Chapter on the virtue of long life with good deeds and the virtue of one who dies a stranger
Hadith 2997
عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! أَيُّ النَّاسِ خَيْرٌ؟ قَالَ: ((مَنْ طَالَ عُمُرُهُ وَحَسُنَ عَمَلُهُ))، قَالَ: فَأَيُّ النَّاسِ شَرٌّ؟ قَالَ: ((مَنْ طَالَ عُمُرُهُ وَسَاءَ عَمَلُهُ))
Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! Who is the best person among the people? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: The one whose life is long and whose deeds are good. He then asked: Who is the worst person among the people? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: The one whose life is long and whose deeds are bad.
Hadith 2998
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((أَلَا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِخَيْرِكُمْ؟)) قَالُوا: نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! قَالَ: ((خِيَارُكُمْ أَطْوَلُكُمْ أَعْمَارًا وَأَحْسَنُكُمْ أَعْمَالًا))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Shall I not tell you who among you is the best person? They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The best among you are those whose lives are long and whose deeds are good.
Hadith 2999
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: إِذَا بَلَغَ الرَّجُلُ الْمُسْلِمُ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً آمَنَهُ اللَّهُ مِنْ أَنْوَاعِ الْبَلَاءِ مِنَ الْجُنُونِ وَالْبَرَصِ وَالْجُذَامِ، وَإِذَا بَلَغَ الْخَمْسِينَ لَيَّنَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَيْهِ حِسَابَهُ، وَإِذَا بَلَغَ السِّتِّينَ رَزَقَهُ اللَّهُ إِنَابَةً، يُحِبُّهُ عَلَيْهَا، وَإِذَا بَلَغَ السَّبْعِينَ أَحَبَّهُ اللَّهُ وَأَحَبَّهُ أَهْلُ السَّمَاءِ، وَإِذَا بَلَغَ الثَّمَانِينَ تَقَبَّلَ اللَّهُ مِنْهُ حَسَنَاتِهِ وَمَحَا عَنْهُ سَيِّئَاتِهِ، وَإِذَا بَلَغَ التِّسْعِينَ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ، وَسُمِّيَ أَسِيرَ اللَّهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَشُفِّعَ فِي أَهْلِهِ
Imam Haythami said: Bazzar narrated this hadith with two chains as marfu‘, and the narrators of one of them are trustworthy. Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, says: When a Muslim man reaches the age of forty years, Allah Almighty protects him from insanity, leukoderma, and leprosy. When he reaches the age of fifty years, Allah makes his reckoning easy for him. When he reaches the age of sixty years, he is granted such ability to turn to Allah that Allah loves him. When he reaches the age of seventy years, Allah loves him and so do the inhabitants of the heavens. When he reaches the age of eighty years, Allah accepts his good deeds and erases his sins. And when he reaches the age of ninety years, Allah forgives all his past and future sins, and his name is recorded as Allah’s prisoner on earth, and his intercession is accepted for his family and household.
Hadith 3000
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَنْ أَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ سِتُّونَ سَنَةً، فَقَدْ أَعْذَرَ اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ فِي الْعُمُرِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When a person's age reaches sixty years, Allah Almighty removes his excuse regarding age.
Hadith 3001
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: تُوُفِّيَ رَجُلٌ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: ((يَا لَيْتَهُ مَاتَ فِي غَيْرِ مَوْلِدِهِ))، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ: لِمَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ إِذَا تُوُفِّيَ فِي غَيْرِ مَوْلِدِهِ قِيسَ لَهُ مِنْ مَوْلِدِهِ إِلَى مُنْقَطَعِ أَثَرِهِ فِي الْجَنَّةِ))
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man died in Madinah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led his funeral prayer and said: "If only this man had died somewhere other than his place of birth." A man asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Why?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "When a person dies in a city other than his own, he is granted in Paradise a place equal to the distance from his city to the place of his death."
