فَصْلٌ رَابِعٌ فِيمَا جَاءَ فِي ضَغْطَةِ الْقَبْرِ
Fourth section on what is reported regarding the squeezing of the grave
Hadith 3329
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمًا إِلَى سَعْدِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، حِينَ تُوُفِّيَ، قَالَ: فَلَمَّا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَوُضِعَ فِي قَبْرِهِ وَسُوِّيَ عَلَيْهِ سَبَّحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَبَّحْنَا طَوِيلًا، ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَكَبَّرْنَا، فَقِيلَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! لِمَ سَبَّحْتَ، ثُمَّ كَبَّرْتَ؟ قَالَ: لَقَدْ تَضَايَقَ عَلَى هَذَا الْعَبْدِ الصَّالِحِ قَبْرُهُ حَتَّى فَرَّجَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَنْهُ
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Sa’d bin Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, we went along with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led his funeral prayer. Afterwards, when he was placed in the grave and the earth was leveled over him, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept reciting “Subhan Allah” and “Allahu Akbar” for a long time. We also kept saying “Subhan Allah” and “Allahu Akbar” along with him. It was asked: O Messenger of Allah! What was the reason for saying “Subhan Allah” and “Allahu Akbar” at this moment? He replied: The grave had become constricted for this righteous servant, until Allah Almighty made it spacious for him.
Hadith 3330
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((إِنَّ لِلْقَبْرِ ضَغْطَةً، وَلَوْ كَانَ أَحَدٌ نَاجِيًا مِنْهَا نَجَا مِنْهَا سَعْدُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ))
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely, there is a squeezing in the grave, and if anyone could have been saved from it, it would have been Sa’d bin Mu’adh.
Hadith 3331
عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ الْيَمَانِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي جَنَازَةٍ، فَلَمَّا انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى الْقَبْرِ قَعَدَ عَلَى شَفَتِهِ فَجَعَلَ يَرُدُّ بَصَرَهُ فِيهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ((يُضْغَطُ الْمُؤْمِنُ فِيهِ ضَغْطَةً تَزُولُ مِنْهَا حَمَائِلُهُ وَيُمْلَأُ عَلَى الْكَافِرِ نَارًا))، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ((أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشَرِّ عِبَادِ اللَّهِ؟ الْفَظُّ الْمُسْتَكْبِرُ، أَلَا أَخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ عِبَادِ اللَّهِ؟ الضَّعِيفُ الْمُسْتَضْعَفُ ذُو الطِّمْرَيْنِ لَوْ أَقْسَمَ عَلَى اللَّهِ لَأَبَرَّ اللَّهُ قَسَمَهُ))
Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were present with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at a funeral. When we came near the grave, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down at the edge of the grave and began to look inside it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The believer is pressed in the grave to such an extent that the bones of his shoulders and chest are displaced from their places, and the grave of the disbeliever is filled with fire. Shall I not tell you who are the worst among the servants of Allah? They are those who are ill-tempered and arrogant. And shall I not also tell you who are the best servants of Allah? They are those weak and poor ones who wear two worn-out garments, whom people also consider weak, but if they swear by Allah, He fulfills their oath.
