بَابُ مَا يَقُولُهُ الْمُسَافِرُ عِنْدَ رُكُوبِ دَابَّتِهِ وَعِنْدَ عَثْرَتِهَا وَمَا جَاءَ فِي الِارْتِدَافِ
Chapter on What the Traveler Says When Mounting His Animal, When It Stumbles, and What Is Reported About Riding Together
Hadith 2304
عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أُتِيَ بِدَابَّةٍ لِيَرْكَبَهَا فَلَمَّا وَضَعَ رِجْلَهُ فِي الرِّكَابِ قَالَ: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، فَلَمَّا اسْتَوَى عَلَيْهَا قَالَ: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، {سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ}، ثُمَّ حَمِدَ اللَّهَ ثَلَاثًا وَكَبَّرَ ثَلَاثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: سُبْحَانَكَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ قَدْ ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي، ثُمَّ ضَحِكَ، فَقُلْتُ: مِمَّ ضَحِكْتَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ؟ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَعَلَ مِثْلَ مَا فَعَلْتُ، ثُمَّ ضَحِكَ، فَقُلْتُ: مِمَّ ضَحِكْتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ: ((يَعْجَبُ الرَّبُّ مِنْ عَبْدِهِ إِذَا قَالَ رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَيَقُولُ: عَلِمَ عَبْدِي أَنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ غَيْرِي))
Ali bin Rabi’ah says: I saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), a mount was brought to him so that he could ride it. When he placed his foot in the stirrup, he said “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah). When he mounted it, he said: “All praise is for Allah, Glory be to Him, Who has subjected this (mount) to us, while we were not able to control it, and surely to our Lord we shall return.” Then he praised Allah three times and declared His greatness three times. Then he said: “Glory be to You, there is no deity except You. Indeed, I have wronged myself, so forgive me.” Then he laughed. I said: “O Commander of the Faithful! Why did you laugh?” He said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do just as I have done, then he laughed. I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Why did you laugh?’ He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Your Lord is amazed at His servant when he says: O my Lord! Forgive me, so Allah says: My servant knows that none forgives sins except Me.’”
Hadith 2305
عَنْ عَلِّي بْنِ طَلْحَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَرْدَفَهُ عَلَى دَابَّةِهِ فَلَمَّا اسْتَوَى عَلَيْهِ كَبَّرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثَلَاثًا، وَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ ثَلَاثًا، وَسَبَّحَ اللَّهَ ثَلَاثًا، وَهَلَّلَ اللَّهَ وَاحِدَةً، ثُمَّ اسْتَلْقَى عَلَيْهِ فَضَحِكَ، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ: ((مَا مِنْ امْرِئٍ يَرْكَبُ دَابَّةَهُ فَيَصْنَعُ كَمَا صَنَعْتُ إِلَّا أَقْبَلَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى فَضَحِكَ إِلَيْهِ كَمَا ضَحِكْتُ إِلَيْكَ))
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had seated him on his mount. When he (the Prophet) sat upright on the mount, he said “Allahu Akbar” three times, “Alhamdulillah” three times, and “La ilaha illallah” once. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) leaned back on it and smiled. After that, he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards me and said: Whoever mounts his ride and does as I have done, Allah Almighty turns towards him and looks at him and laughs, just as I have turned towards you and laughed.
Hadith 2306
عَنْ أَبِي تَمِيمَةَ الْهُجَيْمِيِّ عَمَّنْ كَانَ رَدِيفَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ كُنْتُ رَدِيفَهُ عَلَى حِمَارٍ فَعَثَرَ الْحِمَارُ فَقُلْتُ: تَعَسَ الشَّيْطَانُ، فَقَالَ لِيَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَا تَقُلْ تَعَسَ الشَّيْطَانُ، فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا قُلْتَ تَعَسَ الشَّيْطَانُ تَعَاظَمَ الشَّيْطَانُ فِي نَفْسِهِ وَقَالَ صَرَعْتُهُ بِقُوَّتِي فَإِذَا قُلْتُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَصَاغَرَتْ إِلَيْهِ نَفْسُهُ حَتَّى يَكُونَ أَصْغَرَ مِنْ ذُبَابٍ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ) تَصَاغَرَ حَتَّى يَصِيرَ مِثْلَ الذُّبَابِ))
Abu Tamimah Hajimi narrates from a companion who was riding behind the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he says: I was riding on a donkey behind the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the donkey stumbled, upon which I said: May the devil perish. But the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Do not say, "May the devil perish," because when you say, "May the devil perish," the devil begins to consider himself great in his heart and says: I made him fall by my power. But (in such a situation) if you say "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah), the devil's self becomes humiliated, to the extent that he becomes even smaller than a fly. And in another narration, it is mentioned that he becomes so humiliated that he becomes as small as a fly.
Hadith 2307
عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَمْزَةَ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَاهُ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((عَلَى ظَهْرِ كُلِّ بَعِيرٍ شَيْطَانٌ فَإِذَا رَكِبْتُمُوهَا فَسَمُّوا اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَلَا تُقَصِّرُوا عَنْ حَاجَاتِكُمْ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hamzah Aslami, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: There is a devil on the back of every camel, so when you ride it, mention the name of Allah Almighty, and then do not be lazy in fulfilling your needs.
Hadith 2308
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ الْأَزْدِيِّ أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَلَّمَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا اسْتَوَى عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ خَارِجًا إِلَى سَفَرٍ كَبَّرَ ثَلَاثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: (({سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ}، اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَٰذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى، اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَٰذَا وَاطْوِعَنَا بُعْدَهُ، اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ وَسُوءِ الْمَنْظَرِ فِي الْأَهْلِ وَالْمَالِ (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: اللَّهُمَّ اصْحَبْنَا فِي سَفَرِنَا، وَاخْلُفْنَا فِي أَهْلِنَا)))، وَإِذَا رَجَعَ قَالَهُنَّ وَزَادَ فِيهِنَّ: ((آئِبُونَ تَائِبُونَ عَابِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ))
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, taught Ali Azdi that when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out on a journey and mounted his camel, he would say "Allahu Akbar" three times, then recite: "Glory be to Him Who has subjected this to us, while we were not able to subdue it, and surely to our Lord we must return. O Allah, we ask You for goodness and piety in this journey of ours, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and fold up its distance for us. O Allah, You are our companion in the journey and the successor over our family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, from returning in sorrow and distress, and from witnessing any evil in my family and wealth." And in one narration: "O Allah, be our companion in the journey and our successor among our family." When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, returned from the journey, he would say the same words and add these: "Returning, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord."
Hadith 2309
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا خَرَجَ سَفَرًا فَرَكِبَ رَاحِلَتَهُ قَالَ: ((اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ، وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ … )) فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that when the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, set out on a journey, he would recite this supplication after mounting his ride: O Allah! You are our companion in travel and our successor in the home, ... . Then he mentioned words similar to those in the previous narration.
Hadith 2310
عَنْ أَبِي لَاسٍ الْخُرَاعِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: حَمَلَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى إِبِلٍ مِنْ إِبِلِ الصَّدَقَةِ ضِعَافٍ إِلَى الْحَجِّ، قَالَ: فَقُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ هَٰذِهِ الْإِبِلَ ضِعَافٌ، نَخْشَى أَنْ لَا تَحْمِلَنَا، قَالَ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَا مِنْ بَعِيرٍ إِلَّا فِي ذِرْوَتِهِ شَيْطَانٌ فَارْكَبُوهُنَّ، وَاذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِنَّ كَمَا أُمِرْتُمْ ثُمَّ امْتَهِنُوهُنَّ لِأَنْفُسِكُمْ فَإِنَّمَا يَحْمِلُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ))
Sayyiduna Abu Las Khuzai (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made us ride weak camels given as charity for Hajj. We said: O Messenger of Allah, these camels are weak, we fear that they may not be able to carry us. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is a devil on the hump of every camel, so when you are about to mount them, mention the name of Allah as you have been commanded, then use them for your service. Surely, it is Allah alone who makes them carry (i.e., He creates the strength and patience in these camels to bear the load).
Hadith 2311
عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ أَنَّ حَبِيبَ بْنَ مَسْلَمَةَ أَتَى قَيْسَ بْنَ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ فِي الْفِتْنَةِ الْأُولَى وَهُوَ عَلَى فَرَسٍ فَتَأَخَّرَ عَنِ السَّرْجِ وَقَالَ: ارْكَبْ فَأَبَى، فَقَالَ لَهُ قَيْسُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: صَاحِبُ الدَّابَّةِ أَوْلَى بِصَدْرِهَا))، فَقَالَ لَهُ حَبِيبٌ إِنِّي لَسْتُ أَجْهَلُ مَا قَالَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَكِنِّي أَخْشَى عَلَيْكَ
Abdur Rahman bin Umayyah says that Sayyiduna Habib bin Muslimah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Qais bin Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him); this was during the time of the first tribulation. He was mounted on a horse, and he moved back from the saddle and said to him: “Mount (the horse),” but Sayyiduna Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) refused to mount at that place and said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: The owner of the mount has more right to ride at its front part.” In response, Sayyiduna Habib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I am not ignorant of this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but I fear (an enemy) for you.”
Hadith 2312
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يَقُولُ: بَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْشِي إِذْ جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ مَعَهُ حِمَارٌ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! ارْكَبْ، فَتَأَخَّرَ الرَّجُلُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَا، أَنْتَ أَحَقُّ بِصَدْرِ دَابَّتِكَ مِنِّي إِلَّا أَنْ تَجْعَلَهُ لِي))، قَالَ: فَإِنِّي قَدْ جَعَلْتُهُ لَكَ، قَالَ: فَرَكِبَ
Sayyiduna Buraidah Aslami narrates: Once, it happened that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was walking, when suddenly a man, who had a donkey with him, came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Please ride (on the donkey), while he himself began to move back. Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, (I will not ride on the front part of it, because) you have more right to the front part of your mount than I do. However, if you permit me, then it is fine. He said: I have given you permission. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted (on the front part of the donkey).
Hadith 2313
عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَضَى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّ صَاحِبَ الدَّابَّةِ أَحَقُّ بِصَدْرِهَا
Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) decided that the owner of the mount has more right to ride on its front part.
