بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الْأِحْدَادِ عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ
Chapter on what is reported regarding mourning for the deceased
Hadith 3089
عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ: ((لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثِ لَيَالٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا))
The wife of the Messenger, Sayyida Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say from the pulpit that it is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for any deceased person for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom the mourning period is four months and ten days.
Hadith 3090
عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَتْ: تُوُفِّيَ حَمِيمٌ لِأُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَدَعَتْ بِصُفْرَةٍ، فَمَسَحَتْ بِذِرَاعَيْهَا وَقَالَتْ: إِنَّمَا أَصْنَعُ هَذَا لِشَيْءٍ سَمِعْتُ (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: لِأَنَّ) رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ مُسْلِمَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجِهَا أَرْبَعَةً وَعَشْرًا))
Sayyida Zaynab bint Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: A relative of Sayyida Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away. She sent for perfume, applied it to her arms, and said: I have done this for a specific reason, and that is because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for any deceased person for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom the mourning period is four months and ten days.
Hadith 3091
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ، إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ))
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for any deceased person for more than three days, except for her husband.
Hadith 3092
وَعَنْ حَفْصَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا مِثْلُهُ (وَزَادَتْ بَعْدَ "إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ": ((فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا))
A similar hadith is narrated from Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), except that after the words "except for a husband," these words are present: So she will observe mourning for him for four months and ten days.
Hadith 3093
عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَا تُحِدَّ الْمَرْأَةُ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا، وَلَا تَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلَّا عَصْبًا، وَلَا تَكْتَحِلُ وَلَا تَمَسُّ طِيبًا إِلَّا عِنْدَ طُهْرِهَا، فَإِذَا طَهُرَتْ مِنْ حَيْضِهَا نُبَذَةً مِنْ قُسْطٍ وَأَظْفَارٍ))
Sayyidah Umm ‘Atiyyah Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No woman should observe mourning for any deceased person for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom she will observe mourning for four months and ten days. During this period, she should not wear dyed clothes, but she may wear clothes made of dyed yarn. She should not apply kohl, nor use perfume, except that when she becomes pure after menstruation, she may use a little qust or azfar perfume.
Hadith 3094
عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ عُمَيْسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْيَوْمَ الثَّالِثَ مِنْ قَتْلِ جَعْفَرٍ، فَقَالَ: ((لَا تُحِدِّي بَعْدَ يَوْمِكِ هَذَا))
Sayyida Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her) says: On the third day after the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me and said: Do not observe mourning after today.
Hadith 3095
(وَعَنْهَا مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَتْ: لَمَّا أُصِيبَ جَعْفَرٌ أَتَانَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: ((قُومِي الْبَسِي ثَوْبَ الْحِدَادِ ثَلَاثًا، ثُمَّ اصْنَعِي مَا شِئْتِ))، قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ بَكَّارٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ مِثْلَهُ
(Second chain) She says: When the tragedy of Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) occurred, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and said, "Get up! Wear mourning clothes for three days, after that do as you wish."
