بَاب حَذْفِ السَّلَامِ وَكَرَاهَةِ الْإِشَارَةِ بِالْيَدِ معه
Chapter on Omitting Salam and the Dislike of Waving the Hand with It
Hadith 1834
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: حَذْفُ السَّلَامِ سُنَّةٌ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The abbreviation of Salam is Sunnah.
Hadith 1835
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا وَرَاءَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُلْنَا: السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ بِأَيْدِينَا يَمِينًا وَشِمَالًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَا بَالُ أَقْوَامٍ يَرْمُونَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ الْخَيْلِ الشُّمْسِ أَلَا يَسْكُنُ أَحَدُكُمْ وَيُشِيرُ بِيَدِهِ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: When we used to pray behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we would gesture with our hands to the right and left while saying "As-Salamu Alaikum." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What is the matter with those people who gesture with their hands in prayer as if they are the tails of unruly horses? Would it not suffice each of you to place his hand on his thigh and turn (his head) to the right and left to give salam?
Hadith 1836
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ: كُنَّا نَقُولُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا سَلَّمْنَا: السَّلَامَ عَلَيْكُمْ يُشِيرُ أَحَدُنَا بِيَدِهِ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَا بَالُ الَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ الْخَيْلِ الشُّمْسِ، أَلَا يَكْفِي أَحَدَكُمْ أَنْ يَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ))
(Second chain) They said: When we followed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in prayer and turned for salam, we would say "Peace be upon you" and each of us would gesture with his hand to the right and to the left. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: What is the matter with those people who gesture with their hands in prayer as if they are the tails of unruly horses? Is it not sufficient for one of you to place his hand on his thigh and then turn to the right and left for salam?
