بَابُ النَّهْيِ عَنِ الْبِنَاءِ عَلَى الْقُبُورِ وَتَخْصِيصِهَا وَالْجُلُوسِ عَلَيْهَا وَالصَّلَاةِ إِلَيْهَا
Chapter on the prohibition of building over graves, designating them, sitting on them, and praying towards them
Hadith 3272
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَنْهَى أَنْ يُقْعَدَ عَلَى الْقَبْرِ وَأَنْ يُقَصَّصَ أَوْ يُنْبَى عَلَيْهِ
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbidding sitting on the grave, plastering it with lime, and constructing a building over it.
Hadith 3273
عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يُبْنَى عَلَى الْقَبْرِ وَأَنْ يُجَصَّصَ
Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) forbade building structures over graves and plastering them with lime.
Hadith 3274
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَرْفَعُهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((لَأَنْ يَجْلِسَ أَحَدُكُمْ عَلَى جَمْرَةٍ فَتُحْرِقَ ثِيَابَهُ حَتَّى تُفْضِيَ إِلَى جِلْدِهِ خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَجْلِسَ عَلَى قَبْرٍ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ) خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ يَطَأَ عَلَى قَبْرِ رَجُلٍ مُسْلِمٍ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If any one of you were to sit on burning coals that burn his clothes and reach his skin, that would be better for him than sitting on a grave. In another narration: That would be better for him than trampling on a Muslim's grave.
Hadith 3275
عَنْ أَبِي مَرْثَدٍ الْغَنَوِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((لَا تُصَلُّوا إِلَى القُبُورِ وَلَا تَجْلِسُوا عَلَيْهَا (وَفِي لَفْظٍ) لَا تَجْلِسُوا عَلَى القُبُورِ وَلَا تُصَلُّوا عَلَيْهَا))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Marthad Ghanawi, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do not pray facing towards graves, nor sit upon them. In another narration it is stated: Do not sit upon graves, nor pray upon them.
Hadith 3276
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عَمْرَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((كَسْرُ عَظْمِ الْمَيِّتِ كَكَسْرِهِ وَهُوَ حَيٌّ))، قَالَ: يَرَوْنَ أَنَّهُ فِي الْإِثْمِ، قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَطْنَنْتُهُ قَوْلَ دَاوُدَ
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Breaking the bone of a deceased person is just like breaking the bone of a living person. The scholars are of the opinion that (this hadith pertains to the sin of breaking the bone), and Abdur Razzaq said: I think this is the statement of Dawood bin Qais.
Hadith 3277
(وَعَنْهَا مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِنَّ كَسْرَ عَظْمِ الْمُؤْمِنِ مَيِّتًا مِثْلُ كَسْرِهِ حَيًّا))
(Second chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Breaking the bone of a deceased believer is just like breaking it during his lifetime.
Hadith 3278
عَنْ بَشِيرِ بْنِ الْخَصَاصِيَةِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، بَشِيرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ أُمَاشِي رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ آخِذًا بِيَدِهِ فَقَالَ لِي: ((يَا ابْنَ الْخَصَاصِيَةِ! مَا أَصْبَحْتَ تَنْقِمُ عَلَى اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى، أَصْبَحْتَ تُمَاشِي رَسُولَهُ))، قَالَ أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ آخِذًا بِيَدِهِ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: مَا أَصْبَحْتُ أَنْقِمُ عَلَى اللَّهِ شَيْئًا، قَدْ أَعْطَانِي اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى كُلَّ خَيْرٍ، قَالَ: فَأَتَيْنَا عَلَى قُبُورِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، فَقَالَ: لَقَدْ سَبَقَ هَؤُلَاءِ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا)) ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، ثُمَّ أَتَيْنَا عَلَى قُبُورِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَقَالَ: ((لَقَدْ أَدْرَكَ هَؤُلَاءِ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا)) ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ يَقُولُهَا، قَالَ: فَبَصُرَ بِرَجُلٍ يَمْشِي بَيْنَ الْمَقَابِرِ فِي نَعْلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: ((وَيْحَكَ، يَا صَاحِبَ السِّبْتِيَّتَيْنِ! أَلْقِ سِبْتِيَّتَيْكَ)) مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا، فَنَظَرَ الرَّجُلُ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَلَعَ نَعْلَيْهِ
Sayyiduna Basheer bin Khasasah (may Allah be pleased with him), whose name was given by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as Basheer, narrates: He says, I was walking holding the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), accompanying him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: O son of Khasasiyah! Do you find fault with anything concerning Allah Almighty, while you are walking with His Messenger and have even held his hand? I said: How could I find fault with anything concerning Allah Almighty, when He has granted me every kind of goodness? Meanwhile, we reached the graves of the polytheists. Upon seeing them, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These people have gone ahead (leaving behind) great goodness. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times. After that, we reached the graves of the Muslims. Upon seeing them, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: These people have attained much goodness (by accepting Islam). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man walking among the graves with shoes on and said to him: O wearer of Sabti shoes! You will be ruined! Take off your shoes. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said this two or three times. When that man saw and his gaze fell upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he took off his shoes.
Hadith 3279
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا وَكِيعٌ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ سُفْيَانَ يَرْفَعُهُ، قَالَ: ((إِنَّ الْمَيِّتَ لَيَسْمَعُ خَفْقَ نَعَالِهِمْ، إِذَا وَلَّوْا عَنْهُ مُدْبِرِينَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When people return after burying the deceased, the deceased hears the sound of their shoes.
Hadith 3280
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ إِذَا وَضِعَ فِي قَبْرِهِ وَتَوَلَّى عَنْهُ أَصْحَابُهُ حَتَّى إِنَّهُ لَيَسْمَعُ قَرْعَ نَعَالِهِمْ أَتَاهُ مَلَكَانِ فَيُقْعِدَانِهِ … )) الْحَدِيثَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When a servant is placed in the grave and his friends leave him and return, he hears the sound of their sandals. Then two angels come to him and make him sit up... .
