أبواب صلاة الجنازةChapters on Funeral Prayer
بَابُ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ جَنَازَةً فَلَا يَجْلِسُ حَتَّى تُوضَعَ وَمَا جَاءَ فِي الْقِيَامِ لِلْجَنَازَةِ إِذَا مَرَّتْ
Chapter on one who follows a funeral should not sit until it is placed, and what is reported regarding standing for the funeral when it passes
Hadith 3216
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْجَنَازَةَ فَقُومُوا لَهَا، فَمَنِ اتَّبَعَهَا فَلَا يَقْعُدْ حَتَّى تُوَضَعَ))
Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you see a funeral procession, stand up for it, and whoever accompanies the funeral should not sit down until it has been placed (on the ground).
Hadith 3217
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَى جَنَازَةٍ فَلَمْ يَمْشِ مَعَهَا فَلْيَقُمْ حَتَّى تَغِيبَ عَنْهُ، وَمَنْ مَشَى مَعَهَا فَلَا يَجْلِسْ حَتَّى تُوَضَعَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever offers the funeral prayer but does not accompany the deceased for burial should remain standing until the deceased is out of sight. And whoever accompanies the deceased should not sit until the body is placed on the ground.
Hadith 3218
عَنْ عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ رَأَى جَنَازَةً فَقَامَ إِلَيْهَا وَقَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأَى جَنَازَةً فَقَامَ لَهَا
Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up upon seeing a funeral procession and said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stand up upon seeing a funeral procession.
Hadith 3219
عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((إِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمُ الْجَنَازَةَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ مَاشِيًا مَعَهَا فَلْيَقُمْ حَتَّى تُجَاوِزَهُ أَوْ تُوَضَعَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you sees a funeral procession, and he is not accompanying it, he should stand until it passes by him or it is placed down.
Hadith 3220
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِذَا رَأَيْتَ جَنَازَةً فَقُمْ حَتَّى تُجَاوِزَكَ أَوْ قَالَ قِفْ حَتَّى تُجَاوِزَكَ))
(Second chain) The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When you see a funeral procession, stand until it has passed ahead of you.
Hadith 3221
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا يَحْيَى وَوَكِيعٌ عَنْ زَكَرِيَّا حَدَّثَنِي عَامِرٌ قَالَ كَانَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ وَمَرْوَانُ جَالِسَيْنِ فَمُرَّ عَلَيْهِمَا بِجَنَازَةٍ فَقَامَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ فَقَالَ مَرْوَانُ: اجْلِسْ، فَقَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ: رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَامَ، فَقَامَ مَرْوَانُ، وَقَالَ وَكِيعٌ مَرَّتْ بِهِ جَنَازَةٌ فَقَامَ
Aamir says: Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and Marwan were sitting when a funeral procession passed by them. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up. Marwan said to him: Remain seated. He replied: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stand up (for the funeral). Upon hearing this, Marwan also stood up.
Hadith 3222
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا وَكِيعٌ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي ذَئْبٍ عَنِ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ جَالِسًا مَعَ مَرْوَانَ، فَمَرَّتْ جَنَازَةٌ فَمَرَّ بِهِ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ فَقَالَ: قُمْ أَيُّهَا الْأَمِيرُ! فَقَدْ عَلِمَ هَذَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا تَبِعَ جَنَازَةً لَمْ يَجْلِسْ حَتَّى تُوَضَعَ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting with Marwan when a funeral procession passed by. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) also passed by and said: O Amir! Stand up. (Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him) knows that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not sit when accompanying a funeral until it was placed on the ground.
