Hadith 1785
Ibn Ishaq says: Imran bin Abu Anas narrated to me about the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) spreading his left thigh, keeping his right foot upright, placing his right hand on his thigh, and declaring the oneness of the Lord Almighty with his finger during and at the end of prayer, ... ... A resident of Madinah said: I prayed in the mosque of Banu Ghifar, and when I sat, I spread my left thigh and fixed my index finger. The companion of the Messenger of Allah, Khafaf bin Ima’ (may Allah be pleased with him), saw me doing this. When I finished the prayer, he said to me: O my dear son! Why have you fixed your finger like this? I said: What are you objecting to? I have just seen people doing it this way. He said: Indeed, you have acted according to the Sunnah. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray, he would do it this way and declare the oneness of the Lord Almighty, while the polytheists used to say: Muhammad does magic with his finger like this, and they have lied.
Hadith 1786
Tawoos says: We asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) about sitting on the feet. He said: This is Sunnah. We said: We used to consider it a sign of a man's harshness and rudeness. He said: This is the Sunnah of your Prophet.
Hadith 1787
(Second chain) Tawus says: I saw Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) sitting with his feet upright and sitting on them. I said: People consider this manner to be harshness and rudeness. He said: This is the Sunnah of your Prophet.
Hadith 1788
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) describes the manner of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings be upon him) prayer: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite the Tashahhud in every two rak‘ahs. He disliked that a person should spread his arms (in prostration) like a wild beast. He would lay his left foot flat and keep his right foot upright, and he forbade the sitting posture of the devil. He would conclude the prayer with salam.
Hadith 1789
This complete hadith is authentic; there is no reason to declare the mentioned words as irregular, because this is not such an addition by a trustworthy narrator that would negate the narration of other trustworthy narrators. The words of the trustworthy narrators' narration "وَأَشَارَ باِلسَّبَّابَۃِ" and the words of Zaidah bin Qudamah's narration "ثُمَّ رَفَعَ إِصْبَعَہُ فَرَأَیْتُہُ یُحَرِّکُہَا یَدْعُوْبِہَا" have no contradiction whatsoever. Imam Albani has also declared it authentic.
Hadith 1790
Sayyiduna Wa’il bin Hujr Hadhrami (may Allah be pleased with him) describes the manner of the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Then he sat down, spread his left foot, placed his left palm on his thigh and left knee, and raised his right elbow from his left thigh, then closed his fingers and made a circle. And in one narration: he made a circle with the thumb and middle finger and pointed with the index finger. Then when he raised his finger, I saw him moving it and supplicating with it.
Hadith 1791
Nafi' says: When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would sit in prayer, he would place his hands on his knees, point with his finger, and keep his gaze fixed upon it. Then he would narrate that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Verily, this finger is harder upon Satan than iron.
Hadith 1792
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat in Tashahhud, he would place his right hand on his right thigh and his left hand on his left thigh, and he would gesture with his index finger, and his gaze would not go beyond his gesture.
Hadith 1793
Ali bin Abdur Rahman Muawi says: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw me playing with pebbles during prayer. When he finished, he forbade me from doing so and said: Do as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do. I asked: How did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) use to do? He said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would sit in prayer, he would place his right palm on his right thigh and close all the fingers, and point with the finger next to the thumb, and place the left palm on the left thigh.
Hadith 1794
(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would sit, he would place his hands on his knees and raise the index finger of his right hand (next to the thumb) and supplicate with it, and he would spread his left hand on his left knee.
Hadith 1795
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man who had let his hand hang down during prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Do not sit like this; this is the manner of sitting of those who are being punished.
Hadith 1796
(Second chain) They said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade that a man should sit in prayer resting on both his hands.
Hadith 1797
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would be (in the Tashahhud of) two rak'ahs as if he were on a hot stone. I asked: Until he would stand up? He said: Until he would stand up.
Hadith 1798
(Second chain) They said: It was as if the sitting of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in the two rak‘ahs was on a hot stone.
Hadith 1799
Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Uqbah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a man came and sat in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while we were also present with him. He said: O Messenger of Allah! We have recognized how to send salam upon you, (now the question is) when we perform salah, what is the method of sending blessings (salat) upon you? May Allah have mercy on you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent in response (and remained silent for so long that we wished that the man had not asked the question). Finally, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you send blessings upon me, say like this:
Translation: O Allah! Send mercy upon Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent mercy upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. And send blessings upon Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Surely, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.
Hadith 1800
(Second chain) They said: It was asked of you, O Messenger of Allah! How should we send blessings upon you? So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Say like this: O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, and bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim in the worlds. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.
Hadith 1801
(Second chain) It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), who says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us in the gathering of Sa’d bin Ubadah. Sayyiduna Bishr bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: O Messenger of Allah! Allah has commanded us to send blessings upon you, so how should we send blessings upon you? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent until we wished that he had not asked you (peace and blessings be upon him) this question. Then he said: You should say like this: “O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim, and bless Muhammad as You blessed the family of Ibrahim among the worlds; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.” And as for Salam, you already know about it.
Hadith 1802
The companion of the Messenger, Sayyiduna Fadala bin Ubaid (may Allah be pleased with him), says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man supplicating in prayer, while he neither mentioned Allah Almighty nor sent blessings upon you (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: This servant has been hasty. Then you (peace and blessings be upon him) called him and said to him and to others: When any of you prays, he should begin by praising and glorifying Allah Almighty, then send blessings upon the Prophet, then supplicate for whatever he wishes.
Hadith 1803
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka’b bin ‘Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man said to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! We have learned how to send salutations (salam) upon you, now the question is, what is the method of sending blessings (durood)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Say like this: “O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.”
Hadith 1804
Ibn Abi Layla says: I met Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and he said: Shall I not give you a gift? (And that is) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us, and we said: O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, we have learned how to send peace upon you, now what is the way to send blessings (salat)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You should say like this: "O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed the family of Ibrahim, indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: When this verse {إِنَّ اللَّہَ وَمَلاَئِکَتَہُ یُصَلُّوْنَ عَلَی النَّبِیِّ} was revealed, the people said: O Messenger of Allah! How should we send blessings upon you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You should say: "O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious." He says: While reciting this salutation, we would also say these words: "And upon us along with them." Yazid, the narrator, says: I could not understand whether these last words were added by Ibn Abi Layla himself or if Sayyiduna Ka'b had actually narrated them.
