فَصْلٌ مِنْهُ فِي الْقِيَامِ لِجَنَازَةِ الْكَافِرِ
Section on standing for the funeral of a disbeliever
Hadith 3223
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! تَمُرُّ بِنَا جَنَازَةُ الْكَافِرِ أَفَنَقُومُ لَهَا؟ قَالَ: ((نَعَمْ، قُومُوا لَهَا، فَإِنَّكُمْ لَسْتُمْ تَقُومُونَ لَهَا إِنَّمَا تَقُومُونَ إِعْظَامًا لِلَّذِي يَقْبِضُ النُّفُوسَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah! When the funeral of a disbeliever passes by us, should we stand up for it?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! Stand up for it, for indeed you do not stand for it (the deceased), but rather you stand in reverence of the One who seizes the souls."
Hadith 3224
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: قَامَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِجَنَازَةٍ مَرَّتْ بِهِ حَتَّى تَوَارَتْ، قَالَ: فَأَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ أَيْضًا أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: قَامَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَصْحَابُهُ لِجَنَازَةِ يَهُودِيٍّ حَتَّى تَوَارَتْ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a funeral passed by the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up for it until it disappeared from sight. Abu Zubair also narrated to me that Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions stood up for the funeral of a Jew until it disappeared from sight.
Hadith 3225
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: مَرَّتْ بِنَا جَنَازَةٌ فَقَامَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقُمْنَا مَعَهُ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّهَا جَنَازَةُ يَهُودِيٍّ، قَالَ: ((إِنَّ الْمَوْتَ فَزَعٌ، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْجَنَازَةَ فَقُومُوا))
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: A funeral passed by us, and upon seeing it, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and we stood up. I said: O Messenger of Allah! This is the funeral of a Jew. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, death is a distressing event, so whenever you see a funeral, stand up.
Hadith 3226
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ: كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَمَرَّتْ بِنَا جَنَازَةٌ، فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَعَهُ فَذَهَبْنَا لِنَحْمِلَهَا إِذَا هِيَ جَنَازَةُ يَهُودِيَّةٍ، فَقُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّهَا جَنَازَةُ يَهُودِيَّةٍ، قَالَ: ((إِنَّ لِلْمَوْتِ فَزَعًا، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْجَنَازَةَ فَقُومُوا لَهَا))
(Second Chain) Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when a funeral passed by us. Upon seeing it, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, and we also started to walk to carry it. But suddenly it became known that it was the funeral of a Jewish woman. When we informed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that it was the funeral of a Jewish woman, he said: Indeed, there is panic in death, so you should stand up when you see a funeral.
Hadith 3227
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: مُرَّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِجَنَازَةٍ فَقَالَ: ((قُومُوا، فَإِنَّ لِلْمَوْتِ فَزَعًا))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, who says that a funeral passed by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Stand up, indeed death has a distress.
Hadith 3228
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّتْ بِهِ جَنَازَةُ يَهُودِيٍّ، فَقَامَ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّهَا جَنَازَةُ يَهُودِيٍّ، فَقَالَ: ((إِنَّ لِلْمَوْتِ فَزَعًا))
(Second chain) A Jewish funeral procession passed by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He stood up. Someone said: O Messenger of Allah! This is a Jewish funeral. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Indeed, there is a dread in death.
Hadith 3229
عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى أَنَّ سَهْلَ بْنَ حُنَيْفٍ وَقَيْسَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا كَانَا قَاعِدَيْنِ بِالْقَادِسِيَّةِ، فَمَرَّا بِجَنَازَةٍ، فَقَامَا، فَقِيلَ: إِنَّمَا هُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ، فَقَالَا: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّ عَلَيْهِ بِجَنَازَةٍ فَقَامَ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: إِنَّهُ يَهُودِيٌّ، فَقَالَ: ((أَلَيْسَتْ نَفْسًا؟))
Ibn Abi Layla narrates: Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunaif and Sayyiduna Qais bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with them both) were sitting at the place of Qadisiyyah when people passed by carrying a funeral bier. Both of them stood up. Someone said to them: "He was from among the dhimmi people." They replied: "People passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) carrying a funeral bier, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up for it. Someone said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): 'He was a Jew.' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Is it not a soul?'"
Hadith 3230
عَنْ خَارِجَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ عَنْ عَمِّهِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ جَالِسًا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي أَصْحَابِهِ فَطَلَعَتْ جَنَازَةٌ، فَلَمَّا رَآهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثَارَ وَثَارَ أَصْحَابُهُ مَعَهُ، فَلَمْ يَزَالُوا قِيَامًا حَتَّى نَفَذَتْ، قَالَ: وَاللَّهِ! مَا أَدْرِي مِنْ تَأْذٍ بِهَا، أَوْ مِنْ تَضَايُقِ الْمَكَانِ، وَلَا أَحْسَبُهَا إِلَّا يَهُودِيًّا أَوْ يَهُودِيَّةً، وَمَا سَأَلْنَا عَنْ قِيَامِهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Sayyiduna Yazid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he said: I was sitting with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was present among his companions, when suddenly a funeral appeared. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it, he (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions quickly stood up and remained standing until it had passed. By Allah! I could not ascertain whether he stood up due to the discomfort of its (odor) or because of the narrowness of the place, while I think that the funeral was of a Jewish man or woman. In any case, we did not ask the reason for your (peace and blessings be upon him) standing.
