Hadith 2178
It is narrated from Abu Tamim Jaishani that Sayyiduna Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon to the people on Friday and said: Sayyiduna Abu Basrah (may Allah be pleased with him) told me that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely Allah Almighty has given you an extra prayer, and that is Witr. You should offer it between the time of Isha prayer and Fajr prayer. Abu Tamim says: Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) took my hand and went to the mosque to Sayyiduna Abu Basrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him: The thing that Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates, did you hear it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes, I heard this hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 2179
(Similar chain of narration) It is the same, but with some detail as follows: So we went to Sayyiduna Abu Basrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and found him near the door that was close to the house of Sayyiduna Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu Basrah! Did you hear the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: Surely Allah Almighty has given you another prayer, so perform it between the time of Isha and Fajr prayer; it is Witr, it is Witr? He said: Yes. He then said: Did you hear it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes. He then said: Did you really hear it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes.

Ash'ath bin Qais says: I became a guest of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). First, he caught his wife and struck her, then said: O Ash'ath! Remember three things from me, I learned these from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Do not ask a man why he struck his wife, do not sleep without offering Witr, and the third thing I have forgotten.

He replied: At the beginning of the night, right after the Isha prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then asked: O Umar! When do you perform it? He replied: At the end of the night. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Bakr! You have chosen caution, and O Umar! You have chosen strength.

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes perform Witr before sleeping and sometimes after sleeping. Similarly, he would sometimes perform the ritual bath (ghusl) of janabah before sleeping and sometimes he would sleep before performing this bath.

Abd Khair says: We were in the mosque when Sayyiduna Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us and asked, "Where is the one who was asking about Witr?" Among us was one who had already prayed one rak‘ah (of Witr), but one rak‘ah remained for him, so he completed that rak‘ah. Then all of us gathered around him. He (Ali) said: "At first, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray Witr at the beginning of the night, then he started praying it in the middle of the night, but later he maintained the performance of Witr at the time close to the break of dawn."
Hadith 2193

It is narrated from a man of Banu Asad, he says: Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us, and people asked him about Witr. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to offer Witr at that time. Then he said: Ibn Tayyah! Say "As-salatu khayrun minan-nawm" or give the adhan or give the iqamah. In another narration, the words are: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came out at the time when the mu’adhdhin gave the adhan for Fajr prayer including the words "As-salatu khayrun minan-nawm." Then the rest of the hadith was mentioned.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray two rak'ahs at a time during the night, and in the last part of the night he would perform one rak'ah of Witr. Then he would stand (to perform the two Sunnah rak'ahs of Fajr), and (he would perform them so quickly) as if the call to prayer (adhan) or the iqamah was being recited in his ear.
Hadith 2195

It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The Maghrib prayer is the witr of the day’s prayers, and you should make the night prayers odd (by performing witr), and the night prayer is in sets of two rak‘ahs, and at the end of the night, witr is one rak‘ah.
Hadith 2197
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Make Witr the last prayer of your night.
Hadith 2198
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever among you thinks that he will not be able to wake up in the last part of the night, then he should perform Witr at the beginning of the night. But whoever thinks that he will wake up in the last part of the night, then he should perform Witr at its end, because the prayer in the last part of the night is attended by the angels and it is the best.
Hadith 2199
Aswad bin Yazid says: I asked Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): At what time do you perform Witr? She said: I do not perform Witr until the muezzins have given the calls to prayer, and they give these calls after the rising of Fajr. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had two muezzins: Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Amr bin Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When Amr gives the call to prayer, you may eat and drink, because he is a blind man, but when Bilal gives the call to prayer, then stop eating and drinking, because Bilal does not give the call until the morning has arrived.
