Hadith 3289
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ سَعْدَ بْنَ عُبَادَةَ أَخَا بَنِي سَاعِدَةَ تُوُفِّيَتْ أُمُّهُ، وَهُوَ غَائِبٌ عَنْهَا، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّ أُمِّي تُوُفِّيَتْ وَأَنَا غَائِبٌ عَنْهَا، فَهَلْ يَنْفَعُهَا إِنْ تَصَدَّقْتُ بِشَيْءٍ عَنْهَا؟ قَالَ: ((نَعَمْ))، قَالَ: فَإِنِّي أُشْهِدُكَ أَنَّ حَائِطِي الْمِخْرَفَ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ: الْمِخْرَافَ) صَدَقَةٌ عَلَيْهَا
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the brother from Banu Sa'idah, Sayyiduna Sa'd bin 'Ubadah Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him), his mother passed away while he was not present. Later, he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! My mother died in my absence, now if I give charity on her behalf, will she benefit from it? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. So he said: I make you (peace and blessings be upon him) a witness that my garden named Mukhraf (or Mukhraf) is charity for her.
Hadith 3290
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَالَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِنَّ أُمِّي افْتُلِتَتْ نَفْسُهَا وَأَظُنُّهَا لَوْ تَكَلَّمَتْ تَصَدَّقَتْ، فَهَلْ لَهَا أَجْرٌ أَنْ أَتَصَدَّقَ عَنْهَا؟ قَالَ: ((نَعَمْ))
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that a man said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): My mother passed away suddenly, and I think that if she could have spoken, she would have given charity. So if I give charity on her behalf, will she receive the reward? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes.
Hadith 3291
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ شُعْبَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ أُمَّهُ مَاتَتْ فَقَالَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِنَّ أُمِّي مَاتَتْ أَفَأَتَصَدَّقُ عَنْهَا؟ قَالَ: ((نَعَمْ))، قَالَ: فَأَيُّ الصَّدَقَةِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ: ((سَقْيُ الْمَاءِ))، قَالَ: فَتِلْكَ سِقَايَةُ آلِ سَعْدٍ بِالْمَدِينَةِ، قَالَ شُعْبَةُ: فَقُلْتُ لِقَتَادَةَ: مَنْ يَقُولُ ’’تِلْكَ سِقَايَةُ آلِ سَعْدٍ‘‘؟ قَالَ: الْحَسَنُ
Hasan reports that Sayyiduna Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) ’s mother passed away. He asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): My mother has died, can I give charity on her behalf? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. He asked: Then which charity is best? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Providing water. He said: In Madinah, this is the waterway of the family of Sa’d. Shu’bah says: I asked Qatadah, who is the narrator who said the words “In Madinah, this is the waterway of the family of Sa’d”? He said: It is Hasan.
Hadith 3292
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ أُمِّي مَاتَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا نَذْرٌ، أَفَيُجْزِي عَنْهَا أَنْ أُعْتِقَ عَنْهَا؟ قَالَ: ((أَعْتِقْ عَنْ أُمِّكَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: My mother has passed away, and she had a vow upon her. If I free a slave on her behalf, will it suffice for her? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Free (a slave) on behalf of your mother.
Hadith 3293
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ أَنَّ الْعَاصَ بْنَ وَائِلٍ نَذَرَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ أَنْ يَنْحَرَ مِائَةَ بَدَنَةٍ، وَإِنَّ هِشَامَ بْنَ الْعَاصِ نَحَرَ حِصَّتَهُ خَمْسِينَ بَدَنَةً، وَأَنَّ عَمْرًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ: ((أَمَّا أَبُوكَ فَلَوْ كَانَ أَقَرَّ بِالتَّوْحِيدِ فَصُمْتَ وَتَصَدَّقْتَ عَنْهُ نَفَعَهُ ذَلِكَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Aas bin Wa'il had made a vow in the days of ignorance to sacrifice one hundred camels. (Then he died, and one of his sons) Hisham bin Aas sacrificed fifty camels from his share, but Sayyiduna Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If your father had affirmed the Oneness (of Allah), and then you fasted and gave charity on his behalf, it would have benefited him.
Hadith 3294
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَالَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِنَّ أَبِي مَاتَ وَتَرَكَ مَالًا وَلَمْ يُوصِ، فَهَلْ يُكَفِّرُ عَنْهُ أَنْ أَتَصَدَّقَ عَنْهُ؟ قَالَ: ((نَعَمْ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that a man said to the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "My father has passed away and he has left wealth, but he did not make any will. So if I give charity on his behalf, can it be an expiation for his sins?" The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Yes."
Hadith 3295
عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ غُلَامًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ: سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّ أُمِّي مَاتَتْ وَتَرَكَتْ حُلِيًّا أَفَأَتَصَدَّقُ بِهِ عَنْهَا؟ قَالَ: ((أُمُّكَ أَمَرَتْكَ بِذَلِكَ؟))، قَالَ: لَا، قَالَ: ((فَأَمْسِكْ عَلَيْكَ حُلِيَّ أُمِّكَ))
Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir رضي الله عنه reports that a man came to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم and asked: My mother has passed away leaving behind some jewelry, so can I give this jewelry in charity on her behalf? The Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said: Did your mother instruct you to do so? He replied: No. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said: Then keep your mother’s jewelry with yourself (and do not give it in charity).
Hadith 3296
عَنْ مَعْقِلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((يَاسٓ قَلْبُ الْقُرْآنِ، لَا يَقْرَؤُهَا رَجُلٌ يُرِيدُ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى وَالدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ إِلَّا غُفِرَ لَهُ وَاقْرَؤُهَا عَلَى مَوْتَاكُمْ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ma’qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surah Yasin is the heart of the Noble Qur’an. Whoever recites it seeking Allah Almighty and the home of the Hereafter, he will be forgiven. And recite this Surah over those who are near death.
