Chapter on the Evidence of Those Who Affirm Prostration of Recitation in the Mufassal Surahs
Hadith 2018
عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَجَدَ بِالنَّجْمِ وَسَجَدَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ إِلَّا رَجُلًا مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ أَخَذَ كَفًّا مِنْ تُرَابٍ فَرَفَعَهُ إِلَى جَبْهَتِهِ فَسَجَدَ عَلَيْهِ، قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ: فَرَأَيْتُهُ بَعْدُ قُتِلَ كَافِرًا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prostration (sajdah) in Surah An-Najm, and the Muslims also performed prostration. However, there was a man from the Quraysh who took a handful of dust and brought it to his forehead and prostrated on it. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw that this man was killed in a state of disbelief.
Hadith 2019
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَرَأَ النَّجْمَ فَسَجَدَ وَسَجَدَ النَّاسُ مَعَهُ إِلَّا رَجُلَيْنِ أَرَادَا الشُّهْرَةَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, recited Surah An-Najm and performed prostration, and the people also performed prostration along with him, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. However, two men did not perform prostration; their intention was to seek fame.
Hadith 2020
عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ أَبِي وَدَاعَةَ السَّهْمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَرَأَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمَكَّةَ سُورَةَ النَّجْمِ فَسَجَدَ وَسَجَدَ مَنْ عِنْدَهُ، فَرَفَعْتُ رَأْسِي وَأَبَيْتُ أَنْ أَسْجُدَ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ أَسْلَمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْمُطَّلِبُ، وَكَانَ بَعْدُ لَا يَسْمَعُ أَحَدًا قَرَأَهَا إِلَّا سَجَدَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mutlib bin Abu Wada‘ah Sahmi, he says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited Surah An-Najm in Makkah and performed sajdah (prostration), and those who were with him also performed sajdah. However, I raised my head and refused to perform sajdah. In fact, Sayyiduna Mutlib (may Allah be pleased with him) had not yet embraced Islam at that time. After accepting Islam, whenever he heard anyone reciting it, he would perform sajdah.
Hadith 2021
((وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) بِنَحْوِهِ وَفِيهِ) فَقَالَ الْمُطَّلِبُ: فَلَا أَدَعُ السُّجُودَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا
(Second chain) Sayyiduna Mutlib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: After accepting Islam, I have never omitted the prostration in this Surah.
Hadith 2022
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَجَدْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي {إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انْشَقَّتْ} وَ{اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ}
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we performed the prostration of recitation (sajda-e-tilawat) with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Surah Inshiqaq and Surah Alaq.
