The man thought that perhaps he had not heard his question, so he repeated: I have made a vow to fast every Tuesday or Wednesday, but this time this day is coming on the day of Eid al-Adha. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah Almighty has commanded the fulfillment of vows, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden us from fasting on the day of Eid al-Adha. He did not say anything more than this until he climbed the mountain.
