Hadith 1716
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِذَا سَجَدَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يَبْرُكْ كَمَا يَبْرُكُ الْجَمَلُ، وَلْيَضَعْ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ رَكْبَتَيْهِ))
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you performs prostration, he should not sit like a camel sits, rather he should place his hands first and then his knees.
Hadith 1717
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ: إِنَّ الْيَدَيْنِ تَسْجُدَانِ كَمَا يَسْجُدُ الْوَجْهُ فَإِذَا وَضَعَ أَحَدُكُمْ وَجْهَهُ فَلْيَضَعْ يَدَيْهِ وَإِذَا رَفَعَهُ فَلْيَرْفَعْهُمَا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Verily, the hands also prostrate just as the face does, therefore when any one of you places his face for prostration, he should also place his hands, and when he lifts it, he should also lift them.
Hadith 1718
عَنِ ابْنِ بُحَيْنَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا سَجَدَ يُجَنِّحُ فِي سُجُودِهِ حَتَّى يُرَى وَضَحُ إِبْطَيْهِ (وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا صَلَّى فَرَّجَ حَتَّى يَبْدُوَ بَيَاضُ إِبْطَيْهِ
Sayyiduna Ibn Buhaina (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prostration, he would keep his arms so far from his sides that the whiteness of his armpits became visible.
Hadith 1719
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا صَلَّى فَرَّجَ حَتَّى يَبْدُوَ بَيَاضُ إِبْطَيْهِ
The wording of the hadith narrated through (the second chain) is as follows: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed prayer, he would separate his arms from his sides to the extent that the whiteness of his armpits became visible.
Hadith 1720
عَنْ أَبِي حُمَيْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَصِفُ صَلَاةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ثُمَّ هَوَى سَاجِدًا وَقَالَ ((اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ)) ثُمَّ جَافَى وَفَتَحَ عَضُدَيْهِ عَنْ بَطْنِهِ وَفَتَحَ أَصَابِعَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثُمَّ ثَنَى رِجْلَهُ الْيُسْرَى وَقَعَدَ عَلَيْهَا وَاعْتَدَلَ حَتَّى رَجَعَ كُلُّ عَظْمٍ فِي مَوْضِعِهِ
Sayyiduna Abu Humayd Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) describes the way the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prayer: He said, “Then he bowed down for prostration saying ‘Allahu Akbar’, then he spread himself (in prostration), and kept his arms away from his sides and placed his toes (of the feet) bent towards the Qiblah. (Then he rose and) folded his (left) foot and sat upon it and became upright until every bone returned to its place, … .”
Hadith 1721
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((اعْتَدِلُوا فِي سُجُودِكُمْ وَلَا يَفْتَرِشْ أَحَدُكُمْ ذِرَاعَيْهِ افْتِرَاشَ الْكَلْبِ، أَتِمُّوا الرُّكُوعَ وَالسُّجُودَ، فَوَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأَرَاكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِي أَوْ مِنْ بَعْدِ ظَهْرِي إِذَا رَكَعْتُمْ وَإِذَا سَجَدْتُمْ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Maintain moderation in prostrations, no person should spread his arms like a dog, complete the bowing and prostration, by Allah! When you bow and prostrate, I see you from behind my back.
Hadith 1722
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِذَا سَجَدَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَعْتَدِلْ وَلَا يَفْتَرِشْ ذِرَاعَيْهِ افْتِرَاشَ الْكَلْبِ))
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you performs prostration, he should be moderate and should not spread his arms like a dog.
Hadith 1723
عَنْ شُعْبَةَ قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ مَوْلَاكَ إِذَا سَحَدَ وَضَعَ جَبْهَتَهُ وَذِرَاعَيْهِ وَصَدْرَهُ بِالْأَرْضِ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: مَا يَحْمِلُكَ عَلَى مَا تَصْنَعُ؟ قَالَ: التَّوَاضُعُ، قَالَ: هَٰكَذَا رِبْضَةُ الْكَلْبِ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا سَجَدَ رُؤِيَ بَيَاضُ إِبْطَيْهِ
Shu’bah says: A man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: When your servant prostrates, he places his forehead, arms, and chest on the ground. He (Ibn Abbas) asked him: What makes you do this? He replied: I do it out of humility. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This is the posture of a dog. I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he prostrated, the whiteness of his armpits would become visible.
Hadith 1724
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: تَدَبَّرْتُ صَلَاةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَرَأَيْتُهُ مُخَوِّيًا فَرَأَيْتُ بَيَاضَ إِبْطَيْهِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I closely observed the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I saw that he would lift his stomach away from the ground, and I also saw the whiteness of his armpits.
Hadith 1725
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ بَيَاضَ كَشْحِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ سَاجِدٌ
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw the whiteness of the side of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he was in prostration.
Hadith 1726
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا سَجَدَ رُؤِيَ أَوْ رَأَيْتُ بَيَاضَ إِبْطَيْهِ
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prostration, the whiteness of his armpits could be seen.
Hadith 1727
عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَقْرَمَ الْخُزَاعِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: كُنْتُ مَعَ أَبِي أَقْرَمَ بِالْقَاعِ (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ بِالْقَاعِ مِنْ نَمِرَةَ) قَالَ: فَمَرَّ بِنَا رَكْبٌ فَأَنَاخُوا بِنَاحِيَةِ الطَّرِيقِ فَقَالَ لِي أَبِي: أَيْ بُنَيَّ! كُنْ فِي بَهْمِكَ حَتَّى آتِيَ هَؤُلَاءِ الْقَوْمَ وَأُسَائِلَهُمْ، قَالَ: فَخَرَجَ وَخَرَجْتُ فِي أَثَرِهِ فَإِذَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: فَحَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَصَلَّيْتُ مَعَهُ فَكُنْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَى عُفْرَتَيْ إِبْطَيْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كُلَّمَا سَجَدَ
Abdullah bin Aqram says: I was with my father in the plain of Namira, a caravan passed by us, then they made their camels sit down on one side of the road. My father said to me: O my dear son! Stay with your animals, I will go to these people and ask them some questions. So he went, and I also followed behind him. They were the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Meanwhile, the time for prayer came and I prayed with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Whenever he, peace and blessings be upon him, prostrated, I would see the unblemished whiteness of his armpits.
Hadith 1728
عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ وَصَفَ السُّجُودَ قَالَ: فَبَسَطَ كَفَّيْهِ وَرَفَعَ عَجِيزَتَهُ وَخَوَّى وَقَالَ هَٰكَذَا سَجَدَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Abu Ishaq says: Sayyiduna Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) described the manner of prostration (sajdah) (he performed sajdah and) spread his palms, raised the back part, and kept his stomach elevated from the ground, and then said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed sajdah in this manner.
Hadith 1729
عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا سَجَدَ جَافَى حَتَّى يُرَى مَنْ خَلْفَهُ بَيَاضَ إِبْطَيْهِ
The wife of the Messenger, Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prostration, he would spread (his arms) so much that whoever was behind him could see the whiteness of his armpits.
Hadith 1730
عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِذَا سَجَدْتَ فَضَعْ كَفَّيْكَ وَارْفَعْ مِرْفَقَيْكَ))
Sayyiduna Bara’ bin ‘Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you perform prostration, place your palms on the ground and raise your elbows.
Hadith 1731
عَنْ وَائِلِ بْنِ حُجْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْجُدُ عَلَى أَنْفِهِ مَعَ جَبْهَتِهِ
Sayyiduna Wa’il bin Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrating on his forehead along with his nose.
Hadith 1732
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا سَجَدَ وَضَعَ أَنْفَهُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ
(Second chain) They said: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when he performed prostration, he would place his nose on the ground.
Hadith 1733
وَعَنْهُ أَيْضًا أَنَّهُ رَأَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْجُدُ بَيْنَ كَفَّيْهِ (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ) وَيَدَاهُ قَرِيبَتَانِ مِنْ أُذُنَيْهِ
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Wa'il bin Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrating between his palms. And in another narration, it is mentioned that his hands were near his ears.
Hadith 1734
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ: ((وَإِذَا سَجَدْتَ فَأَمْكِنْ جَبْهَتَكَ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ حَتَّى تَجِدَ حَجْمَ الْأَرْضِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to a man: When you prostrate, place your forehead on the ground in such a way that you feel the solidity of the earth.
