بَابُ صِيَانَةِ الْمَسَاجِدِ مِنَ الرَّوَائِحِ الْكَرِيهَةِ
Chapter on Protecting Mosques from Foul Odors
Hadith 1352
عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ فِي خُطْبَةٍ لَهُ: ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ تَأْكُلُونَ مِنْ شَجَرَتَيْنِ لَا أُرَاهُمَا إِلَّا خَبِيثَتَيْنِ، هَٰذَا الثُّومُ وَالْبَصَلُ، وَأَيْمُ اللَّهِ! لَقَدْ كُنْتُ أَرَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَجِدُ رِيحَهَا مِنَ الرَّجُلِ فَيَأْمُرُ بِهِ فَيُؤْخَذُ بِيَدِهِ فَيُخْرَجُ بِهِ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ حَتَّى يُؤْتَى بِهِ الْبَقِيعَ، فَمَنْ أَكَلَهَا فَلَا بُدَّ، فَلْيُمِتْهَا طَبْخًا
Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said in one of his sermons: O people! You eat two plants, garlic and onion; I consider them to be foul (disliked). By Allah! I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whenever he sensed their smell from someone, he would order such that the person’s hand would be taken and he would be led out of the mosque, until he was brought to the Baqi’ place. If anyone must eat them, then he should cook them to eliminate their odor.
Hadith 1353
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْ هَٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ فَلَا يَأْتِيَنَّ الْمَسَاجِدَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever eats this plant (onion or garlic), let him not come to the houses of Allah (i.e., the mosques).
Hadith 1354
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْ هَٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ يَعْنِي الثُّومَ فَلَا يُؤْذِيَنَّا فِي مَسْجِدِنَا)) وَقَالَ فِي مَوْضِعٍ آخَرَ: ((فَلَا يَقْرَبَنَّ مَسْجِدَنَا وَلَا يُؤْذِيَنَّا بِرِيحِ الثُّومِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever eats from this tree, that is, garlic, should by no means come to our mosque and cause us harm. In another place, he said: Such a person should neither come near our mosque nor harm us with the smell of garlic.
Hadith 1355
عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَمْ نَعُدْ أَنْ فُتِحَتْ خَيْبَرُ وَقَعْنَا فِي تِلْكَ الْبَقَلَةِ فَأَكَلْنَا مِنْهَا أَكْلًا شَدِيدًا وَنَاسٌ جِيَاعٌ، ثُمَّ رُحْنَا إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَوَجَدَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الرِّيحَ، فَقَالَ: ((مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْ هَٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ الْخَبِيثَةِ شَيْئًا فَلَا يَقْرَبَنَّا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ)) فَقَالَ النَّاسُ: حُرِّمَتْ حُرِّمَتْ! فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: ((أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لِي تَحْرِيمُ مَا أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ وَلَكِنْهَا شَجَرَةٌ أَكْرَهُ رِيحَهَا))
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We had not gone beyond the conquest of Khaybar when we entered a field of greens, and the people were hungry, so we ate a lot of it. Then we went to the mosque, and when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) perceived the smell, he said: Whoever has eaten from this foul (unpleasant) tree should not come near us in the mosque. The people began to say: It has become forbidden, it has become forbidden. When this news reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: O people! I have no authority to make unlawful what Allah has made lawful. In reality, it is a tree whose smell I dislike.
Hadith 1356
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((مَنْ أَكَلَ ثُومًا أَوْ بَصَلًا فَلْيَعْتَزِلْنَا، أَوْ قَالَ: فَلْيَعْتَزِلْ مَسْجِدَنَا وَلْيَقْعُدْ فِي بَيْتِهِ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever eats garlic or onion should keep away from us or from our mosque and stay in his house.
Hadith 1357
عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: أَكَلْتُ ثُومًا ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُ مُصَلَّى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَوَجَدْتُهُ قَدْ سَبَقَنِي بِرَكْعَةٍ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى قُمْتُ أَقْضِي فَوَجَدَ رِيحَ الثُّومِ، فَقَالَ: ((مَنْ أَكَلَ هَٰذِهِ الْبَقْلَةَ فَلَا يَقْرَبَنَّ مَسْجِدَنَا حَتَّى يَذْهَبَ رِيحُهَا)) قَالَ: فَلَمَّا قَضَيْتُ الصَّلَاةَ أَتَيْتُهُ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّ لِي عُذْرًا، نَاوَلْنِي يَدَكَ، قَالَ: فَوَجَدْتُهُ وَاللَّهِ سَهْلًا، فَنَاوَلَنِي يَدَهُ فَأَدْخَلَهَا فِي كُمِّي إِلَى صَدْرِي فَوَجَدَهُ مَعْصُوبًا فَقَالَ: ((إِنَّ لَكَ عُذْرًا))
Sayyiduna Mughira bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I ate garlic and came to the mosque of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had already performed one rak’ah, so when he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, I stood up to complete one rak’ah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sensed the smell of garlic and said: Whoever eats this vegetable should by no means come near our mosque until its smell is gone. Mughira bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: After completing the prayer, I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I have an excuse, please give me your hand. He says: By Allah, I found him gentle. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me his hand, then inserted it through my sleeve until it reached my chest and, feeling the bandage tied on my chest, said: Indeed, you have an excuse.
