Ibn Muhairiz Jumahi was in Syria, and he had also met Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). He narrated that a man from the Mukhdaaj of Banu Kinanah informed him that an Ansari man residing in Syria, Abu Muhammad, said that Witr is obligatory. Upon hearing this, the Mukhdaaji went to Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him that Abu Muhammad Ansari is saying that Witr is obligatory. Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Abu Muhammad has lied. I myself heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: There are five prayers; Allah Almighty has made them obligatory upon His servants. Whoever performs them and does not neglect any of them, considering any of their rights insignificant, then for him there is a covenant with Allah that He will admit him to Paradise. But whoever does not perform them, then for him there is no covenant with Allah; if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will forgive him.
