بَابُ مَشْرُوعِيَّةِ الصَّلَاةِ لَهَا وَكَيْفَ يُنَادَى بِهَا
Chapter on the legitimacy of the prayer for it and how it is called
Hadith 2885
عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ عِلَاقَةَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ شُعْبَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ مَاتَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَقَالَ النَّاسُ: انْكَسَفَتْ لِمَوْتِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ لَا يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَادْعُوا اللَّهَ وَصَلُّوا حَتَّى تَنْكَشِفَ))
Sayyiduna Mughira bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), on the day when (the Prophet’s son) Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, the sun was eclipsed. People began to say that the eclipse occurred because of the death of Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him). But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah Almighty; they do not lose their light because of anyone’s death or life. When you see this, then supplicate and offer prayer until it becomes clear.
Hadith 2886
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ إِذَا خَسَفَا أَوْ أَحَدُهُمَا، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى يَنْجَلِيَ خُسُوفُ أَيِّهِمَا خَسَفَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When the sun and the moon or one of them loses its light and you see this occurrence, then perform prayer until the eclipse is over, whichever it has affected.
Hadith 2887
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لَا يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ وَلَٰكِنَّهُمَا آيَةٌ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَصَلُّوا))
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, the sun and the moon do not lose their light because of anyone’s life or death, rather both of them are among the signs of Allah Almighty. Therefore, when you see either of them (eclipsed), then perform prayer.
Hadith 2888
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) قَالَ: كُنَّا نَرَى الْآيَاتِ فِي زَمَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَرَكَاتٍ وَأَنْتُمْ تَرَوْنَهَا تَخْوِيفًا
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: In the time of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to regard certain signs as a source of blessing, whereas you consider them as a source of fear or intimidation. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: In the time of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to regard certain signs as a source of blessing, whereas you consider them as a source of fear or intimidation.
Hadith 2889
عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الْبَدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لَا يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ، قَالَ يَزِيدُ (أَحَدُ الرُّوَاةِ) وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ وَلَٰكِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَصَلُّوا))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Badri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely, the sun and the moon do not lose their light due to anyone’s death or life; rather, they are two signs among the signs of Allah. Therefore, when you see them in this state, perform prayer.
Hadith 2890
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَنُودِيَ بِالصَّلَاةِ جَامِعَةً فَرَكَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فِي سَجْدَةٍ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فِي سَجْدَةٍ ثُمَّ جُلِّيَ عَنِ الشَّمْسِ، قَالَ: قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: مَا سَجَدْتُّ سُجُودًا قَطُّ وَلَا رَكَعْتُ رُكُوعًا قَطُّ أَطْوَلَ مِنْهُ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the sun was eclipsed, so the call of "As-Salat Jami’ah" was given. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed two bowings (ruku) in one rak’ah, then stood up and again performed two bowings in one rak’ah, then the sun became clear. Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I have never performed such a prostration nor such a bowing that was longer than this.
Hadith 2891
عَنْ أَبِي حَفْصَةَ مَوْلَى عَائِشَةَ أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّهُ لَمَّا كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَوَضَّأَ وَأَمَرَ فَنُودِيَ أَنَّ الصَّلَاةَ جَامِعَةً فَقَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ فِي صَلَاتِهِ، قَالَتْ فَأَحْسِبُهُ قَرَأَ سُورَةَ الْبَقَرَةِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ: ((سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ)) ثُمَّ قَامَ مِثْلَ مَا قَامَ وَلَمْ يَسْجُدْ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَسَجَدَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَنَعَ مِثْلَ مَا صَنَعَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فِي سَجْدَةٍ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ وَجُلِّيَ عَنِ الشَّمْسِ
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: During the time of the Prophet, there was a solar eclipse, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and gave the order, and the call "As-Salat Jami’ah" was announced. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began the prayer and stood for a long time. I think he recited Surah Al-Baqarah. Then he bowed (ruku’) and made a long bowing, then said "Sami’ Allahu liman Hamidah" and then stood again for as long as the previous standing, and did not prostrate. After that, he bowed again and then prostrated. Then he stood up (for the second rak’ah) and did the same as he had done in the first rak’ah, that is, he performed two bowings in one rak’ah, then sat down (for tashahhud), and by then the sun had become clear.
