فَصْلٌ ثَالِثٌ فِي عَذَابِ عُصَاةِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الْقَبْرِ وَمَا يُخَفِّفُهُ عَنْهُمْ وَإِنَّهُ أَكْثَرُهُ بِسَبَبِ التَّبَوُّلُ
Third section on the punishment of sinful believers in the grave, what lessens it for them, and that most of it is due to urine
Hadith 3320
عَنْ طَاوُوسٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِقَبْرَيْنِ فَقَالَ: ((إِنَّهُمَا لَيُعَذَّبَانِ، وَمَا يُعَذَّبَانِ فِي كَبِيرٍ، أَمَّا أَحَدُهُمَا فَكَانَ لَا يَسْتَنْزِهُ مِنَ الْبَوْلِ، (قَالَ وَكِيعٌ مِنْ بَوْلِهِ) وَأَمَّا الْآخَرُ فَكَانَ يَمْشِي بِالنَّمِيمَةِ))، ثُمَّ أَخَذَ جَرِيدَةً فَشَقَّهَا بِنِصْفَيْنِ، فَغَرَزَ فِي كُلِّ قَبْرٍ وَاحِدَةً، فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! لِمَ صَنَعْتَ هَذَا؟ قَالَ: ((لَعَلَّهُمَا أَنْ يُّخَفَّفَ عَنْهُمَا مَا كَانَتَا رَطْبَتَيْنِ، [قَالَ وَكِيعٌ تَيْبَسَتَا]))
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by two graves. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These two are being punished, and they are not being punished for a major sin. One of them did not protect himself from his urine, and the other used to carry tales (gossip). After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a twig, split it into two parts, and placed each part on a grave. The companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! Why did you do this? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Perhaps their punishment will be lightened as long as these do not dry up.
Hadith 3321
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِحَائِطٍ مِنْ حِيطَانِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَسَمِعَ صَوْتَ إِنْسَانَيْنِ يُعَذَّبَانِ فِي قَبْرِهِمَا فَذَكَرَهُ حَتَّى يَيْبَسَا أَوْ مَا لَمْ يَيْبَسَا
(Second chain of narration) Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by one of the gardens of Madinah Munawwarah and heard the voices of two people being punished in the grave, … … .
Hadith 3322
وَعَنْ يَعْلَى بْنِ سَيَابَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِنَحْوِهِ
Sayyiduna Ya'la bin Siabah (may Allah be pleased with him) has also narrated a similar narration from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 3323
عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ (نُفَيْعِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) قَالَ: بَيْنَا أَنَا أُمَاشِي رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ آخِذٌ بِيَدِي وَرَجُلٌ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَإِذَا نَحْنُ بِقَبْرَيْنِ أَمَامَنَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِنَّهُمَا لَيُعَذَّبَانِ وَمَا يُعَذَّبَانِ فِي كَبِيرٍ وَبَلَى، فَأَيُّكُمْ يَأْتِينِي بِجَرِيدَةٍ))، فَاسْتَبَقْنَا، فَسَبَقْتُهُ فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِجَرِيدَةٍ فَكَسَرَهَا نِصْفَيْنِ فَأَلْقَى عَلَى ذَا الْقَبْرِ قِطْعَةً وَعَلَى ذَا الْقَبْرِ قِطْعَةً وَقَالَ: ((إِنَّهُ يُهَوِّنُ عَلَيْهِمَا مَا كَانَتَا رَطْبَتَيْنِ، وَمَا يُعَذَّبَانِ إِلَّا فِي الْبَوْلِ وَالْغِيبَةِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah Nafi’ bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while he was holding my hand, and a man was walking on his left side. Suddenly, two graves appeared before us. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These two are being punished, and they are not being punished for a major sin, although (these sins are indeed major). Who among you will bring a stick? Upon hearing this, both of us rushed, but I got ahead and brought a stick. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) split it into two parts, placed one part on one grave and the other part on the other grave, and said: As long as these remain fresh, their punishment will be lessened. And they are being punished because of urine and tale-bearing.
Hadith 3324
عَنْ جَسْرَةَ قَالَتْ: حَدَّثَنِي عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: دَخَلَتْ عَلَيَّ امْرَأَةٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ، فَقَالَتْ: إِنَّ عَذَابَ الْقَبْرِ مِنَ الْبَوْلِ، فَقُلْتُ: كَذَبْتِ، فَقَالَتْ: بَلَى إِنَّا لَنَقْرِضُ مِنْهُ الثَّوْبَ وَالْجِلْدَ، فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ وَقَدِ ارْتَفَعَتْ أَصْوَاتُنَا، فَقَالَ: ((مَا هَذِهِ؟))، فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِمَا قَالَتْ، فَقَالَ: ((صَدَقَتْ))، قَالَتْ: فَمَا صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ يَوْمِئِذٍ إِلَّا قَالَ فِي دُبُرِ الصَّلَاةِ: ((اَللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ جِبْرِيلَ وَمِيكَائِيلَ أَعِذْنِي مِنْ حَرِّ النَّارِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ))
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: A Jewish woman came to me and said: Because of urine, there is punishment in the grave. I said: You are wrong, she said: It is indeed so, in fact, because of it we even cut our clothes and shoes. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out for prayer and our voices had become loud, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is this?" I mentioned the statement of the Jewish woman. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: She is telling the truth. After that, whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prayer, at the end he would recite this supplication: "Allahumma Rabb Jibreel wa Mika'il (a‘idhni min harri an-nar wa ‘adhabi al-qabr)." (O Allah! Lord of Jibreel and Mika'il! Protect me from the heat of the Fire and the punishment of the grave.)
Hadith 3325
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((أَكْثَرُ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ فِي الْبَوْلِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Most of the punishment of the grave is due to urine.
Hadith 3326
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي يَوْمٍ شَدِيدِ الْحَرِّ نَحْوَ بَقِيعِ الْغَرْقَدِ، قَالَ: فَكَانَ النَّاسُ يَمْشُونَ خَلْفَهُ، قَالَ: فَلَمَّا سَمِعَ صَوْتَ النِّعَالِ وَقَرَّ ذَلِكَ فِي نَفْسِهِ، فَجَلَسَ حَتَّى قَدَّمَهُمْ أَمَامَهُ لِئَلَّا يَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِهِ مِنَ الْكِبْرِ، فَلَمَّا مَرَّ بِبَقِيعِ الْغَرْقَدِ، إِذَا بِقَبْرَيْنِ قَدْ دُفِنَ فِيهِمَا رَجُلَانِ، قَالَ: فَوَقَفَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: ((مَنْ دَفَنْتُمْ هَا هُنَا الْيَوْمَ؟))، قَالُوا: يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ! فُلَانٌ وَفُلَانٌ، قَالَ: ((إِنَّهُمَا لَيَعُذَّبَانِ الْآنَ وَيُفْتَنَانِ فِي قَبْرَيْهِمَا))، قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! فِيمَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ: ((أَمَّا أَحَدُهُمَا فَكَانَ لَا يَسْتَنْزِهُ مِنَ الْبَوْلِ، وَأَمَّا الْآخَرُ فَكَانَ يَمْشِي بِالنَّمِيمَةِ))، وَأَخَذَ جَرِيدَةً رَطْبَةً، فَشَقَّهَا ثُمَّ جَعَلَهَا عَلَى الْقَبْرَيْنِ، قَالُوا: يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ! وَلِمَ فَعَلْتَ؟ قَالَ: ((لِيُخَفَّفَنَّ عَنْهُمَا))، قَالُوا: يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ! وَحَتَّى مَتَى يُعَذِّبُهُمَا اللَّهُ؟ قَالَ: ((غَيْبٌ لَا يَعْلَمُهُ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَلَوْلَا تَمْرِيغُ قُلُوبِكُمْ أَوْ تَزَايُدُكُمْ فِي الْحَدِيثِ لَسَمِعْتُمْ مَا أَسْمَعُ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Baqi’ al-Gharqad on a very hot day, and people were walking behind him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the sound of the people’s shoes, it was burdensome for him, so he sat down right there until the people passed ahead of him, so that no pride would arise in his heart. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Baqi’ al-Gharqad, he saw two graves; people had buried two men in them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped there and asked: “Whom have you buried here today?” The companions replied: “O Messenger of Allah! These are such-and-such two men.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “They are being punished in their graves right now.” The companions asked: “O Messenger of Allah! What is the reason for their punishment?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “One of them did not protect himself from urine, and the other used to carry tales.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a fresh twig, split it, and placed it on both graves. The companions asked: “O Messenger of Allah! Why did you do this?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Because of this, their punishment will be lightened.” The companions said: “O Messenger of Allah! For how long will Allah punish them?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “This is a matter of the unseen, which no one knows except Allah.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If it were not for the changing states of your hearts or your excessive speech, you would also hear what I hear.”
Hadith 3327
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى قَبْرٍ فَقَالَ: ((أْتُونِي بِجَرِيدَتَيْنِ))، فَجَعَلَ إِحْدَاهُمَا عِنْدَ رَأْسِهِ وَالْأُخْرَى عِنْدَ رِجْلَيْهِ، فَقِيلَ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ! أَيَنْفَعُهُ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ: ((لَنْ يَزَالَ أَنْ يُخَفَّفَ عَنْهُ بَعْضُ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ مَا كَانَ فِيهِمَا نُدُوٌّ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a grave and said: Bring me two sticks. He (peace and blessings be upon him) placed one at the head and the other at the foot (of the grave). Someone asked: O Messenger of Allah! Will this benefit the deceased? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There will be some reduction in the punishment of the grave as long as there is moisture in them.
Hadith 3328
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ قَالَ: كُنْتُ جَالِسًا مَعَ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ صُرَدٍ وَخَالِدِ بْنِ عُرْفُطَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا، قَالَ: فَذَكَرَا رَجُلًا مَاتَ مِنْ بَطْنِهِ، قَالَ: فَكَأَنَّمَا اشْتَهَى أَنْ يُصَلِّيَا عَلَيْهِ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا لِلْآخَرِ: أَلَمْ يَقُلِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَنْ قَتَلَهُ بَطْنُهُ فَإِنَّهُ لَنْ يُعَذَّبَ فِي قَبْرِهِ؟))، قَالَ الْآخَرُ: بَلَى
Abdullah bin Yasar says: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Sulaiman bin Surad and Sayyiduna Khalid bin 'Urfatah (may Allah be pleased with them). People informed that a certain man had died due to a stomach illness. They wanted to perform his funeral prayer, and one said to the other: Did the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not say that whoever dies due to a stomach illness will never be punished in the grave? The other replied: Yes, he did say that.
