بَابُ النَّهْيِ عَنِ اتِّخَاذِ قُبُورِ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ مَسَاجِدَ لِلتَّبَرُّكِ وَالتَّعْظِيمِ
Chapter on the Prohibition of Taking the Graves of Prophets and Righteous as Mosques for Blessing and Veneration
Hadith 1375
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَعَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّهُمَا قَالَا: لَمَّا نُزِلَ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ طَفِقَ يُلْقِي خَمِيصَتَهُ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ فَإِذَا اغْتَمَّ رَفَعْنَاهَا عَنْهُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: ((لَعَنَ اللَّهُ الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَى، اتَّخَذُوا قُبُورَ أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ مَسَاجِدَ)) تَقُولُ عَائِشَةُ: يُحَذِّرُهُمْ مِثْلَ الَّذِي صَنَعُوا
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas and Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrate that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was near death, he would cover his face with a sheet, and whenever he felt difficulty in breathing, we would lift the sheet from his face. In this state, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah curse the Jews and Christians; they made the graves of their prophets into places of worship." Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: (In fact) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was warning people against doing what they did.
Hadith 1376
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ وَأُمَّ سَلَمَةَ ذَكَرَتَا كَنِيسَةً رَأَيْنَهَا بِالْحَبَشَةِ (وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ تَذَاكَرُوا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَرَضِهِ فَذَكَرَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ وَأُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ كَنِيسَةً رَأَيْنَهَا فِي أَرْضِ الْحَبَشَةِ) فِيهَا تَصَاوِيرُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((إِنَّ أُولَئِكَ إِذَا كَانَ فِيهِمُ الرَّجُلُ الصَّالِحُ فَمَاتَ بَنَوْا عَلَى قَبْرِهِ مَسْجِدًا وَصَوَّرُوا فِيهِ تِلْكَ الصُّورَ، أُولَئِكَ شِرَارُ الْخَلْقِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ))
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyida Umm Habiba and Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with them both) mentioned a church which they had seen in Abyssinia, and in another narration the words are as follows: During the illness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), people were talking to each other in his presence, so Sayyida Umm Salama and Sayyida Umm Habiba (may Allah be pleased with them both) mentioned a church which they had seen in Abyssinia, in which there were pictures. Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The condition of these people was that when a righteous man among them died, they would build a mosque over his grave and make these pictures in it. On the Day of Resurrection, these people will be the worst of creation in the sight of Allah Almighty.
Hadith 1377
وَعَنْهَا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَمِيصَةٌ سَوْدَاءُ حِينَ اشْتَدَّ بِهِ وَجَعُهُ، قَالَتْ: فَهُوَ يَضَعُهَا مَرَّةً عَلَى وَجْهِهِ وَمَرَّةً يَكْشِفُهَا عَنْهُ وَيَقُولُ: ((قَاتَلَ اللَّهُ قَوْمًا اتَّخَذُوا قُبُورَ أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ مَسَاجِدَ)) يُحَرِّمُ ذَلِكَ عَلَى أُمَّتِهِ
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had a black cloak. When his illness intensified, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes cover his face with it and sometimes remove it from his face, and he would say: May Allah destroy those people who made the graves of their prophets into mosques. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was declaring this act forbidden for his ummah.
