It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that Abul Qasim, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any one of you performs prayer, he should place something in front of him. If he does not find anything, he should fix a staff. And if he does not have a staff, he should draw a line in front of him, because after doing so, nothing passing in front of him will harm him.

Ubaidullah bin Nafi narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would place a camel between himself and the qiblah (i.e., in front of him) and perform prayer. Ubaidullah says: I asked Nafi, "When the camel would move away, what would Sayyiduna Ibn Umar do?" He replied: Then he would place the rear wooden part of the saddle in front of him. And in another narration, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would be in front of his mount and would pray facing it.

When we mentioned this matter before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: When any of you has something like the back part of a saddle in front of him, then whatever passes in front does not cause harm.

Sayyiduna Abu Hujayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Zuhr and Asr prayers, two rak‘ahs each, at Abtah or Batha. In front of him was a spear which he had placed before himself, and behind it people, donkeys, and women kept passing by. In another narration it is mentioned: He was asked, "What were you doing at that time?" He replied, "I was straightening arrows and attaching feathers to them."

Sayyiduna Miqdad bin Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I did not see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ever pray facing directly towards a pillar, wood, or tree; rather, he would turn it to his right or left side and would not stand directly in front of it.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did after entering the Ka'bah. He replied: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed in such a way that he kept two pillars to his right, one to his left, and three behind him, while there was a distance of three hand spans between the Qiblah and himself.
