بَابُ مَنْ تَصَدَّقَ بِعُشْرِ مَالِهِ وَمَنْ تَصَدَّقَ بِثُلُثِهِ وَمَنْ تَصَدَّقَ بِنَاقَةٍ
Chapter: Whoever Gave a Tenth of His Wealth in Charity, or a Third, or a She-Camel
Hadith 3616
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ جَاءَ ثَلَاثَةُ نَفَرٍ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! كَانَتْ لِي مِائَةُ دِينَارٍ فَتَصَدَّقْتُ مِنْهَا بِعَشَرَةِ دَنَانِيرَ، وَقَالَ الْآخَرُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! كَانَتْ لِي عَشَرَةُ دَنَانِيرَ فَتَصَدَّقْتُ مِنْهَا بِدِينَارٍ، وَقَالَ الْآخَرُ: كَانَ لِي دِينَارٌ فَتَصَدَّقْتُ بِعُشْرِهِ؟ قَالَ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((كُلُّكُمْ فِي الْأَجْرِ سَوَاءٌ كُلُّكُمْ تَصَدَّقَ بِعُشْرِ مَالِهِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that three men came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and one of them said: O Messenger of Allah! I had one hundred dinars and I gave ten dinars in charity. The second said: O Messenger of Allah! I had ten dinars, and I gave one dinar in charity. The third said: O Messenger of Allah! I had one dinar, and I gave a tenth of it in charity. After hearing their words, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: In terms of reward, you are all equal, because each of you has given a tenth of his wealth in charity.
Hadith 3617
عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ أَبِي لُبَابَةَ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ أَبَا لُبَابَةَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُنْذِرِ لَمَّا تَابَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ، قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّ مِنْ تَوْبَتِي أَنْ أَهْجُرَ دَارَ قَوْمِي وَأُسَاكِنَكَ وَأَنْ أَنْخَلَعَ مِنْ مَالِي صَدَقَةً لِلَّهِ وَلِرَسُولِهِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((يُجْزِئُ عَنْكَ الثُّلُثُ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Lubabah bin Abd al-Mundhir that when Allah Almighty accepted his repentance, he said: O Messenger of Allah! The requirement of my repentance being accepted is that I leave the house of my people, stay with you, and give all my wealth in charity for Allah and His Messenger. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Giving one third of your wealth in charity will suffice for you.
Hadith 3618
عَنْ أَبِي السَّلِيلِ قَالَ: وَقَفَ عَلَيْنَا رَجُلٌ فِي مَجْلِسِنَا بِالْبَقِيعِ فَقَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي أَوْ عَمِّي أَنَّهُ رَأَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالْبَقِيعِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: ((مَنْ يَتَصَدَّقُ بِصَدَقَةٍ أَشْهَدُ لَهُ بِهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ))، قَالَ: فَحَلَلْتُ مِنْ عِمَامَتِي لَوْثًا أَوْ لَوْثَيْنِ وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَتَصَدَّقَ بِهِمَا، فَأَدْرَكَنِي مَا يُدْرِكُ بَنِي آدَمَ، فَعَقَدْتُ عَلَيَّ عِمَامَتِي، فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ وَلَمْ أَرَ بِالْبَقِيعِ رَجُلًا أَشَدَّ سَوَادًا أَصْفَرَ مِنْهُ وَلَا أَدْمَى يَعْبُرُ بِنَاقَةٍ لَمْ أَرَ بِالْبَقِيعِ نَاقَةً أَحْسَنَ مِنْهَا، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! أَصَدَقَةً؟ قَالَ: ((نَعَمْ))، قَالَ: دُونَكَ هَذِهِ النَّاقَةَ، قَالَ: فَلَمَزَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ: هَذَا يَتَصَدَّقُ بِهَذِهِ؟ فَوَاللَّهِ! لَهِيَ خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ، قَالَ: فَسَمِعَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: ((كَذَبْتَ، بَلْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ وَمِنْهَا)) ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ((وَيْلٌ لِأَصْحَابِ الْمِئِينِ مِنَ الْإِبِلِ)) ثَلَاثًا، قَالُوا: إِلَّا مَنْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ!? قَالَ: ((إِلَّا مَنْ قَالَ بِالْمَالِ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا))، وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَ كَفَّيْهِ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ((قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُزْهِدُ الْمُجَاهِدُ))
Abu Salil says: We were in Baqi when a man came to us and said that my father or uncle narrated to me that he saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, at the place of Baqi, while he, peace and blessings be upon him, was saying: Is there anyone who will give charity, so that I may testify in his favor on the Day of Resurrection? My father or uncle said: I also loosened one or two folds of my turban so that I might give that as charity, but then I was overtaken by the same thing that overtakes the children of Adam, so I wrapped the turban back on my head. Meanwhile, a man came; I had not seen anyone in Baqi more dark-skinned and wheat-colored than him. He had a fine she-camel with him; I had not seen a better and more beautiful she-camel in the area of Baqi. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Was it your intention to ask for charity? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Yes. He said: Then please accept this she-camel. A man said: Is this person giving such a fine she-camel in charity? By Allah, his she-camel is better than his own. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, heard his words and said three times: You are wrong; rather, the one giving charity is better than you and better than this she-camel. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Woe to those who have hundreds of camels. He said this three times. The companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! Who among them is exempted? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Yes, the one who distributes his wealth in this way, who scatters it in this manner. Along with this, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, joined both his palms and moved them to the right and left. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Successful is the person who has little wealth and devotes himself to worship.
