بَابُ التَّكْفِينِ مِنْ رَأْسِ الْمَالِ وَجَوَازِ تَكْفِينِ الرَّجُلَيْنِ وَالثَّلَاثَةِ فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ وَالِاقْتِصَارِ عَلَى مَا يَسْتُرُ الْعَوْرَةَ إِذَا دَعَتِ الضَّرُورَةُ وَاسْتِحْبَابِ الْمُوَاسَاةِ بِالْكَفَنِ
Chapter on shrouding from the principal wealth, the permissibility of shrouding two or three in one garment, sufficing with what covers the private parts if necessary, and the recommendation of sharing the shroud
Hadith 3120
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَتَى عَلَى حَمْزَةَ فَوَقَفَ عَلَيْهِ فَرَآهُ قَدْ مُثِّلَ بِهِ، فَقَالَ: ((لَوْلَا أَنْ تَجِدَ صَفِيَّةُ فِي نَفْسِهَا لَتَرَكْتُهُ حَتَّى تَأْكُلَهُ الْعَافِيَةُ، وَقَالَ زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ: تَأْكُلُهُ الْعَاهَةُ حَتَّى يُحْشَرَ مِنْ بُطُونِهَا))، قَالَ: ثُمَّ دَعَا بِنَمِرَةٍ، فَكَفَّنَهُ فِيهَا، قَالَ: وَكَانَتْ إِذَا مُدَّتْ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ بَدَتْ قَدَمَاهُ، وَإِذَا مُدَّتْ عَلَى قَدَمَيْهِ بَدَا رَأْسُهُ، قَالَ: وَكَثُرَ الْقَتْلَى وَقَلَّتِ الثِّيَابُ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ يُكَفَّنُ أَوْ يُكَفَّنَ الرَّجُلَانِ شَكَّ صَفْوَانُ، وَالثَّلَاثَةُ فِي الثَّوْبِ الْوَاحِدِ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْأَلُ عَنْ أَكْثَرِهِمْ قُرْآنًا فَيُقَدَّمُهُ إِلَى الْقِبْلَةِ، قَالَ: فَدَفَنَهُمْ رَسُولُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَمْ يُصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ، وَقَالَ زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، فَكَانَ الرَّجُلُ وَالرَّجُلَانِ وَالثَّلَاثَةُ يُكَفَّنُونَ فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and stood by Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) and saw that he had been mutilated. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If Safiyyah would not feel (pain), I would have left him as he was, until the beasts and (carnivorous) birds would eat him and his resurrection would be from their bellies. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a striped sheet and shrouded him in it. That sheet was so short that if the head was covered, the feet would remain uncovered, and if it was placed over the feet, the head would remain uncovered. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would shroud two or three men in one cloth, then ask which of them had memorized more of the Qur'an, and would place him foremost towards the Qiblah (in the grave). In this way, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) buried the martyrs and did not perform their funeral prayer. The narrator, Zayd bin Hubab, said: One, two, and three men were shrouded in a single cloth.
Hadith 3121
عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ (بْنِ الْعَوَّامِ) رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: إِنَّهُ لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ أُحُدٍ أَقْبَلَتْ امْرَأَةٌ تَسْعَى حَتَّى إِذَا كَادَتْ أَنْ تُشْرِفَ عَلَى الْقَتْلَى، قَالَ: فَكَرِهَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ تَرَاهُمْ، فَقَالَ: ((الْمَرْأَةَ الْمَرْأَةَ))، قَالَ الزُّبَيْرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: فَتَوَسَّمْتُ أَنَّهَا أُمِّي صَفِيَّةُ، قَالَ: فَخَرَجْتُ أَسْعَى إِلَيْهَا فَأَدْرَكْتُهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَنْتَهِيَ إِلَى الْقَتْلَى، قَالَ: فَلَدَمَتْ فِي صَدْرِي وَكَانَتْ امْرَأَةً جَلْدَةً، قَالَتْ: إِلَيْكَ، لَا أَرْضَى لَكَ، قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَزَمَ عَلَيْكِ، قَالَ: فَوَقَفَتْ وَأَخْرَجَتْ ثَوْبَيْنِ مَعَهَا فَقَالَتْ: هَذَانِ ثَوْبَانِ جِئْتُ بِهِمَا لِأَخِي حَمْزَةَ فَقَدْ بَلَغَنِي مَقْتَلُهُ فَكَفِّنُوهُ فِيهِمَا، قَالَ: فَجِئْنَا بِالثَّوْبَيْنِ لِنُكَفِّنَ فِيهِمَا حَمْزَةَ فَإِذَا إِلَى جَنْبِهِ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ قَتِيلٌ قَدْ فُعِلَ بِهِ كَمَا فُعِلَ بِحَمْزَةَ، قَالَ: فَوَجَدْنَا غَضَاضَةً وَحَيَاءً أَنْ نُكَفِّنَ حَمْزَةَ فِي ثَوْبَيْنِ وَالْأَنْصَارِيُّ لَا كَفَنَ لَهُ، فَقُلْنَا: لِحَمْزَةَ ثَوْبٌ وَلِلْأَنْصَارِيِّ ثَوْبٌ، فَقَدَرْنَاهُمَا، فَكَانَ أَحَدُهُمَا أَكْبَرَ مِنَ الْآخَرِ فَأَقْرَعْنَا بَيْنَهُمَا، فَكَفَّنَّا كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا فِي الثَّوْبِ الَّذِي طَارَ
Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) says: On the day of Uhud, a woman was running and was about to come and see the martyrs, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked that she should see the martyrs (in that state), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woman, woman, (prevent her from coming to the martyrs)." Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I recognized that she was my mother, Sayyida Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), so I quickly went there and before she could reach the martyrs, I reached her. But since she was a strong woman, she struck my chest and said: "Get away, may you have no place!" But when I said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has ordered you to be stopped, upon hearing this, she stopped. She had two cloths with her, she took them out and said: "These are two cloths, I have brought them for my brother Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him), because I have received news of his martyrdom. Shroud him in these cloths." So we brought those two cloths to shroud Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him), but suddenly we saw that beside him lay an Ansari martyr, who had also been mutilated. We felt it would be inconsiderate and unjust to shroud Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) in two cloths and not have even one cloth for the Ansari. Then we measured both cloths, and since one of them turned out to be larger, we cast lots between the two martyrs, and whichever cloth fell to whichever one, we shrouded him in it.
Hadith 3122
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: كَفَّنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَمْزَةَ فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ، قَالَ جَابِرٌ ذَلِكَ الثَّوْبُ نَمِرَةٌ
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) shrouded Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) in a single cloth, and that cloth was striped.
Hadith 3123
عَنْ خَبَّابِ (بْنِ الْأَرَتِّ) رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: هَاجَرْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَبْتَغِي وَجْهَ اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى فَوَجَبَ أَجْرُنَا عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، فَمِنَّا مَنْ مَضَى لَمْ يَأْكُلْ مِنْ أَجْرِهِ شَيْئًا، مِنْهُمْ مُصْعَبُ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ قُتِلَ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ فَلَمْ نَجِدْ شَيْئًا نُكَفِّنُهُ فِيهِ إِلَّا نَمِرَةً كُنَّا إِذَا غَطَّيْنَا بِهَا رَأْسَهُ خَرَجَتْ رِجْلَاهُ، وَإِذَا غَطَّيْنَا رِجْلَيْهِ خَرَجَ رَأْسُهُ، فَأَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ نُغَطِّيَ بِهَا رَأْسَهُ وَنَجْعَلَ عَلَى رِجْلَيْهِ إِذْخِرًا، وَمِنَّا مَنْ أَيْنَعَتْ لَهُ ثَمَرَتُهُ فَهُوَ يَهْدِي بِهَا يَعْنِي يَجْتَنِيهَا
Sayyiduna Khabbab bin Al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We migrated with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for the pleasure of Allah Almighty, so our reward with Allah became assured (as He has promised). Then among us were some who departed to Allah without having consumed the reward of their deeds; among them was Sayyiduna Mus'ab bin Umair (may Allah be pleased with him), who was martyred on the day of Uhud. For his shroud, we could find only one sheet, and it was so short that when we covered his head, his feet became uncovered, and when we covered his feet, his head became uncovered. Eventually, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to cover his head and to place idhkhir (a type of grass) over his feet. While among us are also those whose fruits have ripened and now he is gathering them.
Hadith 3124
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا أَنَّ حَمْزَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَمْ يُوجَدْ لَهُ كَفَنٌ إِلَّا بُرْدَةٌ مَلْحَاءُ، إِذَا جُعِلَتْ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ قَلَصَتْ عَنْ قَدَمَيْهِ، وَإِذَا جُعِلَتْ عَلَى قَدَمَيْهِ قَلَصَتْ عَنْ رَأْسِهِ حَتَّى مُدَّتْ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ وَجُعِلَ عَلَى قَدَمَيْهِ الإِذْخِرُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) that for the shroud of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him), only a striped sheet could be found, and that (too was so short) that if it was placed over his head, his feet would be uncovered, and if it was placed over his feet, his head would be uncovered. In the end, the sheet was placed over his head and grass (izkhir) was put over his feet.
