Fourth Section on Witr with Seven, Nine, Eleven, and Thirteen Units
Hadith 2225
عَنِ الْحَكَمِ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِمِقْسَمٍ: أُوْتِرُ بِثَلَاثٍ ثُمَّ أَخْرُجُ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ تَفُوتَنِي، قَالَ: لَا وَتْرَ إِلَّا بِخَمْسٍ أَوْسَبْعٍ، قَالَ: فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِيَحْيَى بْنِ الْجَزَّارِ وَمُجَاهِدٍ، فَقَالَا لِي: سَلْهُ عَمَّنْ؟ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ؟ فَقَالَ: عَنِ الثِّقَةِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ وَمَيْمُونَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Hakam says: I said to Maqsim: Out of fear that I might miss the Fajr prayer, I (quickly) pray three Witr and then go out for the prayer, but he said: Witr are at least five or seven. I told this statement of his to Yahya bin Jazaar and Mujahid, and they said: Ask him from whom he narrates this report. When I asked him about this, he said: A trustworthy narrator related it to me from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), and they from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 2226
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا عَفَّانَ ثَنَا مُلَازِمُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو السُّحَيْمِيُّ ثَنَا جَدِّي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَدْرٍ قَالَ وَحَدَّثَنِي سِرَاجُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ أَنَّ قَيْسَ بْنَ طَلْقٍ حَدَّثَهُمَا أَنَّ أَبَاهُ طَلْقَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ أَتَانَا فِي رَمَضَانَ وَكَانَ عِنْدَنَا حَتَّى أَمْسَى فَصَلَّى بِنَا الْقِيَامَ فِي رَمَضَانَ وَأَوْتَرَ بِنَا ثُمَّ انْحَدَرَ إِلَى مَسْجِدِ رِيمَانَ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ حَتَّى بَقِيَ الْوِتْرُ فَقَدَّمَ رَجُلًا فَأَوْتَرَ بِهِمْ وَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((لَا وَتْرَانِ فِي لَيْلَةٍ))
Qais bin Talq narrates: My father, Talq bin Ali, came to us during Ramadan and stayed with us until evening. Then he led us in the night prayer during Ramadan and also performed the Witr prayer for us. After that, he went towards the mosque of Rayman and led them in the night prayer as well. When it was time for the Witr prayer, he appointed another man to lead, so that man led the Witr prayer. Then he said: I heard the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say: There are not two Witr prayers in one night.
Hadith 2227
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ إِذَا سُئِلَ عَنِ الْوِتْرِ، قَالَ: أَمَّا أَنَا فَلَوْ أَوْتَرْتُ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَنَامَ ثُمَّ أَرَدْتُّ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ بِاللَّيْلِ شَفَعْتُ بِوَاحِدَةٍ مَا مَضَى مِنْ وَتْرِي ثُمَّ صَلَّيْتُ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِذَا قَضَيْتُ صَلَاتِي أَوْتَرْتُ بِوَاحِدَةٍ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ أَنْ يُجْعَلَ آخِرَ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ الْوِتْرُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he was asked about Witr, he would say: As far as I am concerned, if I perform Witr before sleeping, but then intend to pray at night, I perform one rak‘ah to make the previous Witr even, then I continue to pray two rak‘ahs at a time, and when I have completed the desired prayers, I perform one Witr at the end, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that Witr should be made the last prayer of the night.
Hadith 2228
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ، فَإِذَا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ لِي: ((قُومِي فَأَوْتِرِي))
Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer prayers at night. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished, he would say to me: Get up and offer Witr.
Hadith 2229
عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُصَلِّي عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ وَيُوْتِرُ عَلَيْهَا وَيَذْكُرُ ذَلِكَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer voluntary prayers on his mount, and he would also perform Witr on it.
Hadith 2230
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْتَرَ عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Witr prayer on a camel.
Hadith 2231
عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ قَالَ: قَالَ لِي ابْنُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: أَمَا لَكَ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُسْوَةٌ؟ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُوْتِرُ عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ
Saeed bin Yasar says: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Is there not an example for you in the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to offer Witr on his camel.
Hadith 2232
عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كَانَ يُصَلِّي عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ تَطَوُّعًا، فَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يُوْتِرَ نَزَلَ فَأَوْتَرَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ
Saeed bin Jubair says that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to perform voluntary prayers on his mount, but when he intended to perform the Witr prayer, he would dismount and perform Witr on the ground.
