Hadith 1649
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would recite, he would keep his voice low; Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would recite in a loud voice, and Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him), when he would recite, would read some from this surah and some from that surah. When this was reported to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): Why do you recite quietly? He said: I am presenting to the One with whom I am whispering. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): Why do you recite in a loud voice? He said: I frighten the devil and awaken the one who is sleeping lightly. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him): You recite some from this surah and some from that surah, why do you do so? He said: Have you ever heard me include in this Qur’an any speech that is not from it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No. He said: Then all the speech is good, (so I recite from wherever I wish, as needed).
Hadith 1650
Qatadah says: I asked Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) about the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: When reciting, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would prolong his voice considerably.
Hadith 1651
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was such (loud) that when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the room, those in the courtyard could hear it.
Hadith 1652
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ عُمَرَ (ح) ابْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَمِيلِ وَأَبِي عَامِرِ، حَدَّثَنَا نَافِعٌ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَزْوَاجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ نَافِعٌ: أُرَاهَا حَفْصَةَ أَنَّهَا سُئِلَتْ عَنْ قِرَاءَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ: إِنَّكُمْ لَا تَسْتَطِيعُونَهَا، قَالَ: فَقِيلَ لَهَا: أَخْبِرِينَا بِهَا، قَالَتْ: فَقَرَأَتْ قِرَاءَةً تَرَسَّلَتْ فِيهَا، قَالَ أَبُو عَامِرٍ: قَالَ نَافِعٌ: فَحَكَى لَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} ثُمَّ قَطَعَ، {الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ}، ثُمَّ قَطَعَ، {مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ}
A wife of the Prophet, most likely Sayyida Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about his recitation. She said: "You do not have the ability for it." Someone said to her: "At least tell us about it." In response, she recited and did so with pauses. Ibn Abi Mulayka narrated it as follows: She recited {اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰہِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِیْنَ}, then paused, then recited {اَلرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ} and stopped at it, then recited {مَالِکِ یَوْمِ الدَّیِْن}.
Hadith 1653
Sayyida Umm Hani bint Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I used to hear the recitation of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the last third of the night, while I would be on the roof of my hut and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would be near the Ka'bah.
Hadith 1654
Sayyiduna Abu Laila (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting during prayer, and it was not an obligatory prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by the mention of Paradise and the Fire, he said: "I seek refuge with Allah from the Fire. Woe or destruction is for the people of the Fire."
Hadith 1655
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would pass by a verse of mercy, he would ask (for it); when he would pass by a verse mentioning punishment, he would seek refuge; and when he would recite a verse in which the transcendence of Allah Almighty is mentioned, he would declare His glory.
