بَابُ جَامِعِ فِيمَا تُصَانُ عِنْدَ الْمَسَاجِدِ
Comprehensive Chapter on What Should Be Preserved in Mosques
Hadith 1358
عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ: نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الشِّرَاءِ وَالْبَيْعِ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، وَأَنْ تُنْشَدَ فِيهِ الْأَشْعَارُ، وَأَنْ تُنْشَدَ فِيهِ الضَّالَّةُ وَعَنِ الْحِلْقِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ قَبْلَ الصَّلَاةِ
Amr bin Shu'aib narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As, may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade buying and selling in the mosque, reciting poetry, announcing lost items, and forming circles to sit before the Friday prayer.
Hadith 1359
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْبَيْعِ وَالِاشْتِرَاءِ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade buying and selling in the mosque.
Hadith 1360
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ((مَنْ سَمِعَ رَجُلًا يَنْشُدُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ضَالَّةً فَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ: لَا أَدَّاهَا اللَّهُ إِلَيْكَ، فَإِنَّ الْمَسَاجِدَ لَمْ تُبْنَ لِهَٰذَا))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever hears a man announcing a lost item in the mosque, let him say to him: May Allah not return it to you, for the mosques were not built for this purpose.
Hadith 1361
عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ بُرَيْدَةَ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ أَنَّ أَعْرَابِيًّا قَالَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ: مَنْ دَعَا لِلْجَمَلِ الْأَحْمَرِ بَعْدَ الْفَجْرِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَا وَجَدْتَّهُ لَا وَجَدْتَّهُ، إِنَّمَا بُنِيَتْ هَٰذِهِ الْبُيُوتُ قَالَ مُوَمِّلٌ هَٰذِهِ الْمَسَاجِدُ لِمَا بُنِيَتْ لَهُ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraidah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin announced in the mosque after Fajr: "Who has called the red camel?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You shall not find it, you shall not find it. These mosques are only for the purposes for which they have been built."
Hadith 1362
عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَا تُقَامُ الْحُدُودُ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ وَلَا يُسْتَقَادُ فِيهَا)) (زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ غَيْرِ مَرْفُوعَةٍ: وَلَا يُنْشَدُ فِيهَا الْأَشْعَارُ)
Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Neither should the legal punishments (hudood) be carried out in the mosques, nor should retribution (qisas) be taken. And in a non-marfu’ narration, there are these additional words: Nor should poetry be recited in them.
Hadith 1363
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ: أَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ: أَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أُمِّهِ عَنْ أُمِّ عُثْمَانَ بِنْتِ سُفْيَانَ وَهِيَ أُمُّ بَنِي شَيْبَةَ الْأَكَابِرِ قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ: وَقَدْ بَايَعَتِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَعَا شَيْبَةَ فَفَتَحَ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ الْبَيْتَ وَرَجَعَ وَفَرَغَ، وَرَجَعَ شَيْبَةُ، إِذَا رَسُولُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أَنْ أَجِبْ، فَأَتَاهُ فَقَالَ: ((إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ فِي الْبَيْتِ قَرْنًا فَغَيِّبْهُ)) قَالَ مَنْصُورٌ: فَحَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُسَافِعٍ عَنْ أُمِّي عَنْ أُمِّ عُثْمَانَ بِنْتِ سُفْيَانَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ قَالَ لَهُ فِي الْحَدِيثِ: ((فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي الْبَيْتِ شَيْءٌ يُلْهِي الْمُصَلِّينَ))
The mother of Akabar bin Ushaybah, Umm Uthman bint Sufyan, pledged allegiance to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). She narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for Shaybah, he opened the door, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the House of Allah and then came back out. In this way, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished, and Shaybah went back. But soon the messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived again and said, "Listen to the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." So he reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I saw a horn in the House of Allah, hide it." Another narrator of this hadith says that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said to him that it is inappropriate for anything that distracts the worshippers to be in the House of Allah.
Hadith 1364
(وَمِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا سُفْيَانُ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مَنْصُورٌ عَنْ خَالِهِ مُسَافِعٍ عَنْ صَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ شَيْبَةَ أُمِّ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَتْ: أَخْبَرَتْنِي امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ وَلَدَتْ عَامَّةَ أَهْلِ دَارِنَا، أَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ، وَقَالَ مَرَّةً: إِنَّهَا سَأَلَتْ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ طَلْحَةَ لِمَ دَعَاكَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَ: قَالَ لِي: ((إِنِّي كُنْتُ رَأَيْتُ قَرْنَي الْكَبْشِ حِينَ دَخَلْتُ الْبَيْتَ فَنَسِيتُ أَنْ آمُرَكَ أَنْ تُخَمِّرَهُمَا فَخَمِّرْهُمَا، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي الْبَيْتِ شَيْءٌ يُشْغِلُ الْمُصَلَّى)) قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: لَمْ تَزَلْ قَرْنَا الْكَبْشِ فِي الْبَيْتِ حَتَّى احْتَرَقَ الْبَيْتُ فَاحْتَرَقَا
It is narrated through another chain: Safiyyah bint Shaybah says: A woman from Banu Sulaym, who is the mother of most of our household, told me that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent a message to Uthman bin Talhah. On one occasion, the narrator said that this woman asked Uthman bin Talhah: Why did the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, call you? Uthman bin Talhah, may Allah be pleased with him, replied: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me: When I entered the House of Allah (the Ka'bah), I saw two ram's horns, then I forgot to order you to cover them, so now cover them, because it is not appropriate for anything to be in the House of Allah that distracts the worshipper. Sufyan says: The two ram's horns remained in the House of Allah, and when the House of Allah caught fire, they were also burned.
Hadith 1365
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى تَتَبَاهَى النَّاسُ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ))
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The Day of Judgment will not be established until people begin to boast to one another about (the construction of) mosques.
Hadith 1366
عَنِ الْخَضْرَمِيِّ بْنِ لَاحِقٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((إِذَا وَجَدَ أَحَدُكُمُ الْقَمْلَةَ فِي ثَوْبِهِ فَلْيَصُرَّهَا وَلَا يُلْقِهَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ))
Hazrami bin Lahiq narrates from an Ansari man that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any of you feels a louse in his garment, he should press it and not throw it in the mosque.
Hadith 1367
عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي بْنَ كُرْزٍ عَنْ شَيْخٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ قَالَ: وَجَدَ رَجُلٌ فِي ثَوْبِهِ قَمْلَةً فَأَخَذَهَا لِيَطْرَحَهَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَا تَفْعَلْ، اِرْدُدْهَا فِي ثَوْبِكَ حَتَّى تَخْرُجَ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ))
Talha bin Ubaidullah bin Karz narrates from a Quraishi Sheikh of Makkah Mukarramah, who says that a man felt a louse in his garment and was about to throw it in the mosque, but the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: Do not do that; keep it in your garment until you leave the mosque.
Hadith 1368
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَالِسًا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَأَصْحَابُهُ إِذْ جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ فَبَالَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، فَقَالَ أَصْحَابُهُ: مَهْ مَهْ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((لَا تُزْرِمُوهُ دَعُوهُ)) ثُمَّ دَعَاهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ: ((إِنَّ هَٰذِهِ الْمَسَاجِدَ لَا تَصْلُحُ لِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الْقَذَرِ وَالْبَوْلِ وَالْخَلَاءِ أَوْ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ، إِنَّمَا هِيَ لِقِرَاءَةِ الْقُرْآنِ وَذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَالصَّلَاةِ)) فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ: ((قُمْ فَأْتِنَا بِدَلْوِ مِنْ مَاءٍ فَشُنَّهُ عَلَيْهِ)) فَأَتَاهُ بِدَلْوِ مِنْ مَاءٍ فَشَنَّهُ عَلَيْهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in the mosque with his companions when a Bedouin came and began to urinate in the mosque. The companions said, "Stop! Stop!" But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do not interrupt his urination, let him be." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called him and said, "These mosques are not appropriate for filth, urine, or excrement; they are only for prayer, the remembrance of Allah, and the recitation of the Qur'an." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told a man, "Get up and bring a bucket of water and pour it over it." So he brought a bucket of water and poured it over it.
