It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw a man during a journey around whom people had gathered, shade was provided over him, and people were saying that he is a fasting person. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: It is not righteousness that you fast while traveling.

Abu Ta’mah narrates: He says, I was present with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). A man came and said: O Abu Abdur Rahman! I have the strength to fast while traveling (so should I fast)? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever does not accept the concession granted by Allah, he will receive sin equal to the mountains of Arafah.

Bashar bin Harb says: I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), "What do you say about fasting while traveling?" He said, "If I tell you, will you accept it?" I said, "Yes." He said, "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would leave this Madinah, he would shorten the prayers and also leave fasting until he returned."
