أبواب صلاة الجنازةChapters on Funeral Prayer
مِنْ أَيْنَ يُدْخَلُ الْمَيِّتُ قَبْرَهُ وَمَا يُقَالُ عِنْدَ ذَالِكَ وَمَنْ يُدْخِلُهُ ، وَمَا جَاءَ فِي الْحَشْيِ فِي الْقَبْرِ وَانْتِظَارِ الْفَرَاغِ مِنَ الدَّفْنِ
From where the deceased is entered into his grave, what is said at that time, who enters him, what is reported regarding filling the grave, and waiting until burial is finished
Hadith 3257
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: لَمَّا وَضِعَتْ أُمُّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فِي الْقَبْرِ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: {مِنْهَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ وَفِيهَا نُعِيدُكُمْ وَمِنْهَا نُخْرِجُكُمْ تَارَةً أُخْرَى}، قَالَ: ثُمَّ لَا أَدْرِي أَقَالَ بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ، وَفِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ، وَعَلَى مِلَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أَمْ لَا، فَلَمَّا بُنِيَ عَلَيْهَا لَحْدُهَا طَفِقَ يَطْرَحُ إِلَيْهِمُ الْجَبُوبَ، وَيَقُولُ: ((سُدُّوا خِلَالَ اللَّبِنِ))، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ((أَمَا إِنَّ هَذَا لَيْسَ بِشَيْءٍ وَلَكِنَّهُ يَطِيبُ بِنَفْسِ الْحَيِّ))
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), was placed in the grave, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse {مِنْہَا خَلَقْنَاکُمْ … … تَارَۃً أُخْرٰی} (Surah Ta-Ha, 55) (We created you from it (the earth), and into it We shall return you, and from it We shall bring you forth once more). Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I do not know whether after this the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this supplication or not: BISMILLAH, WA FI SABILILLAH, WA ‘ALA MILLATI RASULILLAH. (With the name of Allah, in the way of Allah, and according to the way of the Messenger of Allah, we bury). When the grave was sealed with bricks, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threw some clay towards the people and said: Fill the gaps between the bricks with this. Then he said: This is not something necessary, but it just gives some comfort to the living.
Hadith 3258
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((إِذَا وَضَعْتُمْ مَوْتَاكُمْ فِي الْقَبْرِ، فَقُولُوا: بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى مِلَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you lower your deceased into the grave, recite this supplication: بِاسْمِ اللّٰہِ وَعَلٰی مِلَّۃِ رَسُوْلِ اللّٰہِ (In the name of Allah and upon the way of the Messenger of Allah).
Hadith 3259
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ أَنَا خَالِدٌ عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ أَنَّ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ شَهِدَ جَنَازَةَ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ، قَالَ: فَأَظْهَرُوا الْاسْتِغْفَارَ، فَلَمْ يُنْكِرْ ذَلِكَ أَنَسٌ، قَالَ هُشَيْمٌ: قَالَ خَالِدٌ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: وَأَدْخَلُوهُ مِنْ قِبَلِ رِجْلِ الْقَبْرِ، وَقَالَ هُشَيْمٌ مَرَّةً: إِنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ مَاتَ بِالْبَصْرَةِ فَشَهِدَهُ أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ فَأَظْهَرُوا لَهُ الْاسْتِغْفَارَ
Ibn Sirin says that Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) attended the funeral of an Ansari man. The people prayed for forgiveness for him in a loud voice, and Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) did not object to them. Khalid, the narrator, while relating this hadith, said: They lowered the deceased into the grave from the side of the feet. And Hisham, the narrator, once narrated this hadith as follows: An Ansari man passed away in Basra, and Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) also attended his funeral. The people prayed for forgiveness for the deceased in a loud voice.
Hadith 3260
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: شَهِدْنَا ابْنَةً لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَالِسٌ عَلَى الْقَبْرِ، فَرَأَيْتُ عَيْنَيْهِ تَدْمَعَانِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ((هَلْ مِنْكُمْ مِنْ رَجُلٍ لَمْ يُقَارِفِ اللَّيْلَةَ؟))، قَالَ سُرَيْجٌ: يَعْنِي: ذَنْبًا، فَقَالَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ: أَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! قَالَ: ((فَانْزِلْ))، قَالَ: فَنَزَلَ فِي قَبْرِهَا
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were present at the funeral of one of the daughters of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting by the grave, and I saw that tears were flowing from his eyes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Is there anyone among you who has not had intercourse (with his wife) this night? Suraij said: Its meaning is sin. Sayyiduna Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I am (that person). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then you go down (into the grave). So he went down into her grave.
Hadith 3261
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا أَنَّ رُقَيَّةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا لَمَّا مَاتَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَا يَدْخُلُ الْقَبْرَ رَجُلٌ قَارَفَ أَهْلَهُ))، فَلَمْ يَدْخُلْ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ الْقَبْرَ
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyida Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever has had intercourse with his wife tonight should not enter the grave. Thus, Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) did not enter the grave.
Hadith 3262
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((مَنْ تَبِعَ جَنَازَةً فَحَمَلَ مِنْ عُلُوِّهَا، وَحَثَا فِي قَبْرِهَا، وَقَعَدْ حَتَّى يُؤْذَنَ لَهُ أَوْ بِقِيرَاطَيْنِ مِنَ الْأَجْرِ، كُلُّ قِيرَاطٍ مِثْلُ أُحُدٍ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever accompanies the bier of the deceased from the time it is lifted, and remains with it, and also throws earth into the grave, and stays until he is permitted to return after the burial, then he returns with the reward of two qirats, and each qirat is equal to the mountain of Uhud.
