بَابُ وُجُوبِ قِرَاءَةِ الْفَاتِحَةِ
Chapter on the Obligation of Reciting Al-Fatiha
Hadith 1569
عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ رِوَايَةً تَبْلُغُ بِهَا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever does not recite Surah Al-Fatihah, his prayer is not valid.
Hadith 1570
(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ فَصَاعِدًا
(Second chain of narration) They say that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: There is no prayer for the one who does not recite Umm al-Qur'an, and more than that as well.
Hadith 1571
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَتْ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((مَنْ صَلَّى صَلَاةً لَا يَقْرَأْ فِيهَا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ فَهِيَ خِدَاجٌ))
The wife of the Messenger, Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever offers such a prayer in which he does not recite Umm al-Qur'an, then that prayer will be incomplete.
Hadith 1572
عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَاةَ الْغَدَاةِ فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْقِرَاءَةُ، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ: ((إِنِّي لَأَرَاكُمْ تَقْرَؤُنَ وَرَاءَ إِمَامِكُمْ؟)) قُلْنَا: نَعَمْ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّا لَنَفْعَلُ هَٰذَا، قَالَ: ((فَلَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِهَا))
Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Fajr prayer, and recitation became difficult for him. So, after finishing, he asked: I think you recite behind your Imam? We said: Yes! By Allah, O Messenger of Allah! Without any doubt, we do so. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not do so (i.e., do not recite behind me) except for Surah Al-Fatihah, because whoever does not recite it, his prayer is not valid.
Hadith 1573
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((كُلُّ صَلَاةٍ لَا يُقْرَأْ فِيهَا فَهِيَ خِدَاجٌ ثُمَّ هِيَ خِدَاجٌ ثُمَّ هِيَ خِدَاجٌ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Every prayer in which recitation is not done is incomplete, then it is incomplete, then it is incomplete.
Hadith 1574
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ فَيُنَادِيَ أَنْ ((لَا صَلَاةَ إِلَّا بِقِرَاءَةِ فَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ فَمَا زَادَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, commanded him to go out and announce that there is no prayer except with Surah Al-Fatihah, and with more than that as well.
Hadith 1575
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ كَانُوا يَفْتَتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِـ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ}
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar, and Sayyiduna Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, used to begin the recitation from {اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰہِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِیْنَ}.
Hadith 1576
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَوَادَةَ الْقُشَيْرِيِّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَكَانَ أَبُوهُ أَسِيرًا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((لَا تُقْبَلُ صَلَاةٌ لَا يُقْرَأْ فِيهَا بِأُمِّ الْكِتَابِ))
Abdullah bin Sawadah Qushayri says: A Bedouin man narrated to me from his father, who was a captive with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he heard Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: That prayer is not accepted in which the recitation of Umm al-Kitab (that is, Surah al-Fatihah) is not done.
