اخْتِيَارُ اللَّحْدِ عَلَى الشَّقِّ وَتَعْمِيقِ الْقَبْرِ وَتَوْسِيعِهِ وَدَفْنِ الْاثْنَيْنِ وَالثَّلَاثَةِ فِي قَبْرٍ وَاحِدٍ إِذَا اقْتَضَى الْحَالُ ذَالِكَ
Preferring the niche grave over the trench, deepening and widening the grave, and burying two or three in one grave if necessary

عَنْ جَرِيرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَجَلِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا جَاءَ فَدَخَلَ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ، فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُعَلِّمُهُ الْإِسْلَامَ وَهُوَ فِي مَسِيرِهِ فَدَخَلَ خُفُّ بَعِيرِهِ فِي جُحْرِ يَرْبُوعٍ فَوَقَصَهُ بَعِيرُهُ فَمَاتَ، فَأَتَى عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: ((عَمِلَ قَلِيلًا وَأُجِرَ كَثِيرًا، قَالَهَا حَمَّادٌ، ثَلَاثًا، اللَّحْدُ لَنَا وَالشَّقُّ لِغَيْرِنَا))
Sayyiduna Jarir bin Abdullah Bajali رضي الله عنه narrates that a man came and accepted Islam. During a journey, the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم kept teaching him about Islam. While walking, his camel’s foot fell into the hole of a certain kind of small mouse, because of which he fell from the camel and died. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم came to his body and said: He did little deeds, but received great reward.)) The narrator Hammad repeated this sentence three times. Then the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said: The lahd (side niche grave) is for us, and the shaqq (simple trench grave) is for others.
Hadith 3251
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) بِنَحْوِهِ وَفِيهِ: فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى جَلَسَ عَلَى شَفِيرِ الْقَبْرِ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ: ((الْحَدُوا، وَلَا تَشُقُّوا، فَإِنَّ اللَّحْدَ لَنَا وَالشَّقَّ لِغَيْرِنَا))
(Second chain of narration) It is stated in this: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came and sat by the edge of the grave and said: Make a side niche (lahd) in the grave, do not make a trench (shaqq), for the niche is for us and the trench is for others.
Hadith 3252
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَالِثٍ) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((اللَّحْدُ لَنَا وَالشَّقُّ لِأَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ))
(The third chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The lahd (niche grave) is for us, and the shaqq (simple trench grave) is for the People of the Book.
Hadith 3253
عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: جَاءَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! أَصَابَنَا قَرْحٌ وَجَهْدٌ، فَكَيْفَ تَأْمُرُنَا؟ قَالَ: ((احْفِرُوا وَأَوْسِعُوا (زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ: وَأَعْمِقُوا) وَاجْعَلُوا الرَّجُلَيْنِ وَالثَّلَاثَةَ فِي الْقَبْرِ))، قَالُوا: فَأَيُّهُمْ نُقَدِّمُ؟ قَالَ: ((أَكْثَرَهُمْ قُرْآنًا))، قَالَ: فَقُدِّمَ أَبِي عَامِرٍ بَيْنَ يَدَي رَجُلٍ أَوْ اثْنَيْنِ
Sayyiduna Hisham bin ‘Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: On the day of the Battle of Uhud, the Ansari Companions came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! We are very wounded and tired, (now regarding the burial of these martyrs) what do you command us? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Dig graves and make them wide and deep, and bury two or three men in each grave. They asked: Whom should we put forward among them? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The one who knows more Qur’an. Hisham says: Thus, my father ‘Amir was placed ahead of one or two men.
Hadith 3254
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ: قُتِلَ أَبِي يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((احْفِرُوا وَأَوْسِعُوا وَأَحْسِنُوا، وَادْفِنُوا الاثْنَيْنِ وَالثَّلَاثَةَ فِي الْقَبْرِ، وَقَدِّمُوا أَكْثَرَهُمْ قُرْآنًا (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ أَكْثَرَهُمْ أَخَذًا لِلْقُرْآنِ) وَكَانَ أَبِي ثَالِثَ ثَلَاثَةٍ وَكَانَ أَكْثَرَهُمْ قُرْآنًا فَقُدِّمَ))
(Second Chain) Sayyiduna Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) says: My father was martyred on the day of the Battle of Uhud. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Dig graves, make them spacious, and make them well, and bury two or three individuals in each grave, and the one who has memorized more of the Qur'an, place him towards the front. My father was the third among three individuals; since he had memorized more of the Qur'an, he was placed ahead.
Hadith 3255
عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ كُلَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي جَنَازَةِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ، وَأَنَا غُلامٌ مَعَ أَبِي فَجَلَسَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى حَفِيرَةِ الْقَبْرِ فَجَعَلَ يُوصِي الْحَافِرَ وَيَقُولُ: ((أَوْسِعْ مِنْ قِبَلِ الرَّأْسِ وَأَوْسِعْ مِنْ قِبَلِ الرِّجْلَيْنِ، لَرُبَّ عِذْقٍ لَهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ))
An Ansari companion narrates: We went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, for the funeral of an Ansari. I was a small boy and had gone with my father. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sat near the grave’s pit and said to the one making the grave: Open the grave from the head side, make it wide from the feet side, for there are many clusters of dates for this deceased in Paradise.
Hadith 3256
عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: الْحَدُوا لِي لَحْدًا وَانْصِبُوا عَلَيَّ اللَّبِنَ نَصْبًا كَمَا صُنِعَ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Make a lahd (niche) for me and place unbaked bricks over me in the same manner as was done with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
