بَابُ الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى الْقَبْرِ بَعْدَ الدَّفْنِ
Chapter on praying at the grave after burial
Hadith 3168
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ثَنَا ثَابِتٌ، عَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ إِنْسَانًا كَانَ يَقُمُّ الْمَسْجِدَ أَسْوَدَ، مَاتَ أَوْ مَاتَتْ، فَفَقَدَهَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: ((مَا فَعَلَ الْإِنْسَانُ الَّذِي كَانَ يَقُمُّ الْمَسْجِدَ؟))، قَالَ: فَقِيلَ لَهُ: مَاتَ، قَالَ: ((فَهَلَّا أَذِنْتُمُونِي بِهِ؟))، فَقَالُوا: بِأَنَّهُ كَانَ لَيْلًا، قَالَ: ((فَدُلُّونِي عَلَى قَبْرِهَا))، قَالَ: فَأَتَى الْقَبْرَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا، قَالَ ثَابِتٌ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ أَوْ فِي حَدِيثٍ آخَرَ: ((إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْقُبُورَ مَمْلُوءَةٌ ظُلْمَةً عَلَى أَهْلِهَا، وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُنَوِّرُهَا بِصَلَاتِي عَلَيْهِمْ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that there was a black man or woman who used to sweep the mosque. He/she passed away. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not see him/her, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What happened to the one who used to clean the mosque? Someone said: He/she has passed away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Why did you not inform me? The companions said: It happened at night. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Guide me to his/her grave. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to the grave and performed the funeral prayer. The narrator of this hadith, Thabit, while narrating this or another hadith, said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, these graves are filled with darkness, and because of my prayer, Allah Almighty has illuminated them.
Hadith 3169
عَنْ أَنَسِ (بْنِ مَالِكِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) أَنَّ أَسْوَدَ كَانَ يُنَظِّفُ الْمَسْجِدَ، فَدُفِنَ لَيْلًا وَأَتَى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأُخْبِرَ فَقَالَ: ((انْطَلِقُوا إِلَى قَبْرِهِ))، فَانْطَلَقُوا إِلَى قَبْرِهِ، فَقَالَ: ((إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْقُبُورَ مُمْتَلِئَةٌ عَلَى أَهْلِهَا ظُلْمَةً، وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُنَوِّرُهَا بِصَلَاتِي عَلَيْهَا))، فَأَتَى الْقَبْرَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ، وَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّ أَخِي مَاتَ وَلَمْ تُصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ، قَالَ: فَأَيْنَ قَبْرُهُ؟ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَانْطَلَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَعَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that there was a black man who used to clean the mosque. He passed away at night and was buried during the night. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, he was informed about this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let us go to his grave. These graves are filled with darkness, and Allah Almighty illuminates them for their inhabitants because of my prayer over them." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to his grave and performed his funeral prayer. An Ansari companion said: "O Messenger of Allah! My brother had passed away and you did not perform his funeral prayer." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Where is his grave?" He informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went there with him.
Hadith 3170
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى عَلَى قَبْرِ امْرَأَةٍ قَدْ دُفِنَتْ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer at the grave of a woman who had been buried.
Hadith 3171
عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمَّا وَرَدْنَا الْبَقِيعَ إِذَا هُوَ بِقَبْرٍ جَدِيدٍ، فَسَأَلَ عَنْهُ، فَقِيلَ فُلَانَةٌ، فَعَرَفَهَا، فَقَالَ: ((أَلَا أَذِنْتُمُونِي بِهَا؟))، قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! كُنْتَ قَائِلًا صَائِمًا فَكَرِهْنَا أَنْ نُؤْذِنَكَ، فَقَالَ: ((لَا يَمُوتَنَّ فِيكُمْ مَيِّتٌ مَا كُنْتُ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِكُمْ إِلَّا أَذِنْتُمُونِي بِهِ فَإِنَّ صَلَاتِي عَلَيْهِ لَهُ رَحْمَةٌ؟))، قَالَ: ثُمَّ أَتَى الْقَبْرَ فَصَفَّنَا خَلْفَهُ وَكَبَّرَ عَلَيْهَا أَرْبَعًا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Yazid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and when we reached Baqi', the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a new grave there and inquired about it. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed that it was the grave of such-and-such woman, he recognized her and then asked: Why did you not inform me about her? The companions said: O Messenger of Allah! You were fasting and resting (taking a siesta), so we did not consider it appropriate to inform you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Do not do so,) whenever any one of you passes away and I am present among you, be sure to inform me, because my offering the funeral prayer for any deceased is a mercy for him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to her grave, made us stand in rows behind him, and said four takbirs.
Hadith 3172
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى عَلَى صَاحِبِ قَبْرٍ بَعْدَ مَا دُفِنَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer for a person in the grave after he had been buried.
Hadith 3173
(وَمِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنْ شُعْبَةَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ سُلَيْمَانَ الشَّيْبَانِيَّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الشَّعْبِيَّ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي مَنْ مَرَّ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى قَبْرٍ مَنْبُوذٍ، فَأَمَّهُمْ وَصَفُّوا خَلْفَهُ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا أَبَا عَمْرٍو! وَمَنْ حَدَّثَكَ؟ قَالَ: ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
(Second Chain) Imam Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: A man informed me who had passed by a solitary grave in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the companions in prayer and they formed rows behind him. Sulaiman Shaybani said: O Abu Amr! Who narrated this incident to you? He said: Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him).
