Chapter on seeking rain by supplication in the Friday sermon and those who sought rain without prayer

5 hadith
Hadith 2931
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked whether the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to raise his hands (for supplication). He said: On a Friday, someone said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! There is a drought, the land has dried up, and livestock are perishing. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hands, until I saw the whiteness of his armpits, then he supplicated for rain. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hands, there was not a cloud in the sky, but before we had finished the prayer, (so much rain fell that) it became difficult even for a young man living nearby to return to his house. When the next Friday came, the people said: O Messenger of Allah! Houses are collapsing and caravans have stopped. Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled at the quick impatience of the son of Adam and said: "Allahumma hawalayna wa la 'alayna." That is: O Allah! Let the rain fall around us, not upon us. So the clouds moved away from Madinah Munawwarah.

(Second chain) Thabit says: Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was sitting by the pulpit on Friday and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon, when someone from among the people of the mosque said: O Messenger of Allah! The rain has been withheld, ... ... . Then he narrated as in the previous hadith.

Hadith 2933
(Third Chain of Transmission) Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: On the day of Jumu’ah, a man called out to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon to the people in Madinah Munawwarah, and said: O Messenger of Allah! The rain has stopped, the earth is devoid of vegetation, and the people are suffering from famine, so please supplicate to your Lord for rain for us. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards the sky; we did not see many clouds. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated, and the clouds began to gather and increase, then it started to rain. The streams of Madinah began to flow, and its paths became like rivers. The rain continued in this manner until the next Jumu’ah and did not stop. (On the next Jumu’ah) the same man or another stood up while the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon, and he said: O Messenger of Allah! Supplicate to Allah to withhold the rain from us. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and supplicated: O Allah! (Let it rain) around us, not upon us. As soon as he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated to his Lord, the clouds parted and moved to the right and left of Madinah and began to rain around Madinah, while no rain was falling in Madinah itself.

Hadith 2934
(The Fourth Chain) Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), people were afflicted with drought. On a Friday, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon when a Bedouin man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! The livestock have perished and the families are hungry, so pray to Allah to give us water. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hands (and prayed), while there was not a patch of cloud visible in the sky. Then clouds gathered like mountains, and before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had descended from the pulpit, we saw the rain falling upon his blessed beard. (Then the rest of the hadith was narrated.)

Hadith 2935
Sharjeel bin Simt said to Sayyiduna Ka’b bin Murrah, may Allah be pleased with him: O Ka’b bin Murrah! Narrate to us a hadith of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and be careful. He said: I was listening when a man came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: Pray to Allah for rain for the tribe of Mudar. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: You are very bold, is it for Mudar? He said: O Messenger of Allah! You asked Allah for help and He helped you, and you prayed to Allah and He accepted, (so please pray this time as well). So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his hands and prayed: O Allah! Send down upon us such rain that removes hardship and distress, makes the land green, and has a good outcome, and let it be a general rain and abundant in water, let it come quickly and not be delayed, let it be beneficial and not harmful. Thus, the people's request was fulfilled and they soon came back to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, complaining about the abundance of rain, saying: The houses are collapsing. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his hands and prayed: O Allah! Let it rain around us, not upon us. The clouds split and began to move to the right and left.
