بَابُ دَفْعِ الْمَارِّ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ الْمُصَلِّي مِنْ آدَمِيٍّ وَغَيْرِهِ
Chapter on Preventing Someone from Passing in Front of the Worshipper, Whether Human or Animal
Hadith 1483
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((إِذَا كَانَ أَحَدُكُمْ يُصَلِّي فَلَا يَدَعْ أَحَدًا يَمُرُّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ، فَإِنْ أَبَى فَلْيُقَاتِلْهُ فَإِنَّ مَعَهُ الْقَرِينَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you is performing prayer, he should not allow anyone to pass in front of him. If someone refuses (to stop), then he should fight him, for indeed there is a devil with him.
Hadith 1484
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِذَا كَانَ أَحَدُكُمْ يُصَلِّي فَلَا يَدَعْ أَحَدًا يَمُرُّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ، وَلْيَدْرَأْهُ مَا اسْتَطَاعَ، فَإِنْ أَبَى فَلْيُقَاتِلْهُ، فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ شَيْطَانٌ))
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any one of you is performing prayer, he should not allow anyone to pass in front of him, and he should stop him as much as he can. If that person refuses (to stop), then he should fight him, for he is a devil.
Hadith 1485
عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ صَاحِبِ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ عَطَاءَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ اللَّيْثِيَّ قَائِمًا يُصَلِّي مُعْتَمًّا بِعِمَامَةٍ سَوْدَاءَ مُرْخِي طَرَفَيْهَا مِنْ خَلْفٍ مُصْفَرِّ اللَّحْيَةِ، فَذَهَبْتُ أَمُرُّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَرَدَّنِي ثُمَّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيُّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَامَ فَصَلَّى صَلَاةَ الصُّبْحِ وَهُوَ خَلْفَهُ فَقَرَأْ فَالْتَبَسَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْقِرَاءَةُ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ قَالَ: ((لَوْ رَأَيْتُمُونِي وَإِبْلِيسَ فَأَهْوَيْتُ بِيَدِي فَمَا زِلْتُ أَخْنُقُهُ حَتَّى وَجَدْتُّ بَرْدَ لُعَابِهِ بَيْنَ إِصْبَعَيَّ هَاتَيْنِ، الْإِبْهَامِ وَالَّتِي تَلِيهَا وَلَوْلَا دَعْوَةُ أَخِي سُلَيْمَانَ لَأَصْبَحَ مَرْبُوطًا بِسَارِيَةٍ مِنْ سَوَارِي الْمَسْجِدِ يَتَلَاعَبُ بِهِ صِبْيَانُ الْمَدِينَةِ فَمَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ لَا يَحُولَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْقِبْلَةِ أَحَدٌ فَلْيَفْعَلْ))
Abu Ubaid, the companion of Sulaiman, says: I saw Ata bin Yazid Laithi, he was performing prayer, he had tied a black turban and its end was hanging behind, and he had dyed his beard yellow. I was about to pass in front of him but he stopped me, then said: Sayyiduna Abu Saeed (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was performing the morning prayer, and he (Abu Saeed) was also following him. The Prophet recited (Qur'an), but the recitation became confused for him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he said: If only you had seen me and Iblis; I bent down my hand (and caught him, then) kept throttling him until I felt the coolness of his saliva between these two fingers, that is, the thumb and the one next to it. And if it had not been for the supplication of my brother Sulaiman (peace be upon him), he would have seen the morning in such a state that he would have been tied to a pillar of the mosque and the children of Madinah would have been playing with him. Therefore, whoever among you has the ability that (during his prayer) nothing comes between him and the qiblah, then he should do so.
Hadith 1486
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ وَأَبِي بَشِيرٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى بِهِمْ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَمَرَّتْ امْرَأَةٌ بِالْبَطْحَاءِ فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ تَأْخَّرِي، فَرَجَعَتْ حَتَّى صَلَّى ثُمَّ مَرَّتْ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid and Abu Bishr Ansari (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading them in prayer one day at the place of Batha. A woman wanted to pass by, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to her to go back, so she turned back. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, then she passed by.
Hadith 1487
عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ عَنْ أُمِّهِ عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي فِي حُجْرَةِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ فَمَرَّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَوْ عُمَرُ فَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ هَكَذَا قَالَ: فَرَجَعَ، قَالَ: فَمَرَّتْ ابْنَةُ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ فَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ هَكَذَا، قَالَ: فَمَضَتْ، فَلَمَّا صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((هُنَّ أَغْلَبُ))
Muhammad bin Qais narrates from his mother, and she from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying in the chamber of Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her). Abdullah or Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) began to pass in front of him, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his hand (for them to go back), and they went back. Then the daughter of Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) began to pass, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his hand in the same way to stop her, but she passed by. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he said: These women are more dominant in opposing (commands).
Hadith 1488
عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌ بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ فَمَنَعْتُهُ فَأَبَى، فَسَأَلْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ: لَا يَضُرُّكَ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي
Ibrahim bin Sa’d narrates from his father, and he from his father, who says: I was offering prayer when a man passed in front of me. I tried to stop him, but he refused to stop. Then I asked Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: My nephew! He will not harm you.
Hadith 1489
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي فَجَاءَتْ جَارِيَتَانِ حَتَّى قَامَتَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ عِنْدَ رَأْسِهِ فَنَحَّاهُمَا وَأَوْمَأَ بِيَدَيْهِ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ يَسَارِهِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying when two girls came and stood in front of him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) moved them aside and gestured to his right and left.
Hadith 1490
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِبَعْضِ أَعْلَى الْوَادِي نُرِيدُ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ، قَدْ قَامَ وَقُمْنَا إِذْ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا حِمَارٌ مِنْ شَعْبِ أَبِي دُبٍّ شَعْبِ أَبِي مُوسَى فَأَمْسَكَ النَّبِيُّ فَلَمْ يُكَبِّرْ وَأَجْرَى إِلَيْهِ يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ زَمْعَةَ حَتَّى رَدَّهُ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Once we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the upper part of a valley. We wanted to pray, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and we also stood up. But suddenly, from the Sha'b Abi Dabb, that is, the Sha'b Abi Musa, a donkey came out towards us. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped and did not say the takbir. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Ya'qub bin Zam'ah towards it until he turned it back.
Hadith 1491
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى بِهِمْ إِلَى جَدْرٍ اتَّخَذَهُ قِبْلَةً فَأَقْبَلَتْ بَهْمَةٌ تَمُرُّ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَمَا زَالَ يُدَارِئُهَا وَيَدْنُو مِنَ الْجَدْرِ حَتَّى نَظَرْتُ إِلَى بَطْنِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ لَصِقَ بِالْجِدَارِ وَمَرَّتْ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading them in prayer, taking a wall as the qiblah. A kid (young goat) tried to pass in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he kept preventing it and kept moving closer to the wall until his stomach touched the wall, and the kid passed behind him.
Hadith 1492
عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا سَجَدَ وَثَمَّ بَهْمَةٌ أَرَادَتْ أَنْ تَمُرَّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ تَجَافَى
The wife of the Messenger, Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), says that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would prostrate and there was a kid (young goat) that wanted to pass in front of him, it would pass. He (in prostration) would keep his hands away from his sides.
Hadith 1493
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ثَنَا شُعْبَةُ وَحَجَّاجٌ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ الْجَزَّارِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُصَلِّي فَجَعَلَ جَدْيٌ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَمُرَّ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَجَعَلَ يَتَقَدَّمُ وَيَتَأَخَّرُ، قَالَ حَجَّاجٌ: يَتَقِيْهِ وَيَتَأَخَّرُ حَتَّى يُرَى وَرَاءَ الْجَدْيِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was offering prayer when a kid goat began to pass in front of him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) started moving forward and backward to avoid it. Hajjaj said: He was avoiding it, and while avoiding it, he moved backward until he could see behind the kid goat.
