Chapter on What is Reported Regarding Tasbih, Tahmid, Takbir, and Seeking Forgiveness After Prayers
Hadith 1861
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَنْ سَبَّحَ اللَّهَ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ وَكَبَّرَ اللَّهَ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، فَتِلْكَ تِسْعٌ وَتِسْعُونَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ تَمَامَ الْمِائَةِ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ، غُفِرَ لَهُ خَطَايَاهُ وَإِنْ كَانَتْ مِثْلَ زَبَدِ الْبَحْرِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever, after every prayer, says thirty-three times "Subhan Allah," thirty-three times "Alhamdulillah," and thirty-three times "Allahu Akbar," these become ninety-nine (words). Then, to complete one hundred (100), he says: "La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahu’l-mulku wa lahu’l-hamdu wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer." His sins will be forgiven, even if they are as much as the foam of the sea.
Hadith 1862
عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي عَائِشَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُمْ أَنَّ أَبَا ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! ذَهَبَ أَصْحَابُ الدُّثُورِ بِالْأُجُورِ يُصَلُّونَ كَمَا نُصَلِّي وَيَصُومُونَ كَمَا نَصُومُ وَلَهُمْ فُضُولُ أَمْوَالِهِمْ يَتَصَدَّقُونَ بِهَا، وَلَيْسَ لَنَا مَا نَتَصَدَّقُ بِهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((أَفَلَا أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى كَلِمَاتٍ إِذَا عَمِلْتَ بِهِنَّ أَدْرَكْتَ مَنْ سَبَقَكَ وَلَا يَلْحَقُكَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَخَذَ بِمِثْلِ عَمَلِكَ؟)) قُلْتُ: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! قَالَ: ((تُكَبِّرُ دُبُرَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَتُسَبِّحُ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَتَحْمَدُ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَتَخْتِمُهَا بِلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ:) تُسَبِّحُ اللَّهَ خَلْفَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَتَحْمَدُ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَتُكَبِّرُ أَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ))
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! The wealthy people have taken all the reward, (in such a way that) they perform prayer, we also perform prayer, and they fast, we also fast, but they have extra wealth with which they give charity, and we do not have enough wealth so that we can also give charity? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Shall I not guide you to such words that when you act upon them, you will reach those who have surpassed, and no one will reach your (status) except the one who does the same as you do? I said: Why not, O Messenger of Allah! You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: After every prayer, you should say Allahu Akbar thirty-three times, Subhan Allah thirty-three times, and Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and complete it with this supplication: La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer. In another narration, it is: After every prayer, you should say Subhan Allah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times.
Hadith 1863
عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: أُمِرْنَا أَنْ نُسَبِّحَ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ وَنَحْمَدَ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ وَنُكَبِّرَ أَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ فَأُتِيَ رَجُلٌ فِي الْمَنَامِ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ: أَمَرَكُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ تُسَبِّحُوا فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ كَذَا وَكَذَا؟ قَالَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ فِي مَنَامِهِ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: فَاجْعَلُوهَا خَمْسًا وَعِشْرِينَ، خَمْسًا وَعِشْرِينَ، وَاجْعَلُوا فِيهَا التَّهْلِيلَ، فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ غَدَا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((فَافْعَلُوا))
Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were commanded that after every prayer we should say Subhan Allah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times. But an Ansari saw a dream, and in the dream he was asked: Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) command you to say Subhan Allah (and the other remembrances) this many times after every prayer? He replied in the dream: Yes. So the one who came in the dream said: Do it twenty-five times each, and add twenty-five times La ilaha illallah. When morning came, he went to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of this dream. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do it like that.
Hadith 1864
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((خَلَّتَانِ مَنْ حَافَظَ عَلَيْهِمَا أَدْخَلَتَاهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَهُمَا يَسِيرٌ وَمَنْ يَعْمَلُ بِهِمَا قَلِيلٌ)) قَالُوا: وَمَا هُمَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ!? قَالَ: ((أَنْ تَحْمَدَ اللَّهَ وَتُكَبِّرَهُ وَتُسَبِّحَهُ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ مَكْتُوبَةٍ عَشْرًا عَشْرًا وَإِذَا أَتَيْتَ إِلَى مَضْجَعِكَ تُسَبِّحُ اللَّهَ وَتُكَبِّرُهُ وَتَحْمَدُهُ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ، فَتِلْكَ خَمْسُونَ وَمِائَتَانِ بِاللِّسَانِ وَأَلْفَانِ وَخَمْسُمِائَةٍ فِي الْمِيزَانِ، فَأَيُّكُمْ يَعْمَلُ فِي الْيَوْمِ وَاللَّيْلَةِ أَلْفَيْنِ وَخَمْسَمِائَةِ سَيِّئَةٍ؟)) قَالُوا: كَيْفَ مَنْ يَعْمَلُ بِهَا قَلِيلٌ؟ قَالَ: ((يَجِيءُ أَحَدُكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَيُذَكِّرُهُ حَاجَةَ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَلَا يَقُولُهَا وَيَأْتِيهِ عِنْدَ مَنَامِهِ فَيُنَوِّمُهُ فَلَا يَقُولُهَا)) قَالَ وَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَعْقِدُهُنَّ بِيَدِهِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There are two qualities; whoever guards them, they will admit him to Paradise. They are easy, but those who act upon them are few. The people asked: O Messenger of Allah! What are those two? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: After every obligatory prayer, say ten times: Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, and SubhanAllah. Then, when you come to your bed, say one hundred times: SubhanAllah, Allahu Akbar, and Alhamdulillah. These will be two hundred and fifty words on the tongue, but on the scale, they will be two thousand five hundred. (Now tell me) who among you commits two thousand five hundred sins in a day and night? The companions said: Then why are those who act upon them few? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Satan comes to you during prayer and starts reminding you of your needs, so he (stands up immediately after the salam and) is unable to say these words. Similarly, he comes (at night) at the time of sleep and makes him sleep before he can say this remembrance, so he is unable to say these words. The narrator says: I saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to count them with his hand.
Hadith 1865
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَقَدْ جَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ هُوَ وَفَاطِمَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا يَطْلُبَانِ خَادِمًا مِنَ السَّبْيِ يَخْفِّفُ عَنْهُمَا بَعْضَ الْعَمَلِ فَأَبَى عَلَيْهِمَا ذَلِكَ فَذَكَرَ قِصَّةً قَالَ: ثُمَّ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَهُمَا: ((أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمَا بِخَيْرٍ مِمَّا سَأَلْتُمَانِي؟)) قَالَا: بَلَى، فَقَالَ: ((كَلِمَاتٌ عَلَّمَنِيهَا جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ، فَقَالَ تُسَبِّحَانِ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ عَشْرًا، وَتَحْمَدَانِ عَشْرًا، وَتُكَبِّرَانِ عَشْرًا، وَإِذَا أَوَيْتُمَا إِلَى فِرَاشِكُمَا فَسَبِّحَا ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَاحْمَدَا ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَكَبِّرَا أَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ)) قَالَ: فَوَ اللَّهِ مَا تَرَكْتُهُنَّ مُنْذُ عَلَّمَنِيهِنَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ الْكَوَّاءِ: وَلَا لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ؟ فَقَالَ: قَاتَلَكُمُ اللَّهُ يَا أَهْلَ الْعِرَاقِ، نَعَمْ وَلَا لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he and Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask for a servant from among the captives, so that the servant could do some of the work and thus lighten their burden a little. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) refused to give them a servant, … the whole story is mentioned … . Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to both of them: Shall I not inform you of something better than what you have asked for? They said: Yes, indeed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There are some words which Jibreel (peace be upon him) taught me. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: After every prayer, say Subhan Allah ten times, Alhamdulillah ten times, and Allahu Akbar ten times. Then when you go to your bed, say Subhan Allah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, since the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me these words, I have never abandoned them. Ibn Kawa said: Not even on the night of Siffin? He said: O people of Iraq! May Allah destroy you, yes, yes, not even on the night of Siffin did I abandon them.
Hadith 1866
عَنْ أَبِي عُمَرَ الصِّينِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ إِذَا نَزَلَ بِهِ ضَيْفٌ قَالَ: يَقُولُ لَهُ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ: مُقِيمٌ فَنُسَرِّحُ أَمْ ظَاعِنٌ فَنَعْلِفُ؟ قَالَ: فَإِنْ قَالَ لَهُ ظَاعِنٌ قَالَ لَهُ: مَا أَجِدُ لَكَ شَيْئًا خَيْرًا مِنْ شَيْءٍ أَمَرَنَا بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! ذَهَبَ الْأَغْنِيَاءُ بِالْأُجُورِ، يَحُجُّونَ وَلَا نَحُجُّ، وَيُجَاهِدُونَ وَلَا نُجَاهِدُ، وَكَذَا وَكَذَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((أَلَا أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَى شَيْءٍ إِنْ أَخَذْتُمْ بِهِ جِئْتُمْ مِنْ أَفْضَلِ مَا يَجِيءُ بِهِ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ، أَنْ تُكَبِّرُوا اللَّهَ أَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَتُسَبِّحُوهُ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ وَتَحْمَدُوهُ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ))
Abu Umar Sini says: When a guest would come to Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him), he would say to him: Will you stay so that we may let your mount graze in the pasture, or will you go so that we may feed it here? When the guest would say that he was about to leave, Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) would say to him: I do not find anything better for you than what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us. The matter is that we said: O Messenger of Allah! All the reward is being taken by the wealthy; they perform Hajj and we cannot perform Hajj, they perform Jihad and we cannot perform Jihad, and they do such and such deeds as well. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Shall I not guide you to something such that if you hold fast to it, you will perform such a superior deed that none among them does such a deed? After every prayer, say thirty-four times "Allahu Akbar," thirty-three times "Subhan Allah," and thirty-three times "Alhamdulillah."
Hadith 1867
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ: نَزَلَ بِأَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ: مُقِيمٌ فَنُسَرِّحُ أَمْ ظَاعِنٌ فَنَعْلِفُ؟ قَالَ: بَلْ ظَاعِنٌ، قَالَ: فَإِنِّي سَأُزَوِّدُكَ زَادًا لَوْ أَجِدُ مَا هُوَ أَفْضَلُ مِنْهُ لَزَوَّدْتُكَ، أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! ذَهَبَ الْأَغْنِيَاءُ بِالدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ، نُصَلِّي وَيُصَلُّونَ وَنَصُومُ وَيَصُومُونَ، وَيَتَصَدَّقُونَ وَلَا نَتَصَدَّقُ، قَالَ: أَلَا أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى شَيْءٍ إِنْ أَنْتَ فَعَلْتَهُ لَمْ يَسْبِقْكَ أَحَدٌ كَانَ قَبْلَكَ وَلَمْ يُدْرِكْكَ أَحَدٌ بَعْدَكَ إِلَّا مَنْ فَعَلَ الَّذِي نَفْعَلُ، دُبُرَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ تَسْبِيحَةً، وَثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ تَحْمِيدَةً، وَأَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ تَكْبِيرَةً
(Second chain of narration) A man came as a guest to Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him). He asked him: “Will you stay so that we may take the mount to the pasture, or will you leave so that we may feed it here?” He replied: “I am going to leave.” Upon hearing this, he said: “Then I will give you provision for the journey, and it is such a provision that if there were anything better than it, I would have given you that. (The details are as follows:) I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! The wealthy people are taking away (all the rewards) of this world and the Hereafter. We pray, and they also pray; we fast, and they also fast; but they give charity and we do not give charity.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Shall I not guide you to something such that if you act upon it, those before you will not surpass you, and those after you will not reach your rank, except those who do as you do? After every prayer, say thirty-three times Subhan Allah, thirty-three times Alhamdulillah, and thirty-four times Allahu Akbar.’
Hadith 1868
عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَنْصَرِفَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ اسْتَغْفَرَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ: ((اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلَامُ وَمِنْكَ السَّلَامُ تَبَارَكْتَ يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ))
Mawla of the Messenger, Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would finish his prayer with salam, he would seek forgiveness three times and then recite this supplication: "Allahumma anta as-salamu wa minka as-salam, tabarakta ya dhal-jalali wal-ikram." (O Allah! You are Peace and from You is peace. You are blessed, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.)
