بَابُ فَضْلِ الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ وَتَشْيِيعِ الْجَنَازَةِ
Chapter on the virtue of praying over the deceased and accompanying the funeral
Hadith 3133
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَى جَنَازَةٍ فَلَهُ قِيرَاطٌ وَمَنِ انْتَظَرَ حَتَّى يُفْرَغَ مِنْهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطَانِ))، قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! وَمَا قِيرَاطَانِ؟ قَالَ: ((مِثْلُ الْجَبَلَيْنِ الْعَظِيمَيْنِ)) (وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَى جَنَازَةٍ فَاتَّبَعَهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطَانِ مِثْلَيْ أُحُدٍ وَمَنْ صَلَّى وَلَمْ يَتَّبِعْهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطٌ مِثْلُ أُحُدٍ، قَالَ ابْنُ بَكْرٍ الْقِيرَاطُ مِثْلُ أُحُدٍ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever offers the funeral prayer for a deceased person will have a reward equal to one qirat, and whoever waits until the burial is completed will have a reward equal to two qirats. The Companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! What are two qirats? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Equal to two great mountains. (Second chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever remains with the deceased after offering the funeral prayer will receive a reward as great as two mountains like Uhud, and whoever returns after offering the prayer and does not remain with the deceased will receive a reward as great as one mountain."
Hadith 3134
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَى جَنَازَةٍ فَلَهُ قِيرَاطٌ))، قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! مِثْلُ قِيرَاطِنَا هَذَا؟ قَالَ: ((لَا، بَلْ مِثْلُ أُحُدٍ أَوْ أَعْظَمُ مِنْ أُحُدٍ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever offers the funeral prayer for a deceased person will receive the reward of one qirat. The companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! Like our qirat? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: No, that qirat is equal to the mountain of Uhud or even greater than that.
Hadith 3135
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((مَنْ تَبِعَ جَنَازَةً حَتَّى يُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهَا فَإِنَّ لَهُ قِيرَاطًا))، فَسُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْقِيرَاطِ، فَقَالَ: ((مِثْلُ أُحُدٍ))
(Second Chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever walks with a funeral procession until the funeral prayer is offered for it, for him is the reward of one qirat. When he, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked about the qirat, he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: It is like the mountain of Uhud.
Hadith 3136
(وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ مَرَّ بِأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَهُوَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: ((مَنْ تَبِعَ جَنَازَةً فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطٌ، فَإِنْ شَهِدَ دَفْنَهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطَانِ، الْقِيرَاطُ أَعْظَمُ مِنْ أُحُدٍ))، فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: أَبَا هُرٍّ! انْظُرْ مَا تُحَدِّثُ بِهِ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ: انْظُرْ مَا تُحَدِّثُ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ! فَإِنَّكَ تُكْثِرُ الْحَدِيثَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ)، فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ حَتَّى انْطَلَقَ بِهِ إِلَى عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا: يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ! أَنْشُدُكِ بِاللَّهِ أَمَا سَمِعْتِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((مَنْ تَبِعَ جَنَازَةً فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطٌ، فَإِنْ شَهِدَ دَفْنَهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطَانِ))؟ قَالَتْ: اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ، فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَشْغَلُنِي عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ غَرْسُ الْوَادِيِّ وَلَا صَفْقٌ بِالْأَسْوَاقِ، إِنِّي إِنَّمَا كُنْتُ أَطْلُبُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَلِمَةً يُعَلِّمُنِيهَا وَأُكْلَةً يُطْعِمُنِيهَا؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ! كُنْتَ أَلْزَمَنَا لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَعْلَمَنَا بِحَدِيثِهِ
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he passed by Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was narrating this hadith: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever accompanies a deceased and offers the funeral prayer will receive the reward of one qirat, and if he stays until the burial, he will receive the reward of two qirats. One qirat is greater than the mountain of Uhud. Upon hearing this hadith, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Abu Hurairah! Be careful about what you are narrating from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). In another narration, he said: Abu Hurairah! Consider carefully what you are narrating from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). You narrate many ahadith from the Messenger of Allah. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) took him to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: O Mother of the Believers! I ask you by Allah, did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that whoever accompanies a deceased and offers the funeral prayer will receive one qirat, and whoever stays until the burial will receive two qirats of reward? She said: Yes, I heard this hadith. Then Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: (The real matter is that) neither farming kept me busy from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), nor trading in the markets. I used to remain in search that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would teach me some word or command and feed me some food. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu Hurairah! Truly, you used to stay with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) more than all of us, and you know the ahadith of the Messenger more than all of us.
Hadith 3137
عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((مَنْ تَبِعَ جَنَازَةً، وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَى جَنَازَةٍ) فَلَهُ قِيرَاطٌ وَمَنْ شَهِدَ دَفْنَهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطَانِ))، قِيلَ: وَمَا الْقِيرَاطَانِ؟ قَالَ: ((أَصْغَرُهُمَا مِثْلُ أُحُدٍ))
Mawla of the Messenger, Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Whoever goes with the deceased and offers the funeral prayer will receive one qirat, and whoever stays until the burial will receive two qirats of reward. Someone asked: What is meant by two qirats? He (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: The smaller qirat is equal to the mountain of Uhud.
Hadith 3138
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَنْ تَبِعَ جَنَازَةً يُصَلِّي عَلَيْهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطٌ، وَمَنِ انْتَظَرَهَا حَتَّى يُفْرَغَ مِنْهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطَانِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever remains with the deceased until the funeral prayer is offered, he will receive one qirat of reward, and whoever waits until the burial is completed, he will receive two qirat of reward.
Hadith 3139
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((مَنْ تَبِعَ جَنَازَةً يَحْمِلُ مِنْ عُلُوِّهَا، وَحَثَا فِي قَبْرِهَا وَقَعَدَ حَتَّى يُؤْذَنَ لَهُ، أَبَى بِقِيرَاطَيْنِ مِنَ الْأَجْرِ، كُلُّ قِيرَاطٍ مِثْلُ أُحُدٍ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever accompanies the bier of the deceased from the time it is lifted, and remains with it, and also throws earth into the grave, and stays until he is permitted to return after the burial, then he returns with the reward of two qirats, and each qirat is equal to the mountain of Uhud.
Hadith 3140
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَنْ جَاءَ جَنَازَةً فِي أَهْلِهَا فَتَبِعَهَا حَتَّى يُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطٌ، وَمَنْ مَضَى مَعَهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطَانِ مِثْلُ أُحُدٍ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever goes to the house of the family of the deceased, then remains with the deceased until the funeral prayer is offered, he will receive one qirat, and whoever remains with (the deceased) until the burial, he will receive the reward of two qirats. (One qirat) is like the mountain of Uhud.
Hadith 3141
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَى جَنَازَةٍ وَشَيَّعَهَا كَانَ لَهُ قِيرَاطَانِ، وَمَنْ صَلَّى عَلَيْهَا وَلَمْ يُشَيِّعْهَا كَانَ لَهُ قِيرَاطٌ، وَالْقِيرَاطُ مِثْلُ أُحُدٍ))
(Second chain) The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever offers the funeral prayer for the deceased and then accompanies it (to the grave) to bid farewell, he will receive the reward of two qirats. And whoever offers the prayer and (returns and) does not stay with it till the end, he will receive one qirat. One qirat is as great as the mountain of Uhud.
Hadith 3142
عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((مَنْ تَبِعَ جَنَازَةً حَتَّى يُصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا وَيُفْرَغَ مِنْهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطَانِ، وَمَنْ تَبِعَ حَتَّى يُصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطٌ، وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ! لَهُوَ أَثْقَلُ فِي مِيزَانِهِ مِنْ أُحُدٍ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever accompanies the deceased (and remains with him) until the funeral prayer and (burial) is completed, he will have the reward of two qirats. And whoever goes with him until the funeral prayer is completed, for him is the reward of one qirat. By the One in whose hand is the life of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! This qirat will be heavier on that person's scale than the mountain of Uhud.
