Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the month of Ramadan arrived, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The month of Ramadan has begun, it is a blessed month, Allah Almighty has made fasting in this month obligatory upon you, in this month the gates of Paradise are opened and all the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are also chained. In this month there is a night which is better than a thousand months; whoever is deprived of the blessing of this night is truly deprived.

‘Arfajah says: I was present in the gathering of ‘Utbah bin Farqad, and he was speaking about the month of Ramadan. In the meantime, a companion arrived; when ‘Utbah saw him, he became overawed and fell silent, and said: You speak about the month of Ramadan. That companion said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say that in the month of Ramadan the gates of Hell are closed, the gates of Paradise are opened, and the devils are chained, and during this month an angel keeps announcing: O seeker of goodness! Rejoice, and O seeker of evil! Now desist, until Ramadan passes.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that although the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was the most generous of all people, he would become even more generous when he met Jibreel (Gabriel), peace be upon him, during the month of Ramadan. Every night of Ramadan, Jibreel, peace be upon him, would meet him and they would review the Qur’an together. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was more generous with wealth than the sent wind.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: My Ummah has been given five such virtues in the month of Ramadan that were not given to any Ummah before them. Their details are as follows: (1) The smell from the mouth of a fasting person is purer with Allah than the fragrance of musk, (2) The angels pray for mercy for them until they break their fast, (3) Allah Almighty adorns His Paradise every day and says to it: Soon My righteous servants will cast aside their hardships and difficulties and come to you, (4) In this month, the rebellious devils are chained and cannot carry out their activities as they do on ordinary days, and (5) Allah Almighty forgives my Ummah in the last night of this month. Someone asked: O Messenger of Allah! Is this the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, no, the fact is that the laborer is given his wages when he has completed his work.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: By the One by whom the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, swore an oath! There is no month better for the Muslims than the month of Ramadan, and there is no month worse for the hypocrites than this. The reason is that the people of faith prepare strength for worship in this month, while the hypocrite becomes engrossed in seeking out the faults and shortcomings of people during this month. This month is a great opportunity for the believer and also a chance for the wicked.

(Second chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: By the One in Whose hand is the soul of the Messenger of Allah! This month is casting its shadow over you; there is no month better than this for the believers, and there is no month worse than this for the hypocrites. Allah, the Exalted, writes the reward of this month and its supererogatory acts even before its arrival, as well as its sins, punishment, and wretchedness. The reason for this is that the believer prepares strength for spending in worship during it, while the hypocrite remains heedless and seeks out people's faults. Thus, this month is a gain for the believer and also a gain for the wicked.
