8 hadith
Hadith 3297
Under this chapter, the following sub-chapters and hadiths have been mentioned.
Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)'s servant Hani says that when Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) would stand by a grave, he would weep so much that his beard would become wet. Someone said to him: You mention Paradise and Hell as well, but you do not weep as much at that time, and yet you weep so much when you see a grave? He said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The grave is the first stage among the stages of the Hereafter; if a person is successful in it, then the subsequent stages will be easier for him, but if a person does not attain salvation from it, then the subsequent stages will be more difficult for him. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Allah! Whenever I have seen (the scenes of Allah's punishment), I have found the scene of the grave to be the most terrifying.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the examiners (angels) of the grave. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Will our intellects be returned to us there? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, just as they are today. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A stone in his mouth.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Every person among you is shown his place (in the grave) morning and evening; if he is among the people of Paradise, then (he is shown) the place of the people of Paradise, and if he is among the people of Hell, then (he is shown) the place of the people of Hell. And it is also said to him: This will be your abode when you are raised on the Day of Resurrection.

Hadith 3300
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: شَهِدْتُّ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَنَازَةً فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ! إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةَ تُبْتَلَى فِي قُبُورِهَا، فَإِذَا الْإِنْسَانُ دُفِنَ فَتَفَرَّقَ عَنْهُ أَصْحَابُهُ، جَاءَهُ مَلَكٌ، فِي يَدِهِ مِطْرَاقٌ فَأَقْعَدَهُ قَالَ: مَا تَقُولُ فِي هَذَا الرَّجُلِ؟ فَإِنْ كَانَ مُؤْمِنًا قَالَ: أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، فَيَقُولُ: صَدَقْتَ، ثُمَّ يُفْتَحُ لَهُ بَابٌ إِلَى النَّارِ فَيَقُولُ: هَذَا كَانَ مَنْزِلُكَ لَوْ كَفَرْتَ بِرَبِّكَ، فَأَمَّا إِذْ آمَنْتَ فَهَذَا مَنْزِلُكَ، فَيُفْتَحُ لَهُ بَابٌ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ فَيُرِيدُ أَنْ يَنْهَضَ إِلَيْهِ، فَيَقُولُ لَهُ: اسْكُنْ وَيُفْسَحُ لَهُ فِي قَبْرِهِ (وَإِنْ كَانَ كَافِرًا أَوْ مُنَافِقًا) يَقُولُ لَهُ: مَا تَقُولُ فِي هَذَا الرَّجُلِ؟ فَيَقُولُ: لَا أَدْرِي، سَمِعْتُ النَّاسَ يَقُولُونَ شَيْئًا فَيَقُولُ: لَا دَرَيْتَ وَلَا تَلَيْتَ وَلَا اهْتَدَيْتَ، ثُمَّ يُفْتَحُ بَابٌ إِلَى جَنَّةٍ فَيَقُولُ: هَذَا مَنْزِلُكَ لَوْ آمَنْتَ بِرَبِّكَ، فَأَمَّا إِذْ كَفَرْتَ بِهِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَبْدَلَكَ بِهِ هَذَا وَيُفْتَحُ لَهُ بَابٌ إِلَى النَّارِ، ثُمَّ يَقْمَعُهُ قَمْعَةً بِالْمِطْرَاقِ يَسْمَعُهَا خَلْقُ اللَّهِ كُلُّهُمْ غَيْرَ الثَّقَلَيْنِ))، فَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! مَا أَحَدٌ يَقُومُ عَلَيْهِ مَلَكٌ فِي يَدِهِ مِطْرَاقٌ إِلَّا هَبَلَ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: {يُثَبِّتُ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِالْقَوْلِ الثَّابِتِ}
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at a funeral, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O people! This Ummah will be tested in their graves. When a person is buried and his companions leave him, an angel comes to him with a mace in his hand. He makes the deceased sit up and asks: What do you say about this man (i.e., Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him)? If he is a believer, he says: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger. Upon hearing this, the angel says: You have spoken the truth. Then a door towards Hell is opened for him, and the angel says: If you had disbelieved in your Lord, this would have been your abode, but now you are a believer, so your abode is this. Then a door from Paradise is opened for him, and when the deceased intends to move towards it, the angel says: Remain at ease (here). Then his grave is expanded for him. And if the deceased is a disbeliever or a hypocrite, the angel asks him: What do you say about this person (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him)? He says: I do not know anything, I only used to hear people saying something. The angel says: You neither understood, nor recited, nor received guidance. After that, a door from Paradise is opened for him, and the angel says: If you had believed in your Lord, this would have been your abode, but since you have disbelieved in your Lord, Allah Almighty has prepared another abode for you instead. Then a door towards Hell is opened for him, and the angel strikes him with a mighty blow from the mace, the sound of which is heard by all of Allah's creation except jinn and mankind. Upon hearing this hadith, some people said: O Messenger of Allah! When the angel stands by a person with a mace in his hand, will he not be terrified? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse in reply: {یُثَبِّتُ اللّٰہُ الَّذِیْنَ آمَنُوْا بِالْقَوْلِ الثَّابِتِ۔} (Surah Ibrahim: 27) meaning: Allah keeps the believers firm on the word of Tawheed.

Hadith 3301
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When a person is placed in the grave and the people (after his burial) return, he hears the sound of their footsteps. Then two angels come to him, make him sit up, and ask him about Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): What do you say about this man? The believing deceased says: I bear witness that he is the servant and Messenger of Allah. He is told: Look towards your place in Hell; Allah has prepared a place for you in Paradise instead of that. He looks at both his places, and his grave is expanded for him as far as seventy cubits until the Day of Resurrection, and it is filled with fresh blessings for him. As for the disbeliever or hypocrite, he is also asked the same question: What do you say about this person (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him)? He says: I do not know; I used to say what the people said, (but now I have no knowledge of anything). He is told: You neither understood nor recited. Then a blow is struck between his ears with an iron hammer, due to which he screams so loudly that all creatures near him hear his cry except for jinn and mankind, and his grave is made so tight for him that his ribs interlock with each other.

Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: A Jewish woman came to my door asking for food and said: May Allah protect you from the trial of Dajjal and the torment of the grave, give me food. I kept her waiting for quite a while until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived. I said: O Messenger of Allah! What is this Jewish woman saying? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What is she saying? I said: She says, may Allah protect you from the trial of Dajjal and the torment of the grave. Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, spread his hands, and began seeking refuge with Allah from the trial of Dajjal and the torment of the grave. Then he said: The trial of Dajjal is such a trial that every prophet has warned his nation about it. I also warn you about it in such a way that no prophet has warned his nation as I have. (Listen!) He will be one-eyed, whereas Allah Almighty is not one-eyed, and between his eyes the word "disbeliever" will be written; every believer will read it. As for the trial of the grave, you will also be tested regarding me and you will be questioned about me. When a deceased person is righteous, he is made to sit in the grave in such a state that there are no signs of panic or distress upon him. He is asked: What religion were you upon? He says: I was upon Islam. Then he is asked: The person who was sent among you, who is he? He replies: He is the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), he came to us with clear proofs from Allah and we affirmed him. After that, a window towards Hell is opened for him and he sees that parts of Hell are consuming each other. He is told: Look at what Allah has saved you from, look there. Then a window towards Paradise is opened for him, he sees the beauty and delights of Paradise and its other blessings, and he is told: This is your place in Paradise. The reality is that you lived in the world with certainty, died upon it, and, if Allah wills, you will be raised upon it. And if the deceased is evil, when he is made to sit in the grave, he is anxious and extremely frightened. He is asked: What religion were you upon in the world? He replies: I do not know anything. He is asked: The person who was sent among you, who is he? He says: I said what I heard people saying, (now I do not know anything). After that, a window towards Paradise is opened for him, he sees its beauty and its blessings, and he is told: Look at what Allah has turned away from you. Then a window towards Hell is opened for him, he sees that parts of it are consuming each other, and he is told: This is your place in Hell. The reality is that you were upon doubt, died upon it, and, if Allah wills, you will be raised upon it, then he is punished.

Abu Zubair says: I asked Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) about the angels who put people to trial in the grave. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say about this: People are tested in their graves. When a believer is placed in his grave and people return after burying him, a very awe-inspiring angel comes to him and says: What do you say about this person (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him)? The believer replies: He is the Messenger and servant of Allah. The angel says to him: Look at your place in Hell from which Allah has saved you, and look at your place which Allah Almighty has given you as a substitute for that place in Hell. Then he sees both places and says: Let me go, so I may give glad tidings to my family. But it is said to him: Stay. As for the hypocrite, when people return after burying him, he is made to sit and is asked: What do you say about this person (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him)? He says: I do not know, I just used to say what other people used to say. So it is said to him: You did not understand. This was your place in Paradise, but now in exchange for it, this is your place in Hell. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I also heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that every person will be raised on the same belief on which he died, that is, the believer on faith and the hypocrite on hypocrisy.

Hadith 3304
It is narrated from Sayyida Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When a person enters the grave, if he is a believer, then his good deeds such as prayer and fasting surround him. When the angel comes to him from the side of prayer, the prayer stops him, and when he comes from the side of fasting, the fasting stops him. Therefore, the angel calls out from a distance: Sit up. He sits up. The angel asks: What do you say about this man, meaning the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He asks in return: Which man? The angel says: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). He says: I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah. The angel says: How did you come to know this? Did you see him (peace and blessings be upon him)? He says: I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah. The angel says: You lived your life on this belief, you died on this, and you will be raised on this. If the deceased person is a disbeliever or a sinner, then the angel comes to him and there is nothing (in the form of deeds) to stop the angel from him. So the angel makes him sit and asks: What do you say about this man? He says: Which man? The angel says: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). He says: By Allah! I do not know anything, yes, whatever I used to hear people say, I used to say the same. The angel says to him: You lived your life on this, you died on this, and you will be raised on this. After that, a living creature is set upon him in his grave, it has a whip, the result of whose (strike) is like a burning ember the size of a large camel bucket. As long as Allah wills, it will keep striking him. That creature will be deaf, so that it does not have mercy on him by hearing his cries.
