بَابُ قِرَاءَةِ يس عِنْدَ الْمُحْتَضَرِ وَمَا جَاءَ فِي شِدَّةِ الْمَوْتِ وَنَزْعِ الرُّوحِ وَتَغْمِيضِ
Chapter on reciting Yasin at the dying person's side, what is reported regarding the severity of death, the soul's departure, and closing the eyes
Hadith 3014
عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ ثَنَا صَفْوَانُ حَدَّثَنِي الْمَشِيخَةُ، أَنَّهُمْ حَضَرُوا غُضَيْفَ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ الثُّمَالِيَّ حِينَ اشْتَدَّ سَوْقُهُ، فَقَالَ: هَلْ مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ يَقْرَأُ يَسْ؟ قَالَ: فَقَرَأَهَا صَالِحُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ السَّكُونِيُّ، فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ مِنْهَا قُبِضَ، قَالَ: فَكَانَ الْمَشِيخَةُ يَقُولُونَ إِذَا قُرِئَتْ عِنْدَ الْمَيِّتِ خُفِّفَ عَنْهُ بِهَا، قَالَ صُفْوَانُ وَقَرَأَهَا عِيسَى بْنُ الْمُعْتَمِرِ عِنْدَ ابْنِ مَعْبَدٍ
Safwan says: The elders narrated to me that they went to Ghudhayf bin Harith Thamali, while he was in the throes of death and the extraction of the soul was severe. A man said: Is there anyone among you who can recite Surah Ya-Sin? In response, Salih bin Shurayh Sukuni recited Surah Ya-Sin, and he had only reached the fortieth verse when his soul was taken. That is why the people of knowledge used to say that when this Surah is recited over someone near death, it brings ease to him because of it. Safwan says that Isa bin Mu'tamir had recited it over Ibn Ma'bad.
Hadith 3015
عَنْ مَعْقِلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((يَسْ قَلْبُ الْقُرْآنِ، لَا يَقْرَأُهَا رَجُلٌ يُرِيدُ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى وَالدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ غُفِرَ لَهُ، وَاقْرَأُوهَا عَلَى مَوْتَاكُمْ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surah Yaseen is the heart of the Noble Qur'an. Whoever recites it seeking the pleasure of Allah Almighty and success in the Hereafter, he will be forgiven. And you should recite this Surah near the one who is dying.
Hadith 3016
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((اقْرَأُوهَا عَلَى مَوْتَاكُمْ)) يَعْنِي يَسْ
(Second chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Recite Surah Ya-Sin near those who are close to death.
Hadith 3017
عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِذَا حَضَرْتُمُ الْمَيِّتَ أَوْ الْمَرِيضَ فَقُولُوا خَيْرًا، فَإِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ يُؤَمِّنُونَ عَلَى مَا تَقُولُونَ))، قَالَتْ: فَلَمَّا مَاتَ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّ أَبَا سَلَمَةَ قَدْ مَاتَ، فَقَالَ: ((قُولِي اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلَهُ وَأَعْقِبْنِي مِنْهُ عُقْبَى حَسَنَةً))، قَالَتْ: فَقُلْتُ: فَأَعْقَبَنِيَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مَنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ لِي مِنْهُ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you visit a sick person or someone near death, say good words, because whatever you say, the angels say Ameen to it. When my husband, Sayyiduna Abu Salama (may Allah be pleased with him), passed away, I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Abu Salama has died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite this supplication: "Allahumma ighfir li wa lahu wa a’qibni minhu ‘uqba hasanah" (O Allah! Forgive me and him, and grant me a better substitute than him). Then Allah Almighty granted me, in his place, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who was better for me than him.
Hadith 3018
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَمْ يَلْقَ ابْنُ آدَمَ شَيْئًا قَطُّ خَلَقَهُ اللَّهُ أَشَدَّ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْمَوْتِ ثُمَّ إِنَّ الْمَوْتَ لَأَهْوَنُ مِمَّا بَعْدَهُ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Of all the things that Allah Almighty has created, the hardest for the son of Adam is death, and yet death is much easier compared to the stages that follow it.
Hadith 3019
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يَمُوتُ، وَعِنْدَهُ قَدَحٌ فِيهِ مَاءٌ فَيُدْخِلُ يَدَهُ فِي الْقَدَحِ، ثُمَّ يَمْسَحُ وَجْهَهُ بِالْمَاءِ، ثُمَّ يَقُولُ: ((اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى سَكَرَاتِ الْمَوْتِ))
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was passing away. There was a bowl near him, in which there was water. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would put his hand into the bowl, then wipe it over his face and supplicate: "O Allah, help me in the agonies of death."
Hadith 3020
وَعَنْهَا أَيْضًا قَالَتْ: تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْ قُبِضَ أَوْ مَاتَ وَهُوَ بَيْنَ حَاقِنَتِي وَذَاقِنَتِي، فَلَا أَكْرَهُ شِدَّةَ الْمَوْتِ لِأَحَدٍ بَعْدَ الَّذِي رَأَيْتُ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away while he was between my chest and chin. After witnessing the scene of the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I do not dislike the severity of death for anyone.
Hadith 3021
عَنْ ثَابِتِ الْبُنَانِيِّ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَمَّا قَالَتْ فَاطِمَةُ ذَلِكَ يَعْنِي لَمَّا وَجَدَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ كَرْبِ الْمَوْتِ مَا وَجَدَ قَالَتْ فَاطِمَةُ: وَاكْرَبَاهُ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((يَا بُنَيَّةُ! إِنَّهُ قَدْ حَضَرَ أَبَاكِ مَا لَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِتَارِكٍ مِنْهُ أَحَدًا لِمُوَافَاةِ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ))
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) felt the pangs of death, Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Oh, the calamity!" Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Daughter! That thing has reached your father for the attainment of the Day of Judgment, regarding which Allah Almighty has not spared anyone."
Hadith 3022
عَنْ شَدَّادِ بْنِ أَوْسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِذَا حَضَرْتُمْ مَوْتَاكُمْ فَأَغْمِضُوا الْبَصَرَ، فَإِنَّ الْبَصَرَ يَتْبَعُ الرُّوحَ، وَقُولُوا خَيْرًا، فَإِنَّهُ يُؤَمَّنُ عَلَى مَا قَالَ أَهْلُ الْبَيْتِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you come to your deceased ones, close their eyes, for the gaze follows the soul, and speak good words, for whatever the household says at that time, it is answered with "Ameen."
