بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي عَقْصِ الشَّعْرِ وَالْعَبَثِ بِالْحَصَى وَالنَّفْخِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ
Chapter on What is Reported Regarding Tying Hair, Playing with Pebbles, and Blowing in Prayer
Hadith 1896
عَنْ كُرَيْبٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ رَأَى عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ يُصَلِّي وَرَأْسُهُ مَعْقُوصٌ مِنْ وَرَائِهِ فَقَامَ وَرَاءَهُ وَجَعَلَ يَحُلُّهُ وَأَقَرَّ لَهُ الْآخَرُ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقَالَ: مَا لَكَ وَرَأْسِي؟ قَالَ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((إِنَّمَا مَثَلُ هَٰذَا كَمَثَلِ الَّذِي يُصَلِّي وَهُوَ مَكْتُوفٌ))
Kuraib says: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Abdullah bin Harith praying in such a state that his hair was tied at the back of his head. He began to untie his hair, and he (Abdullah bin Harith) allowed him to do so. But after the prayer, he turned to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "What did you have to do with my head?" He replied: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever prays in this manner, his example is like that of a man who performs prayer with his hands tied."
Hadith 1897
عَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ (مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) قَالَ: نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ الرَّجُلُ وَشَعْرُهُ مَعْقُوصٌ
Mawla of the Messenger of Allah, Sayyiduna Abu Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) forbade him from praying in such a state that his hair is tied up.
Hadith 1898
عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمَعَاوِيِّ قَالَ صَلَّيْتُ إِلَى جَنْبِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقَلَبْتُ الْحَصَى، فَقَالَ: لَا تَقْلِبِ الْحَصَى فَإِنَّهُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ وَلَٰكِنْ كَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَفْعَلُ، كَانَ يُحَرِّكُهُ هَٰكَذَا، قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي مَسْحَةً
Ali bin Abdur Rahman Muawi says: I prayed next to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and during the prayer I was turning over pebbles. He said: Do not turn over the pebbles, because doing so is from Satan. However, I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) move them in this way. Imam Abu Abdullah Ahmad said: That is, only once.
Hadith 1899
عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَبْلُغُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِذَا قَامَ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَإِنَّ الرَّحْمَةَ تُوَاجِهُهُ فَلَا يَمْسَحِ الْحَصَى (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ) فَلَا يُحَرِّكِ الْحَصَى، أَوْ لَا يَمَسَّ الْحَصَى))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any of you stands for prayer, he should not clear the pebbles, nor move them, nor touch them, because mercy is before him.
Hadith 1900
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ مَسْحِ الْحَصَى فَقَالَ: ((وَاحِدَةً، وَلَئِنْ تُمْسِكْ عَنْهَا خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنْ مِائَةِ بَدَنَةٍ كُلُّهَا سُودُ الْحَدَقَةِ (زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ) فَإِنْ غَلَبَ أَحَدَكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَلْيَمْسَحْ مَسْحَةً وَاحِدَةً))
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about touching the pebbles. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do it once, and if you refrain even from that, it is better for you than a hundred black-eyed camels. And if Satan overcomes any one of you, then he should clear it once.
Hadith 1901
عَنْ مُعَيْقِيبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قِيلَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَسْحُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ يَعْنِي الْحَصَى فَقَالَ: ((إِنْ كُنْتَ لَا بُدَّ فَاعِلًا فَوَاحِدَةً))
Sayyiduna Mu'ayqib (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about touching pebbles on the place of prostration. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If it is necessary to do so, then do it only once.
Hadith 1902
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فِي الرَّجُلِ يُسَوِّي التُّرَابَ حَيْثُ يَسْجُدُ قَالَ: ((إِنْ كُنْتَ فَاعِلًا فَوَاحِدَةً))
(Second chain) Regarding the person who wipes dust from the place of prostration, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said about him: If you must do it, then do it only once.
Hadith 1903
عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الظُّهْرَ فَآخُذُ قَبْضَةً مِنْ حَصًى فِي كَفِّي لِتَبْرُدَ حَتَّى أَسْجُدَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ شِدَّةِ الْحَرِّ (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ) فَأَجْعَلُهَا فِي يَدِي الْأُخْرَى حَتَّى تَبْرُدَ مِنْ شِدَّةِ الْحَرِّ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I used to perform the Zuhr prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and due to the intensity of the heat, I would take a handful of pebbles in my palm so that they would cool down and then I could prostrate on them. In another narration it is stated: Due to the intensity of the heat, I would transfer them to the other hand so that they would cool down.
Hadith 1904
عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ (زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا ابْنُ أَخٍ لَهَا فَصَلَّى فِي بَيْتِهَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ، فَلَمَّا سَجَدَ نَفَخَ التُّرَابَ، فَقَالَتْ لَهُ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ: ابْنَ أَخِي! لَا تَنْفُخْ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ لِغُلَامٍ لَهُ يُقَالُ لَهُ يَسَارٌ وَنَفَخَ: ((تَرِّبْ وَجْهَكَ لِلَّهِ))
Abu Salih says: I went to the wife of the Messenger, Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), and one of her nephews also came to her. He performed two units of prayer in her house. When he prostrated, he blew on the dust. Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to him: Nephew! Do not blow, because the slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), named Yasar, blew, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: For the sake of Allah, let your face touch the dust.
Hadith 1905
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو (ابْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَصِفُ صَلَاةَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي كُسُوفِ الشَّمْسِ قَالَ … … وَجَعَلَ يَنْفُخُ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَيَبْكِي وَهُوَ سَاجِدٌ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ وَجَعَلَ يَقُولُ: ((رَبِّ لِمَ تُعَذِّبُهُمْ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ، رَبِّ لِمَ تُعَذِّبُنَا وَنَحْنُ نَسْتَغْفِرُكَ)) فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَقَدْ تَجَلَّتِ الشَّمْسُ، الْحَدِيثُ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) described the manner of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings be upon him) prayer at the time of a solar eclipse, saying: … … Then, in the second rak‘ah, while in the state of prostration, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to blow on the ground, weep, and say: “Rabbi, lima tu‘adhdhibuhum wa ana feehim, Rabbi, lima tu‘adhdhibuna wa nahnu nastaghfiruka.” (O my Lord! Why do You punish them while I am among them? O my Lord! Why do You punish us while we are seeking Your forgiveness?)
