Hadith 3553
Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave a horse in charity in the way of Allah. Then when he saw that it or its offspring was being sold, he intended to buy it back and asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not buy it now, so that (on the Day of Resurrection) you may receive it in full (or the narrator said) you may receive its full reward. On one occasion, the narrator said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade him and said: Do not buy it and do not take back what you have given in charity.
Hadith 3554
(Second chain) Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I gave a horse in charity in the way of Allah during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but its owner wasted it, so I intended to buy it back, while I also expected that he would sell it to me at a cheap price. Then I thought that I should first ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not buy it, even if he gives it to you in exchange for one dirham. The example of one who takes back what he has given in charity is like a dog that vomits and then licks it up.
Hadith 3555
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave a horse in charity in the way of Allah Almighty, and later saw that it was being sold, so he wanted to buy it. But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Do not take back what you have given in charity.
Hadith 3556
Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man gave a mare named Ghamrah or Ghamra in charity in the way of Allah. Later, he saw that the same mare or its foal, which was attributed to that mare, was being sold, but he was forbidden from doing so.
Hadith 3557
It is narrated from Abu Uraif bin Suraee’ that a man asked Sayyiduna Ibn Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him): There was an orphan child under my care, I gave him a slave girl as charity, then that child passed away and I am his heir (now what will happen to that slave girl)? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to him: I will tell you a hadith which I myself heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the matter is that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) gave a horse as charity in the way of Allah, then when he saw that the man had put it up for sale at a place, he intended to buy it back, but when he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade him from doing so and said: When you give something as charity, then let it go (i.e., do not think of taking it back in any way).
Hadith 3558
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraidah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I had given a slave girl to my mother as charity, but it so happened that my mother passed away and that slave girl has come to me as inheritance. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty has given you the reward and has returned the same slave girl to you as inheritance. The same woman said: My mother passed away without performing Hajj; now if I perform Hajj on her behalf, will it suffice for her? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. She then said: My mother also owed a month of fasting; if I fast on her behalf, will it suffice for her? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes.
