First Section: Prohibition of Continuous Fasting and Its Permissibility as a Special Privilege for the Prophet
Hadith 3809
Under this chapter, the following sub-chapters and hadiths have been mentioned.
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنِ الْوِصَالِ فِي الصِّيَامِ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: إِنَّكَ تَفْعَلُهُ، فَقَالَ: ((إِنِّي لَسْتُ كَأَحَدِكُمْ إِنِّي أَظَلُّ، يُطْعِمُنِي رَبِّي وَيَسْقِينِي))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade continuous fasting (wisal), someone said to him: "You yourself observe wisal." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "I am not like you; my situation is such that my Lord feeds me and gives me drink."
Hadith 3810
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ): أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَاصَلَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَوَاصَلَ النَّاسُ فَنَهَاهُمْ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: إِنَّكَ تُوَاصِلُ، قَالَ: ((إِنِّي لَسْتُ مِثْلَكُمْ إِنِّي أُطْعَمُ وَأُسْقَى))
(Second chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, practiced wisal (continuous fasting) in the month of Ramadan, so the people also began to practice wisal. But when he, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade them, someone said to him: You yourself practice wisal? He, peace and blessings be upon him, replied: I am not like you; I am given food and drink.
Hadith 3811
عَنْ مُعَاذَةَ، قَالَتْ: سَأَلَتِ امْرَأَةٌ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا وَأَنَا شَاهِدَةٌ عَنْ وَصْلِ صِيَامِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ لَهَا: أَتَعْمَلِينَ كَعَمَلِهِ؟ فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ كَانَ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ، وَكَانَ عَمَلُهُ نَافِلَةً لَهُ
Lady Mu’adhah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: A woman asked Lady A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) fasting continuously without breaking the fast, and I was also present there. So Lady A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Can you act like the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)? Allah Almighty has forgiven all his past and future sins, and his actions were voluntary (nafl).
Hadith 3812
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُوَاصِلُ مِنَ السَّحَرِ إِلَى السَّحَرِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to observe continuous fasting from one pre-dawn meal (suhoor) to the next.
Hadith 3813
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْوِصَالِ فِي الصِّيَامِ
Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade continuous fasting (wisal).
Hadith 3814
عَنْ لَيْلَى امْرَأَةِ بَشِيرٍ، قَالَتْ: أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَصُومَ يَوْمَيْنِ مُوَاصَلَةً فَمَنَعَنِي بَشِيرٌ وَقَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْهُ، وَقَالَ: ((يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ النَّصَارَى وَلَكِنْ صُومُوا كَمَا أَمَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَأَتِمُّوا الصِّيَامَ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ، فَإِذَا كَانَ اللَّيْلُ فَأَفْطِرُوا))
Lady Laila, the wife of Bashir (may Allah be pleased with her), says: I wanted to fast for two consecutive days without breaking the fast, but my husband Bashir stopped me from doing so and said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden this. He (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: This is what the Christians do. You should fast in the manner that Allah has commanded you, that is, complete the fast until nightfall, and when night comes, then break your fast.
Hadith 3815
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَا تُوَاصِلُوا))، قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّكَ تُوَاصِلُ، قَالَ: ((إِنِّي لَسْتُ مِثْلَكُمْ، إِنِّي أَبِيتُ يُطْعِمُنِي رَبِّي وَيَسْقِينِي))، قَالَ: فَلَمْ يَنْتَهُوا عَنِ الْوِصَالِ، فَوَاصَلَ بِهِمُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَيْنِ وَلَيْلَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ رَأَوُا الْهِلَالَ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَوْ تَأَخَّرَ الْهِلَالُ لَزِدْتُكُمْ)) كَالْمُنَكِّلِ بِهِمْ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do not observe continuous fasting (wisal). But the Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! You yourself observe wisal. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I am not like you; I spend the night in such a state that my Lord feeds me and gives me drink. Nevertheless, the people did not refrain from wisal. (As a result,) the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, observed continuous fasting with them for two days and two nights, then the moon was sighted. Then the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If the moon had not appeared, I would have continued wisal even more. In fact, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was making this a lesson-giving punishment for them.
