بَابُ اسْتِحْبَابِ السُّتْرَةِ لِلْمُصَلِّي وَالدُّنُوِّ مِنْهَا وَمِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ تَكُونُ وَأَيْنَ تَكُونُ مِنْ الْمُصَلَّى

Hadith 1473
Under this chapter, the following sub-chapters and hadiths have been mentioned.
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَجْعَلْ تِلْقَاءَ وَجْهِهِ شَيْئًا فَإِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا فَلْيَنْصِبْ عَصًا، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ مَعَهُ عَصًا فَلْيَخُطَّ خَطًّا وَلَا يَضُرُّهُ مَا مَرَّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that Abul Qasim, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any one of you performs prayer, he should place something in front of him. If he does not find anything, he should fix a staff. And if he does not have a staff, he should draw a line in front of him, because after doing so, nothing passing in front of him will harm him.
Hadith 1474
عَنْ سَبْرَةَ بْنِ مَعْبَدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَسْتَتِرْ لِصَلَاتِهِ وَلَوْ بِسَهْمٍ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sabrah bin Ma’bad (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any of you performs prayer, he should place a sutrah for his prayer, even if it is an arrow.
Hadith 1475
عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي فَيَعْرِضُ الْبَعِيرَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْقِبْلَةِ وَقَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ: سَأَلْتُ نَافِعًا فَقُلْتُ: إِذَا ذَهَبَتِ الْإِبِلُ كَيْفَ كَانَ يَصْنَعُ ابْنُ عُمَرَ؟ قَالَ: كَانَ يَعْرِضُ مُؤَخَّرَةَ الرَّحْلِ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْقِبْلَةِ (وَفِي لَفْظٍ) قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَعْرِضُ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ وَيُصَلِّي إِلَيْهَا
Ubaidullah bin Nafi narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would place a camel between himself and the qiblah (i.e., in front of him) and perform prayer. Ubaidullah says: I asked Nafi, "When the camel would move away, what would Sayyiduna Ibn Umar do?" He replied: Then he would place the rear wooden part of the saddle in front of him. And in another narration, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would be in front of his mount and would pray facing it.
Hadith 1476
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ تُرْكَزُ لَهُ الْحَرْبَةُ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ فَيُصَلِّي إِلَيْهَا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that on both Eid prayers, a spear would be fixed for the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would offer prayer facing towards it.
Hadith 1477
عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: كُنَّا نُصَلِّي وَالدَّوَابُّ تَمُرُّ بَيْنَ أَيْدِينَا فَذَكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: ((مِثْلُ مُؤَخَّرَةِ الرَّحْلِ تَكُونُ بَيْنَ يَدِي أَحَدِكُمْ ثُمَّ لَا يَضُرُّهُ مَا مَرَّ عَلَيْهِ)) وَقَالَ عُمَرُ مَرَّةً: ((بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ))
Sayyiduna Talha bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We used to be praying and cattle would pass in front of us. When we mentioned this matter before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: When any of you has something like the back part of a saddle in front of him, then whatever passes in front does not cause harm.
Hadith 1478
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: رُكِزَتِ الْعَنَزَةُ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِعَرَفَاتٍ فَصَلَّى إِلَيْهَا وَالْحِمَارُ يَمُرُّ مِنْ وَرَاءِ الْعَنَزَةِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, says that at Arafat, a spear was fixed in front of the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He, peace and blessings be upon him, faced towards it and performed prayer, and a donkey kept passing behind the spear.
Hadith 1479
عَنْ عَوْنِ بْنِ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالْأَبْطَحِ (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ بِالْبَطْحَاءِ) الظُّهْرَ وَالْعَصْرَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَبَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ عَنَزَةٌ قَدْ أَقَامَهَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ يَمُرُّ مِنْ وَرَائِهَا النَّاسُ وَالْحِمَارُ وَالْمَرْأَةُ (زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ) قَالَ: قِيلَ لَهُ: مِثْلُ مَنْ أَنْتَ يَوْمَئِذٍ؟ قَالَ: أَبْرِي النَّبْلِ وَأَرِيشُهَا
Sayyiduna Abu Hujayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Zuhr and Asr prayers, two rak‘ahs each, at Abtah or Batha. In front of him was a spear which he had placed before himself, and behind it people, donkeys, and women kept passing by. In another narration it is mentioned: He was asked, "What were you doing at that time?" He replied, "I was straightening arrows and attaching feathers to them."
Hadith 1480
عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى سُتْرَةٍ فَلْيَدْنُ مِنْهَا لَا يَقْطَعُ الشَّيْطَانُ عَلَيْهِ صَلَاتَهُ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any of you prays towards a sutrah, he should come close to it so that Satan does not cut off his prayer.
Hadith 1481
عَنْ ضُبَاعَةَ بِنْتِ الْمِقْدَادِ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ عَنْ أَبِيهَا أَنَّهُ قَالَ: مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى إِلَى عَمُودٍ وَلَا عُودٍ وَلَا شَجَرَةٍ إِلَّا جَعَلَهُ عَلَى حَاجِبِهِ الْأَيْمَنِ أَوِ الْأَيْسَرِ وَلَا يَصْمُدُ لَهُ صَمْدًا
Sayyiduna Miqdad bin Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I did not see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ever pray facing directly towards a pillar, wood, or tree; rather, he would turn it to his right or left side and would not stand directly in front of it.
Hadith 1482
عَنْ بِلَالٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَقَدْ سَأَلَهُ ابْنُ عُمَرَ عَنْ مَا صَنَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عِنْدَ دُخُولِهِ الْكَعْبَةِ؟ قَالَ: تَرَكَ عَمُودَيْنِ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَمُودًا عَنْ يَسَارِهِ وَثَلَاثَةَ أَعْمِدَةٍ خَلْفَهُ ثُمَّ صَلَّى وَبَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْقِبْلَةِ ثَلَاثَةُ أَذْرُعٍ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did after entering the Ka'bah. He replied: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed in such a way that he kept two pillars to his right, one to his left, and three behind him, while there was a distance of three hand spans between the Qiblah and himself.
