Saeed bin Musayyib narrates: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was reciting poetry in the mosque. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) looked at him angrily and said: Are you reciting poetry in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? In response, Sayyiduna Hassan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I used to recite poetry in the presence of someone better than you. Then he turned to Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: (Hassan!) Respond on my behalf. O Allah! Support him with the Holy Spirit. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Yes. (Upon hearing this) Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went back and understood that Hassan was referring to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
