بَابُ اسْتِحْبَابِ إِحْسَانِ الْكَفَنِ مِنْ غَيْرِ مُغَالَاةٍ وَاخْتِيَارِ الْأَبْيَضِ
Chapter on the recommendation of a good shroud without extravagance and preferring white
Hadith 3110
Under this chapter, the following sub-chapters and hadiths have been mentioned.
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَطَبَ يَوْمًا فَذَكَرَ رَجُلًا قُبِضَ وَكُفِّنَ فِي كَفَنٍ غَيْرِ طَائِلٍ، وَقُبِرَ لَيْلًا فَزَجَرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يُقْبَرَ بِاللَّيْلِ حَتَّى يُصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا أَنْ يُضْطَرَّ إِنْسَانٌ إِلَى ذَلِكَ، وَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِذَا كَفَّنَ أَحَدُكُمْ أَخَاهُ فَلْيُحَسِّنْ كَفَنَهُ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once delivered a sermon, and mention was made of a man who had passed away and was given only a simple shroud and buried at night. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade burying at night without offering the funeral prayer, except if a person is compelled. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any of you gives a shroud to his brother, he should give a good shroud.
Hadith 3111
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((مَنْ وَجَدَ سَعَةً، فَلْيُكَفِّنْ فِي ثَوْبِ حِبَرَةٍ))
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever has the means should shroud (the deceased) in striped Yemeni cloth.
Hadith 3112
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((الْبَسُوا مِنْ ثِيَابِكُمْ الْبِيَاضَ، فَإِنَّهَا مِنْ خَيْرِ ثِيَابِكُمْ وَكَفِّنُوا فِيهَا مَوْتَاكُمْ، وَإِنَّ مِنْ خَيْرِ أَكْحَالِكُمُ الْإِثْمَدَ، يَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ وَيُنْبِتُ الشَّعْرَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Wear white clothes, for they are among your best clothes, and shroud your dead in them. And among your collyriums, the best is antimony (ithmid); it sharpens the eyesight and causes the eyelashes to grow.
Hadith 3113
عَنْ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ جُنْدُبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((الْبَسُوا مِنْ ثِيَابِكُمُ الْبِيضَ وَكَفِّنُوا فِيهَا مَوْتَاكُمْ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Wear white clothes and shroud your dead in them as well.
