Hadith 1402
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: A man should not perform prayer in a single garment in such a way that none of it covers his shoulders.
Hadith 1403
And it is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any one of you prays in a single garment, he should throw its two ends over his shoulders in opposite directions.
Hadith 1404
Sayyiduna Kaysan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) coming out from the place of kitchens and going to the place of the well. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing only an izar (lower garment) and did not have an upper sheet on. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw some slaves praying near the place of the well, so he also took off his izar and used it as a covering, and then performed two rak‘ahs. I do not know whether it was Zuhr or ‘Asr.
Hadith 1405
(Second Chain) Abdur Rahman bin Kaysan says: I asked my father, Sayyiduna Kaysan (may Allah be pleased with him), what did you find from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: I saw him near the well of Banu Muti’, called Bir Aliya, wrapped in a cloth, performing either the Zuhr or Asr prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed that prayer as two rak’ahs.
Hadith 1406
Saeed bin Harith says: We entered upon Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was wrapped in a single garment and performing prayer, even though his upper sheet was so close to him that if he wanted to grab it, he could have. Anyway, when he finished the prayer with salam, we asked him about this clothing, so he said: I have done this only so that fools like you may see me and spread talk about such a concession for Jabir which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had permitted. Then Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, and when I came to him at night during the journey, he was praying in a single garment, and I too had only one garment, so I wrapped it around myself and stood on his side. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Jabir! What is this wrapping? When you pray in such a state that you have only one garment, if it is wide, then cover yourself with it, and if the garment is tight, then tie it as an izar (lower garment) only.
Hadith 1407
Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil says that I said to Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead us in prayer in the manner in which you saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performing the prayer. So he led us in prayer wearing a single garment, while his garment was tied below the area of the chest.
Hadith 1408
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw men in prayer following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), tying their lower garments around their necks like children because their izars were tight. Someone said: O group of women! Do not raise your heads until the men have raised theirs.
Hadith 1409
It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Hani bint Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with her) that she saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Makkah on the day of conquest, having draped the two ends of a cloth over his shoulders in opposite directions, performing eight rak‘ahs. And in another narration: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed eight rak‘ahs of the Duha (forenoon) prayer.
