Hadith 3061
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a grave and said: This deceased is being punished now because of the weeping of his family over him. Upon hearing this, Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: May Allah forgive Abu Abdur Rahman, he has made a mistake. Allah Almighty has said: {وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَۃٌ وِّزْرَ أُخْرٰی} (Surah Al-An'am: 164) meaning: No bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said: Indeed, this deceased is being punished now while his family is weeping over him.
Hadith 3062
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that someone said to her that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this hadith from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the deceased is punished because of the weeping of the living. She said: Abu Abdur Rahman has made a mistake; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) actually said that: The relatives of the deceased are weeping over him, while he is being punished because of his own sins.
Hadith 3063
(Second chain) Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said to Urwah: My nephew! Abu Abdur Rahman, that is, Ibn Umar, has made a mistake in what he heard. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned a man who was being punished for the crime of his deeds, and his family was weeping over him. By Allah, no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another soul.
Hadith 3064
Umrah narrates that it was mentioned before Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that the deceased is punished because of the weeping of the living. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: May Allah forgive Abu Abdur Rahman, he is not lying, it seems that he has forgotten or made a mistake. The reality is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a Jewish woman whose family was weeping over her, and at that time the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These people are weeping and she is being punished in her grave.
Hadith 3065
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever wailing is done over, he will be punished on the Day of Resurrection because of that wailing.
Hadith 3066
Abu Rabi’ says: I was with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) at a funeral. When he heard the voice of a weeper, he sent a man to silence him. I said: O Abu Abdur Rahman! Why did you make him quiet? He said: As long as the deceased has not been placed in the grave, he is punished because of this weeping.
Hadith 3067
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any disbeliever from among the Quraysh died, his family would weep over him and say: The one who fed many people, the one who fought... Because of these words, Allah Almighty would increase his punishment.
Hadith 3068
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Him in Whose hand is my soul! These people are weeping over him, while he is being punished in the grave because of his sins.
Hadith 3069
Under this chapter, the following sub-chapters and hadiths have been mentioned.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Because of wailing over the deceased, he is punished in the grave.
Hadith 3070
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) wept loudly over Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: O Hafsah! Have you not heard that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The one over whom people weep loudly is punished. Then Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) wept loudly, upon which Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Suhaib! Do you not know that the one over whom people weep loudly is punished.
Hadith 3071
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Call a physician so that he may examine my wound. Accordingly, an Arab physician was called. He gave Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) nabidh (a drink). When it came out from the wound below the navel (in the form of blood-mixed nabidh), the nabidh became like blood. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Then I called another physician from among the Ansar of Banu Muawiyah. He came and gave Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) milk to drink, but it came out pure white milk from the wound. The physician said: O Leader of the Believers! Make your will, (you are about to pass away). Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This brother from Banu Muawiyah is speaking the truth; if you had said anything else, I would have considered it wrong. Upon hearing this, the people began to weep. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do not weep over us; whoever wants to weep should go outside. Have you not heard the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that the deceased is punished because of the weeping of his family? For this reason, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) would not allow weeping near the deceased, whether it was his own children or anyone else.
Hadith 3072
Abdullah bin Abi Mulaika says: I was with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and we were waiting for the funeral of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan’s (may Allah be pleased with him) daughter, Umm Aban. Amr bin Uthman was also present there. Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) also arrived, while a man was guiding him (because he had become blind). I think that this man informed him about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), so he came and sat next to me, and I came between the two of them. When the sound of weeping was heard from the house, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: The deceased is punished because of the weeping of his family. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith in an absolute sense and did not specify it to the Jew. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: We were with the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), when we reached the place of Baida, we saw a man sitting in the shade of a tree. The Commander of the Faithful (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: Go and see, who is this man? I went and saw that it was Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him). I returned and said: You commanded me to find out who that man is, and he is Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him). The Commander of the Faithful (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Go and tell him to join us. I said: His family is with him. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Even if his family is with him, let him join us. When we reached Madinah Munawwarah, the Commander of the Faithful was attacked (and he was wounded). Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: Oh my brother! Oh my friend! Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Did you not hear that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that the deceased is punished because of the weeping of some of his family? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith in an absolute sense, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) restricted it to some of the family. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: Then I went to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and narrated to her the hadith of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). She said: By Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say that the deceased is punished because of someone’s weeping. Rather, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah increases the punishment of the disbeliever because of the weeping of his family. And it is Allah alone who makes one laugh and weep. The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Qasim said: When the words of Sayyiduna Umar and Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) reached Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: Indeed, you are narrating to me from people who are neither themselves liars nor have they been lied against, but the real matter is that mistakes can occur in hearing.
Hadith 3073
Ali bin Rabi’ah Asadi says: A man from the Ansar named Qarzah bin Ka’b passed away and people began to wail over him. In one narration, it is stated that in Kufa, Qarzah bin Ka’b Ansari was the first person over whom wailing was done. Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) ascended the pulpit and, after praising and glorifying Allah Almighty, said: What place does wailing have in Islam? I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Lying about me is not like lying about an ordinary person. Beware! Whoever deliberately lies about me, let him prepare his abode in Hell. And I also heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever is wailed over, he will be punished because of the wailing done over him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The deceased is punished because of the weeping of the living. When the mourning woman says: “Alas, my arm! Alas, my helper! Alas, the one who clothed me!” then the angels shake the deceased and say: Were you her arm? Were you her helper? Were you the one who clothed her? Usaid says: I said (in astonishment): Subhan Allah! Allah the Exalted says: {وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَۃٌ وِّزْرَ أُخْرٰی} (Surah Al-An’am: 164), meaning: No bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another. But Musa bin Abi Musa said: May you perish! I am narrating to you the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) through Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), and you say this? Which one of us has lied? By Allah! I have not lied upon Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), nor did Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) lie upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
