11 hadith
Hadith 3075
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'oon (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, a woman said: "O Uthman bin Maz'oon! Congratulations to you for Paradise." In another narration, it is mentioned: His wife said: "O son of Maz'oon! Congratulations to you for Paradise." Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at her angrily and said: "How do you know?" She said: "O Messenger of Allah! He was your horseman and companion." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah! I do not know what will be done with me, even though I am the Messenger of Allah." In another narration, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not know what will happen to me and what will happen to him." Upon hearing this, the people became concerned about Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'oon (may Allah be pleased with him). When the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyida Zainab or Sayyida Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with them), passed away, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Join our righteous and pious predecessor, Uthman bin Maz'oon." Then the women began to weep, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) started hitting them with a whip, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped his hand and said: "Umar, wait." Then he said: "Weep, weep, but avoid the wailing of Satan." After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The weeping that is from the eyes and the heart is from Allah Almighty and is due to the feeling of mercy, and that which is from the hands and the tongue is from Satan."

(Second chain of narration) In this, after "then it is from Satan," there is this addition: Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sat by the edge of the grave, and Lady Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, also sat by his side and began to weep. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, showed compassion to her and began to wipe her eyes with his garment.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates the incident of the death of the son of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came there and called for the child, then held him close to his chest. I saw that he was in the throes of death at that time, and the eyes of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) filled with tears. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, but we will only say that which will please our Lord. O Ibrahim! By Allah, we are certainly grieved because of your departure.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) wept at the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O dear father! How close you have become to your Lord. O dear father! I am informing Jibreel of your passing. O dear father! Jannat al-Firdaws is your abode.

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I went with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to an Ansari man who was near death, and his family were weeping. I said: Are you weeping in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Leave them, as long as this man is with them, let them weep. When it becomes obligatory, then they should not weep.

Jabir says: I narrated this hadith to Umar bin Humaid Qurashi, and he asked: What is the meaning of “when it becomes obligatory”? He said: When he is placed in the grave.

Muhammad bin Amr says: I was sitting in the market with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and Salamah bin Azraq was also present beside him. A funeral passed by, and the people with it were weeping. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If these relatives of the deceased would stop weeping, it would be better for the deceased. Salamah bin Azraq said: Abu Abdur Rahman! Are you saying this? He replied: Yes, I am saying it. Salamah bin Azraq said: I heard from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), when someone from the family of Marwan passed away, women gathered and began to weep. Marwan said: Abdul Malik! Get up and go forbid these women from weeping. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Let them weep. A relative of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, and women gathered and began to weep over him. Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) got up to stop and scold them, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Ibn Khattab, leave them; the eyes are shedding tears, the heart is grieved, and the time of calamity is near. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Did you yourself hear this hadith from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him)? He said: Yes. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him), who was among the Companions who pledged allegiance at Ridwan, his daughter passed away. He was riding a mule behind the funeral procession, when the women began to weep. He said: Do not recite elegies, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade elegies. However, you may shed as many tears as you wish. Then he said four takbirs in the funeral prayer, and after the fourth takbir, he stood for as long as the interval between two takbirs and continued to supplicate. Then he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform the funeral prayer in this manner as well.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to one of his daughters when she was in the throes of death. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held her and placed her in his lap. At that moment, her soul departed. Tears came to the eyes of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyida Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) also began to weep. Someone said to her: Are you weeping in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? She replied: Why should I not weep, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is also weeping? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I am not weeping; this is mercy. The soul of the believer departs from his sides while he is praising Allah Almighty. In another narration, it is stated: The believer is in all kinds of goodness in every condition; when his soul is departing from his sides, even then he is praising Allah Almighty.

Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (Sayyida Zainab, may Allah be pleased with her) sent word to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that her son or daughter was in the throes of death, so please come to us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent greetings to his daughter in reply and said: Whatever Allah takes and whatever He gives, everything belongs to Him, and with Him everything has an appointed time, so she should be patient and hope for reward. But this time, the daughter swore an oath and called the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and we also went along with him. The child was placed in the lap of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and at that time his soul was departing. Among the people present was Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), and I think Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) was also there. The eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) overflowed with tears. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! What is this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is mercy, which Allah places in the hearts of whichever of His servants He wills, and Allah is merciful to His merciful servants.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is mercy, which Allah has placed in the hearts of His servants, and Allah shows mercy only to those of His servants who are merciful."

Hadith 3085
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ سَعْدَ بْنَ مُعَاذٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَمَّا مَاتَ حَضَرَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ، قَالَتْ: فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ! إِنِّي لَأَعْرِفُ بُكَاءَ عُمَرَ مِنْ بُكَاءِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَأَنَا فِي حُجْرَتِي، وَكَانُوا كَمَا قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: {رُحْمَاءُ بَيْنَهُمْ}
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when Sayyiduna Saad bin Muadh (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came there. The Lady says: By the One in whose hand is the life of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! I could distinctly recognize the crying voices of Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), even though I was in my chamber. The Companions were among themselves just as Allah Almighty has said about them: {رُحْمَآئُ بَیْنَہُمْ} (Surah Al-Fath: 29) that is: they were merciful among themselves.
