بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي حَمْلِ الْجَنَازَةِ وَالْإِسْرَاعِ بِهَا مِنْ غَيْرِ رَمَلٍ
Chapter on what is reported regarding carrying the funeral and hastening with it without running
Hadith 3193
عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِذَا وَضِعَتِ الْجَنَازَةُ، وَاحْتَمَلَهَا الرِّجَالُ عَلَى أَعْنَاقِهِمْ، فَإِنْ كَانَتْ صَالِحَةً قَالَتْ قَدِّمُونِي، وَإِنْ كَانَتْ غَيْرَ صَالِحَةٍ قَالَتْ يَا وَيْلَهَا، أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ بِهَا يَسْمَعُ صَوْتَهَا كُلُّ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا الْإِنْسَانَ، وَلَوْ سَمِعَهَا الْإِنْسَانُ لَصَعِقَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When the deceased is placed on the bier and men lift it onto their shoulders, if the deceased was righteous, it says: "Take me forward," and if it was not righteous, it says: "Alas! Where are you taking me?" Every creature except humans hears its voice, and if humans were to hear it, they would fall unconscious.
Hadith 3194
عَنْ عَطَاءٍ قَالَ: حَضَرْنَا مَعَ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ جَنَازَةَ مَيْمُونَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا بِسَرِفَ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: هَذِهِ مَيْمُونَةُ، إِذَا رَفَعْتُمْ نَعْشَهَا فَلَا تُزَعْزِعُوهَا وَلَا تُزَلْزِلُوهَا
Ata says: We were at the place of Sarf with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) attending the funeral of the wife of the Messenger, Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). He said: This is Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). When you lift her body, do not move it with force or harshness.
Hadith 3195
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَأَلْنَا نَبِيَّنَا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ السَّيْرِ بِالْجَنَازَةِ، فَقَالَ: السَّيْرُ مَا دُونَ الْخَبَبِ، فَإِنْ يَكُ خَيْرًا يُعَجَّلْ إِلَيْهِ أَوْ تُعَجَّلْ إِلَيْهِ، وَإِنْ يَكَ سِوَى ذَلِكَ فَبُعْدًا لِأَهْلِ النَّارِ، الْجَنَازَةُ مَطْبُوعَةٌ وَلَا تَتْبَعُ، لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ تَقَدَّمَهَا
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the manner of carrying the funeral procession. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It should be carried quickly, but not run with. If the deceased was righteous, he will quickly reach goodness, and if he was not righteous, then destruction is for the people of the Fire. Walk behind the funeral, do not make it follow behind you. Whoever walks ahead of the funeral is not from among us.
Hadith 3196
عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ حِينَ حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ: لَا تَضْرِبُوا عَلَيَّ فُسْطَاطًا، وَلَا تَتْبَعُونِي بِمِجْمَرٍ، وَأَسْرِعُوا بِي، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((إِذَا وَضِعَ الرَّجُلُ الصَّالِحُ عَلَى سَرِيرِهِ قَالَ قَدِّمُونِي قَدِّمُونِي، وَإِذَا وَضِعَ الرَّجُلُ السُّوءُ عَلَى سَرِيرِهِ قَالَ يَا وَيْلَهُ أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ بِي))
Abdur Rahman bin Mehran says: When the time of death of Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) approached, he said: Do not set up any tent over me, and do not take incense burners with my funeral, and hasten regarding me, because I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: When a righteous man is placed on the bier, he says: Take me quickly, take me quickly, but when a sinful servant is placed on the bier, he says: Alas! Where are you taking me?
Hadith 3197
عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: لَا أَعْلَمُ إِلَّا رَفَعَ الْحَدِيثَ، قَالَ: ((أَسْرِعُوا بِجَنَائِزِكُمْ، فَإِنْ كَانَتْ صَالِحَةً عَجَّلْتُمُوهَا إِلَى الْخَيْرِ، وَإِنْ كَانَتْ طَالِحَةً اسْتَرَحْتُمْ مِنْهَا وَوَضَعْتُمُوهَا عَنْ رِقَابِكُمْ))
Ibn al-Musayyib says that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, the narrator says: I think he narrated it as a marfu’ hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Hasten with your funerals; if the deceased was righteous, you are taking him quickly towards goodness, and if he was evil, then you will quickly be relieved of him and will remove him from your shoulders.
Hadith 3198
عَنْ عُيَيْنَةَ ثَنَا أَبِي قَالَ: خَرَجْتُ فِي جَنَازَةِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ، قَالَ: فَجَعَلَ رِجَالٌ مِنْ أَهْلِهِ يَسْتَقْبِلُونَ الْجَنَازَةَ فَيَمْشُونَ عَلَى أَعْقَابِهِمْ، وَيَقُولُونَ رُوَيْدًا بَارَكَ اللَّهُ فِيكُمْ، قَالَ: فَلَحِقَنَا أَبُو بَكْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقِ الْمِرْبَدِ فَلَمَّا رَأَى أَوْلَئِكَ وَمَا يَصْنَعُونَ حَمَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِبَغْلَتِهِ، وَأَهْوَى لَهُمْ بِالسَّوْطِ وَقَالَ: خَلُّوا، فَوَالَّذِي كَرَّمَ وَجْهَ أَبِي قَاسِمٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَإِنَّا لَنَكَادُ أَنْ نَرْمُلَ بِهَا
‘Uyainah’s father, ‘Abdur Rahman bin Joshan, says: I went out with the funeral of ‘Abdur Rahman bin Samurah and saw that some members of his household were walking ahead of the funeral backwards, saying: (People!) May Allah bless you, walk calmly. Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) met us from the direction of the Mirbad road. When he saw these people doing this, he drove his mule towards them and waved his stick at them and said: Move away. By the One Who honored the face of Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him)! I saw people with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in this matter, and it was almost that we would start running.
Hadith 3199
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا تَبِعَ جَنَازَةً، قَالَ: ((انْبَسِطُوا بِهَا وَلَا تَدِبُّوا دَبِيبَ الْيَهُودِ بِجَنَائِزِهَا))
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would go with a funeral, he would say: Carry it quickly and do not carry the funeral slowly like the Jews.
Hadith 3200
عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ (أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) قَالَ: إِنَّ أُنَاسًا مَرُّوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِجَنَازَةٍ يُسْرِعُونَ بِهَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لِتَكُنْ عَلَيْكُمْ السَّكِينَةُ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari, may Allah be pleased with him, who says: Some people passed by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, carrying a funeral procession with great haste. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: You should have tranquility.
Hadith 3201
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: مَرَّتْ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَنَازَةٌ تُمْخَضُ مَخْضَ الزِّقِّ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((عَلَيْكُمُ الْقَصْدَ))
(Second chain) Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) says: A funeral passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), it was shaking like a water-skin. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Maintain moderation.
